  4. The horns seem pretty cool. Although they must have been loud, it's sort of a shame so many FD's removed them. Up in CT, Darien FD still uses theirs. It can be heard around for miles, especially at the restaurant across the street(LOL!). I think Sound Beach FD in Greenwich, CT might also still use theirs. Other than that, I can't think of too many that are still around or have been used in the last 30, 40 years.
  5. It's really a shame, considering that the LAFD is one of the largest and greatest fire departments in the country, that responds to well over 440,000 emergency calls annually. The article stated that department morale is now at an all-time low. For a little background, as of today, there are 106 Fire Stations in the city, spread out in 2 Divisions(North and South), each commanding 7 Battalions. There are currently 130 Engines, 40 Trucks, 136 ALS and BLS Ambulances, 4 Squads(Haz-Mat./Special Units), 1 Heavy Rescue, 2 USAR Units, 7 Helicopters, and 5 Fireboats, as well as numerous other special support and reserve units. The LAFD utilizes the Task Force and Light Force concepts. A Task Force often responds together and consists of an Engine Company staffed by four firefighters, and a Light Force Company, which is made of up a Pump(200 Series) Engine Company and a Truck Company. The Pump Engine is staffed with one firefighter and the Truck Company is staffed with five. The Pump and Truck always respond to all calls together. When a Light Force responds by itself, the fifth man on the Truck jumps on the Pump, bumping up staffing on the Pump to two. The Engine and the Light Force(the Task Force) as considered two separate resources by the LAFD. Task Forces are housed together in the same stations. The whole concept was introduced in the '60's as a result of the Watts Riots. The idea was that more units and firefighters could respond at the same time to incidents, thus safety in numbers, and a quicker rate of suppression. As of last July, due to budget cuts, the city closed 2 Battalions(there were originally 16 Battalions, now there is 14) and 1 Division(originally 3 Divisions, now down to 2), spreading out their Fire Stations into the remaining Battalions and the Battalions into the remaining Divisions. Additionally, 11 Engines, 8 "200 Series" Pump Engines, and 7 Trucks(thus, 7 Light Forces) were all closed. Two ambulances were added. I also believe manning was cut, but I'm not sure. Although no Fire Stations were closed per se, that's a lot of resources eliminated. Hopefully, the LAFD can pull out of and overcome these tough times.

  8. Awesome! The map may be a few years old, however, as it shows Manhattan Engine 36 still in service and Engine 15 at it's Henry St. quarters prior to it's move into Ladder 18 and Battalion 4's quarters. I've never seen a map of the Boxes. Quick question, does anyone know if the first numbers of the boxes match up with the Battalions that the boxes are in? I could be wrong, but they seem to be on the map.
  9. Good eye. I see it now. Didn't catch it before.
  10. All nice rigs! I hope the FDNY can say the same about them, and I hope the companies they are going to will be pleased with them. By the way, the supply truck lettered CPC L-10 is the Chemical Protective Clothing Unit for Ladder 10. Ladder 10 is a Chemical Protective Clothing Ladder Company, meaning that it responds to Haz-Mat./Decon. Incidents with the supply truck, which carries Level "A" and Level "B" chemical haz-mat. suits and decon. equipment. There are 23 CPC Ladder Companies in the city, as well as 4 Rescue Companies with capabilities, minus the supply truck and extra equipment. The link posted by INIT915 pretty much explains the rest. And, NurseMedic, the URL on the rigs does work. I do recall that it didn't for a while. I believe the correct link at that time was www.nyc.gov/fire, but I'm not sure.
  11. Nice job. Three-deckers/balloon-frame multiple dwellings are the typical bread-and-butter fire all throughout New England, particularly CT, MA, and RI. Most jobs many urban fire departments respond to are in these types of buildings. Cities like Stamford, CT, Bridgeport, CT, New Haven, CT, Waterbury, CT, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT, Springfield, MA, Worcester, MA, and Boston, MA and loaded with three-deckers/balloon-frame dwellings. In They're like tenements, brownstones, and brick M/D's are to New York. Fires spread through them quickly, usually via the spaces between the walls. Also, many have either open and enclosed porches either on the front of back of the structure or both that generally burn fast and can collapse quickly. So, if anyone out there tends to run across these buildings for jobs, stay safe!

  13. Mack CF: one heck of a rig, built to last. They were both reliable and durable. And, not to knock any Pierce fans out there, but it is also the only CF! And Cogs, I've seen Noroton Heights fleet and they're all in mint condition, and all frontline too: 2 Engines, 1 Quint, and 1 Tanker. Their Rescue is a Mack MR I believe. They also used to have a sort of "mini-snorkel", like Chicago's Snorkel Squads, but the snorkel boom was removed some time ago and now it's their tanker I believe. Also, Darien had 2 Mack Engines and still have a Mack tanker(not CF though). Their Mack CF tower was refurbed by Seagrave and is one of two(including Pelham Manor) Seagrave single-axle rear re-mounts. Still, there's nothing like a Mack!
