  8. Yonkers is usually very high. My guess for them is somewhere in the high 30,000 range. According to stats in past years, maybe 38-39,000. Assumingly, from last years stats, I'd place New Rochelle from the high 7,000's to 8,000 range, and Mt. Vernon in the high 8,000's, perhaps closer to 9,000. I believe all three departments run first responder medical.

  14. helicopper's correct. Volunteering is a great start, but there's a lot of hard work and effort that comes after that if you are interested in pursuing a paid career.
  15. The EFD runs out of 5 Fire Stations throughout Eastchester, Bronxville, and Tuckahoe. I think they run around 4-5,000 emergency calls annually. They run with 4 Engines, a Ladder, a Tower Ladder, and a Duty Chief. They also have a Spare Engine and a Spare Ladder, as well as a County Squad Support Unit. I may be a little off though. If I am, maybe someone from the EFD can correct me. Hope this helps. 18. I would look into joining a local volunteer fire department, and get as much experience as possible to get a feel of what the job's all about. I'm not sure how many combination paid/volunteer FD's there are in that area, but I would stick to all-volunteer for now. In the meantime, look around for paid departments that are hiring. Then, put as many applications in to as many paid fire department that are hiring as you can. It can take a long time to get hired, and chances are, you may not get hired by the fire department you want to get hired by. Don't overlook a paid department just because it's not your top choice. Check around, and see who's hiring but first, as I said before, I would get into volunteer firefighting if at all possible, especially if you've not had a lot of experience with firefighting before, while your waiting, and maybe a small job on the side to help pay the bills. If you really want the job and have a love for it, while it may take a long time to get hired, you'll get on. Good luck.

  25. Oops. I was thinking of roll up firehouse garage bay doors painted or unpainted this whole time . It's been a long day. As for apparatus roll up doors, it depends on the mfg. and the department, but in my opinion, unpainted doors are easier to manage, by far, but painted ones can look better, again depending on the rig itself and the department's color scheme.
