"WNYF" is an excellent publication for fire service professionals who realize that you can never stop learning about the fire & rescue service until you retire. I highly recommend subscribing if you have any interest in 'The Job".

Public safety is the number one responsibility of elected municipal officials. When they fail to manage the municipal budget properly and cuts have to be made, the cuts must come from non essential services such as the mayor's staff, the mayor's salary as well as any employees who were hired due to nepotism. Municipalities all over America are waging a war against public safety agencies ... It's a practice that has already resulted in preventable injuries and deaths to civilians and firefighters.

From NY Daily News article speaking in regards to EMS Chief John Peruggia, "The storm wasn't the only reason for his demotion. FDNY sources say he's about to face charges from the city Conflict of Interest Board for an inappropriate trip with a vendor that does business with the city"

10-4 Brother ... Stay safe.

Like I said, use the reach of the stream. There is nothing to be saved in a situation such as the one in the video. Stay back and soak the crap out of this pile of plastic & metal and don't approach it until it's been properly cooled down. I don't post on here unless I'm speaking from experience. My goal is to insure the safety of the Brothers and see them get home in one piece after the tour. Be careful ... there is NO reason to be aggressive when arriving at an incident such as the one depicted in the video.

When operating at a vehicle fire, it is appropriate to use the reach of the stream rather than to get in close due to the many hazards (Fuel, fluids, exploding shocks, bumpers, struts, drive shafts, air bags, hood and trunk struts, various hazardous materials that may be transported in the vehicle to name a few). As far as using the SCBA? He should be using it just in case, even though he appears to be in clear air. Protect your lungs, mine are shot and it's not pleasant. If I am taking a walk and a truck passes by leaving a cloud of diesel exhaust in its wake, I wish I had SCBA ... it requires me getting away from the exhaust and using my inhaler. Stay safe ...

Isn't it amazing how when it comes to firefighting everyone is a friggin' expert! "You're not supposed to put water on that..." What then should they use Mr. 9 - 5 desk jockey, orange juice, milk, urine ??? God bless the Brothers, I'm glad they weren't injured. They really had their hands full with the storm and the lack of resources thanks to Mayor Bloomberg and his immediate staff of CEO losers...

When we would take up from a fire, we would always load the hose back into the hose bed of the pumper. Many times we'd catch another fire before we got back to quarters. I thought that was how most departments operated. I guess I'm out of touch ... It's tough getting old.

Nice photos. Do you know what the status of this former squad 800 Rescue Pumper is? Also is there a different rig that now carries that designation?

Just when you thought the GOP had reached an all time low in their disrespect for our sick and dying 9/11 First Responders Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) kicks it up a notch ... What a P.O.S. ... My link
-
Thank you Jon Stewart, you caught the GOP showing themselves as the hypocritical liars that they are. They can never refer to themselves as being patriotic. Their only concern is to maintain tax breaks for the millionaires and billionaires who support them. My link

Thanks Brother. Check out this story from the NY Daily News: My link. Here's the link to Florida's Republican Senator if you wish to give him your opinion: My link

The rich corporate executive loving Senate Republicans (if they truly were concerned with, "the ability of SMALL BUSINESSES to be able to create jobs...") would have stipulated a high end cut off to determine who requires a tax break by calculating what constitutes a SMALL BUSINESS (in terms of income). Democrats have stated that they agree with that concept as it theoretically would accomplish what the Republicans claim they want while at the same time continuing the tax break for the middle class. Clearly, the FACT is that Senate Republicans are most concerned with insuring that the ultra rich, multi-millionaires and billionaires of our country get tax breaks (in addition to all of the loopholes they already use to avoid paying a fair share). I have voted Republican for 34 years, but as a hardworking, taxpaying member of the middle class I'm fed up with the lack of representation that middle class Republican voters get from the very people who we vote into office. The GOP clearly does not concern themselves with middle class voters or sick and dying first responders.

