  3. A city charging it's fire department for using the municipal water system to put out a fire. What's the world coming to? I can just imagine the supply engine searching for a hydrant, to find that when they get to one, they can't use it on account of none of the crew on board having spare change for the meter. What if someone parked right at the meter in front of the hydrant. It's illegal, but what would the traffic cop say to a comment like, "Well there's a parking meter here."
  4. That's what I call a brush truck.
  5. Nice rig. Previously, I think they only had a few Decon. trailers spread out throughout the city. I want to say about five or six, but I'm not sure. I do know that the airport did have one stationed there though.

  13. Looks like somebody's trying to pick up the Tokyo Fire Department on their in-car scanner.

  15. I've got to tell you, R1SmokeEater, you've got some fantastic YouTube videos! Keep up the great work!
  16. Two-tone would be pretty cool. Much like Stratford, CT's Command Car. I remember when they had the Excursion a few years back, someone at 1 Company was saying how the reds didn't match, and they were looking into getting a new(now former) Command Car for the Deputy that matched the color of the rigs. It is pretty close now though. By the way, what will become of the Ford Excursion reserve Unit 4? All in all, it's an awesome car. Looking forward to seeing it pull of of HQ Code 3 in the near future. With all the lights it's sure to draw some attention. Congrats SFRD.

  21. John, It's great that you want to be a firefighter. It's a job like no other. But, I would say, definitely stay in school. It may seem like a pain, and I know some guys will regret it and say how it didn't really help them, etc. But, the more education you can get, the better you will be as a firefighter and as a person. Getting a good college education should be a number one priority. Four years in college will make you, as has been said, more well-rounded to deal with the day-in, day-out life as a firefighter. Also, I agree with perhaps learning another trade. A fire science degree may or may not help you in both getting hired and or in your career. Learning a trade/getting a degree however, can help you make a little more money, especially on the days off. Also, it make take a while to get hired by a paid department, so having another job during that waiting period helps pay the bills. Additionally, it's getting harder and harder to get a job on a career department, as there's a lot of competition, especially in today's economy. The FDNY was just hiring and had over 60,000 applicants, so to get hired there, for example, you really have to be the best of the best. However, keep in mind, that having a college education, being a volunteer, on top of any other degrees and certifications you may have(such as EMS training), will help make you stand out above other applicants who may not have what you have. Going to college, getting out on your own, and getting a job is an exciting time in your life, especially for a prospective firefighter. It may seem frustrating for now, but don't worry, you'll get there. And once you do, like has also been said before, you can be on the job for over twenty years. For the time being, however, go to school, get your feet wet in a volunteer setting, get as knowledgeable as you can about firefighting in order to really get a feel of what the job's about, and ask yourself if this is really something you want to do for a good portion of your life. But most of all, enjoy being a teenager and a young adult and have fun. Time flies by, and you'll get there soon enough. Good luck, and stay safe!
  22. Both the Super Pumper and Super Tender were originally housed at Engine 211 at 26 Hooper St. in Brooklyn from their creation in 1965 until 1972, when it moved to Engine 207 at 172 Tillary St. in Brooklyn. It remained there until being disbanded in 1975. They were originally their own company and staffed like any other, but eventually became a cross-staffed company due to budget buts.
