  1. Quick question, will the new HQ house any other Special Units other than Engine 2, Truck 2, and Car 2(Deputy Chief)? Also, is Tac. Rescue 2 now paired with Rescue 1 at Broad River, or is it still with Station 2?
  2. It will be the new, improved "House of Pain".
  3. Here's a PDF of the project. A rendering of the building from the Connecticut Ave.(Post Rd.) side. The NFD can really use the building, but yeah, it really does look like a building from Yale. http://www.norwalkct.org/DocumentView.aspx?DID=2208

  5. I'm also surprised though that they bough 2 Engines and a Ladder all in one year, considering their financial problems and layoffs. But, they sure can use the rigs. Right now, they are using old Hahns as spare Engines and they have no spare Ladders. One 2004 Seagrave engine, the old Engine 1, is sitting on blocks at Fire HQ, now used for parts for the other engines in the fleet. When a Ladder Company goes OOS now, they have to take a frontline Ladder OOS and use it as a spare. Yup. I think there's something like 29 laid off now. They went from 6 Engines, 3 Ladders, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue, 2 Battalions, and 1 Deputy Chief all fully-staffed down to 4 Engines, 3 Ladders, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue(cross-staffed), 1 Battalion(2 if manpower permits), and 1 Deputy Chief. Whenever the Rescue is needed, the Ladder Company guys will mann it. Also, recently, the city is browning out one of the 3 Ladder Companies per day, usually Ladder 1(new Pierce rear-mount stick) I believe. Thus, they are now down to 4 Engines, 2 Ladders, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue(cross-staffed), etc., etc. Things are not looking good, and haven't been for a while. Let's hope things get better for them.

  8. They're building a new Fire Headquarters on the site of the old one scheduled for 2013 opening. Companies stationed at the old Volk(Engine 2, Truck 2, Car 2(DC)) are now running from across I-95 at the fire apparatus maintenance facility. In fact, the groundgreaking for the new Headquarters was just a couple of days ago. The new building will be huge and should be a big improvement from the old Station 2, which was built in 1963. The NFD really deserves it.

  18. Oh, forgot to mention, the multitude of steep and sharp hilly streets in Waterbury almost mirror those found in San Francisco. Which reminds me, stay clear of Waterbury during a snow or ice storm!(LOL!)
  19. Nice shots! That's pretty much the half of it as Ladder44 said. Waterbury is one of New England's many old factory/mill cities that boomed during WWII and through the 1950's, but slowly declined and went downhill afterwards when the industry moved out. It is currently the 5th largest city in Connecticut and is very similar to the city of Bridgeport, CT if anyone is familiar with it. Waterbury has an immense amount of vacant factories, industries, and many 3-deckers(multi-family houses). The Waterbury Fire Department is generally a very bust urban FD. They usually run around 18,000 emergency calls annually(with Medical I believe). They currently operate out of 8 Fire Stations, and operate a Fire Apparatus fleet of 8 Engines, 3 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 1 Haz-Mat. Unit, 1 Collapse Unit, 1 Battalion, and 1 Deputy Chief. The Rescue(Rescue 9) is cross-staffed by members of Engine 1, thus, when the Rescue goes on runs, they respond as Rescue Engine 1. Waterbury doesn't usually get jobs this big, and usually if they do, they handle them on their own. It's rare when M/A is called to the scene.