Great post Capt. & THANK YOU for e-mailing all of the GOP Senators who unanimously refused to support our Nation's First Responders who are in desperate need of assistance ... I received some generic, automatic replies from several GOP Senators. I also e-mailed Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson and received the following reply: Dear Mr. xxxxx: Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. On December 9, I voted for a procedural motion to bring this bill up for debate in the Senate, but it failed on a party-line vote. H.R. 847 would help cover the health care costs of workers and first responders who are experiencing health problems as a result of their work at Ground Zero after the September 11 terror attacks. Many first responders are being diagnosed with long-term conditions as a result of inhaling toxic substances at the site of the attacks. I hope that Congress can find a way to overcome the gridlock and help these heroes get the care they need. These Americans made tremendous sacrifices and saved countless lives during one of the country's darkest hours. Thank you again for contacting me and please do not hesitate to do so in the future. Sincerely, Senator Bill Nelson Isn't it amazing that me, a faithful registered Republican voter for 34 years (until I became an Independent last week in disgust) get a real reply from a Democratic Senator and only a few computer generated "Thanks for commenting" messages from the GOP Senators. I guess once they realized they I'm not a millionaire or billionaire (just a middle class, retired firefighter) that couldn't be bothered wasting their time with me ...

They were trained and equipped to operate inside burning buildings (PPE including SCBA) and operated as per the direction of the F.D.N.Y. I.C.

I agree, there are some very influential men listed as being on the Board of Directors. I wish them well. The Insurance industry (Corporate, mega wealthy swine) did a great dis-service by disbanding 'The Patrol'.

Prior to the Democrats having the 'Super Majority' the Republicans had it for a good portion of President Bush's time in office. The Republicans didn't push a bill through to care for 9/11 responders when they easily could have. BTW, while speaking of President Bush (who I voted for both times and who aligned himself with F.D.N.Y. Firefighters and our union after 9/11) why has he been silent on this issue? Why isn't the man who was leading our country on September 11th, 2001 and who swore that he would NEVER FORGET our sacrifices speaking out to his party? He should denounce the GOP's failure to provide care for all of us who ran toward the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 and stayed their until the job was done! I've been a voting member of the Republican Party for 34 years. I moved to independent last week. The GOP is the party of the mega rich. They demonize ALL unions, are anti middle class, anti pensions, anti benefits ... At the same time, they bend over backwards to appease the people who least need any assistance whatsoever: millionaires and billionaires. I urge anyone on this site who feels strongly about seeing the 9/11 Health & Compensation Bill passed to take a few minutes and compose a brief message to all the Senate Republicans telling them politely how you feel about the GOP's complete lack of support for sick and dying 9/11 First Responders and send it to them. If you choose to do so, simply go to this site: My link and click on each Senator who has an 'R' next to their name. It will bring you to their website where you can click on their 'contact me - e-mail' section. Write your message once then copy and paste it into each Senator's e-mail. Discussing this issue here on this site is great and I'm all for it, but it would be better still for all first responders as well as their families and friends to bombard the GOP with their strong feelings. Thanks for listening ... stay safe.

From the story in the S.I. Advance: Musarella, a retired and decorated NYPD Emergency Services Unit detective, was later fired from RUMC. Link to the story: My link It's certainly unacceptable for an E.M.T. to do what this guy did, but for a retired cop to mess around with a crime scene by taking photos and posting them ... wow ...

Isn't it amazing that I can remember that poster that used to be on all the buses when I was a kid, but I can't remember things like why I walked into the garage or what did my wife ask me to get out of the refrigerator (no matter what she asks for I always end up coming back with a bottle of beer ...)

George ... You are right on the money my Brother. It appears that if you want to see a lot of comments on a topic, you need to stick to topics such as: apparatus colors, warning lights, sirens, parade results and apparatus photos. LOL

The Patrol responded to fires and sprinkler discharges in commercial buildings.

Notice that former N.J. Governor Christie Todd Whitman shows up playing a major role in this scandal. She's the very same person who in her position as the head of the Federal E.P.A. continually informed us that, "The air is safe around Ground Zero" in the days and weeks following the September 11th terrorist attacks. What a lowly P.O.S. she is ...

Drafted pond water (even if it appears to be fairly clean) generally has a lot of sediment in it. As such, it's a good reason to avoid using a fog nozzle for interior attacks due to partial or complete clogging of the fog tip causing inadequate GPM's being applied to the fire. Looks like a good shuttle drill.
