  1. Thank you for the complement then Willy D. Providence certainly does catch a lot of work, and they especially did back in the "War Years". I still say you should write a book.
  2. To follow up on Mr. Dennis' story(a great story by the way), the Providence Fire Department is currently one of the largest and oldest FD's in New England, and the largest in Rhode Island. It is, like nfd2004 said, a great and might I add a very busy fire department. The Providence Fire Department currently operates out of 14 Fire Stations in 2 Battalions. They also operate 14 Engines, 8 Ladders, 1 Special Hazards(Heavy Rescue), 1 Collapse/Trench Rescue Unit, 1 Fireboat, 2 Mini-Pumpers, an Air Supply Unit, several Canteen/Rehab. Units, and many support units, as well as 6 ALS Rescue Units(Ambulances), all manned by over 500 career FF's. The PFD responds to approximately 40-45,000 emergency calls annually, including a lot of EMS. Wikipedia Article on the PFD Firenews.org Page w/Pics
  3. I believe a 10-26, as PCFD ENG58 mentioned, is either a W/F or an All-Hands.

  6. It's amazing that politicians still don't get the importance of fire department staffing. Not to divert off topic too much, but in Greenwich, CT for example, they operate a combination paid/volunteer fire department out of 8 Fire Stations. 1 of those 8 is Banksville FD in New York(they cover the northern reaches of Greenwich), and another one of those 8 is all volunteer(Round Hill FD). The remaining 6 are combination paid/volunteer. The paid FD operates 6 Engines and 1 Truck, and cross-staff a Rescue when needed with about 100 paid FF's. However, 4 of those 6 Engines are staffed around the clock by 2 personnel. The Truck is staffed with 3 personnel. Anyhow, the paid FD covers the entire town(almost 50 square miles with 60,000 people!) and respond to around 4,000 calls a year(no EMS). The volunteers mann 6 Engines, 2 Ladders, and numerous special units and also cover the town in their respected districts. I'm not sure though if the volunteers jump on the paid rigs on calls, or if they ride out on their own rigs. Quick question though regarding FDMV: are all 5 Engines in service normally? Also, do the Rescue and Ladder 3 both run out of Engine 5's quarters?
  7. Nice shot! How many HM rigs are stored at Haz-Mat. 1's quarters w/Squad 288? I'd assume just the main rig?
  8. So, the 3rd Truck Co. in the Vern is normally OOS? Which one? FDMV Ladder 2?
  9. Great work to the brothers and sisters of the FDMV. It ain't easy going to jobs in this heat. One question, why the limited manpower? Also, is Mt. Vernon's Rescue staffed, or is it cross-staffed like New Ro's.

  14. Yeah, Marty's girl was going to take a teaching job in Port Chester, and Marty assures her that she will make friends there, and that he will visit her. Amazing how things have changed since then. Just looking at the places in the Bronx where they shot the movie on location, it's hard to believe it was ever like it was in the movie. The opening shot was filmed on Arthur Ave. in the Bronx's Little Italy. If anyone is familiar with it, it was shot right near Mario's Restaurant, which was there at the time. Except for the trees and the direction of the traffic, not much has changed in 57 years. Anyhow, Marty is a great classic movie.
  15. I think both are combination with low numbers of volunteers.
  16. Ernest Borgnine was truly a one of a kind actor and one of the last of the "greats" of Hollywood's Golden era. I remember him for his more prominent roles, when he played the tough guy, like as the man who tried to run Spencer Tracy off the road in Bad Day at Black Rock, as the tough U.S. Army Sgt. "Fatso" Judson who beat Frank Sinatra's character to death in From Here to Eternity, and as U.S. Army General Worden in The Dirty Dozen and it's sequels. Ernie will also be remembered for his television shows, such as McHale's Navy with Tim Conway, and in Airwolf, as well as many movies and other TV shows. Only winning one Oscar in his long career as an actor, I personally will most remember him for his role in which he won it: as the lovable Bronx butcher in 1955's Marty. In the opinion of Burt Lancaster that I whole-heartedly agree with, Marty is perhaps the simplest, most beautiful love story ever in a movie. Rest in peace, Ernie. He lived a very long life as a great actor and a gentleman. He was one of my favorite actors and will truly be missed.
  17. Guess not. Hopefully dispatch won't ask, "Car 54, where are you?".
  18. Neither has Camden! Port Chester got JOBS! According to LoHud, a PCFD Assistant Chief was transported to Greenwich, CT Hospital. Hope he's doing okay.
