  1. I know you tried to explain this statement in a subsequent post, but you're missing FFEMT150's point competely. He is not saying that the volunteers signed up to volunteer, but now want paychecks. He is saying there aren't enough people in the community that want to volunteer, so it becomes impossible for the EXISTING volunteers to make all the calls... hense the need for career EMTs. Career members aren't expected to make all of the calls in their district, and neither are volunteers. A volunteers system's strength is in numbers. A career FF (and probably EMT) usually makes 25% of the total calls in their district. I know many volunteers that make 40-60% of the total calls in their district in an effort to pick up the slack from the lack of NUMBERS of volunteers.
  2. Looks good! I've never seena light bar(s) like that, pretty cool design.
  3. I would guess an APC for SWAT? I doubt it would be military if it's a Pierce. You sure got a lot of good shots for not being allowed to photograph it, haha. EDIT: The light bars also point towards it being SWAT/ESU and not military.
  4. Agreed, just because they didn't have the manpower to get the job done does not mean that the volunteers were treating the house as a social club. It's good to see that Somers did what needed to be done... and I'm happy to see that they still have the volunteers manning 2nd and 3rd busses instread of shutting them down completely.
  5. What kind of file are they now? .mp3? .wav? Your URL will depend on where you upload them on your website. Then post it as a link and people can DL or stream it
  6. The legality is a good question. I think it's primarily governed by agreements. The other towns could simply say, "No more". And then they aren't obligated any more. Of course you could always say, "can't do it" if any of your crews are out working jobs in their district. The questionable legal issues come if the Mutual Aid town's apparatus are not tied up, and they refuse to honor their agreement and someone gets hurt. The lawyers would probably have a field day with that.
  7. It seems like it works just like a smart phone App scanner, which cost $5.
  8. I think that is overstating the facts a bit. Road is closed and it doesn't keep the road closed any longer. They are waiting for the wrecker.
  9. Fair question. Plus that is the more stable side... if anything it would roll onto its roof. However, it could be good practice for setting the ResQ jacks up in a critical situation. Why not make a drill out of an incident? Great pics BTW!
  10. Great pics! I like seeing other color trucks. Although I don't know how I would feel driving a rear-mount bucket. That's a lot of front and rear overhang!
  11. RIP FF Wheatley.
  12. Congrats on the hard work paying off!!
  13. I wouldn't object to the test being more about firefighting because that would give people with experience and/or the motivation to study, an edge. However, the test still isn't discriminating as is.
  14. Welcome! This is the forum to monitor http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showforum=13
  15. Pretty crazy indeed. I honestly can't think of any race-biased questions besides maybe some history/culture questions. Maybe about how to cook some ethinic foods?! Most people have some minority in their blood... just put that as your race.
  16. Congrats!! That is a great B-day present!
  17. I agree with all above posters. I think a lot can be learned from the pictures and in the discussion that follow. Having to start up a second thread (and being allowed to do so) does not stop the negative comments and only makes the process more cumbersom. I think that any inapporpriate comments should be moderated like in any other section. Thanks for being open to our comments, BTW.
  18. I don't mean to step on your SOGs... they may work very well for your department. But as a driver, I would NOT want 4 spotters. The whole point of a spotter is so that he can see everything behind you from a good vantage point, and all youh ave to do is focus on him... and your front bumper. Having to sweep between 4 spotters is just as dangerous as having no spotter IMHO because you have too much to effectievly focus on.
  19. Maybe PEDSTRUCK thought the IA was about the second MVA in Purchase on 287 that firedude refers to that occured during the same time.
  20. Lots of good posts. Our department policy is no turnout coat while driving because it may restrict steering. Bunker pants may be worn, and I like to wear them because in our situation, the operator may have to go into the building for alarm investigation, go to work at an MVA, etc due to manpower issues, and it makes it quicker to get full PPE on for those situations. As for operating the pump or aerial... I would say it's situational. Pump panel probably not... but there is a higher chance of going to work unexpectedly if working the aerial (assist window rescue).
  21. This is all assuming the cross-training isn't done well... which very well might have been the case here from what has been said. I can't see the video on my browser. Am I correct that this area of Georgia has dedicated Sheriffs who are not cross-trained (but have extinguishers), cross-trained Public Safety officers/FFs, and dedicated firefighters? I think cross-training could theoretically be a good solution for municipalities who can't afford two dedicated serivices. I mean there are few instances where the majority of the police force are required (chase, hostage situation) and few instances where the majority of a fire department are required (structure fire). So it could be an efficient solution. I'm sure this opinion won't be popular, and I'm not saying it's better than having dedicated police and fire departments, but, if done right it COULD be a good solution.
  22. Can't believe this happened so close to home. May you both rest in peace and may the world be thankful for your contributions and sacrifice. I don't know if this has been posted, but Bridgeport Local 834 has established a fund for the fallen brothers at Bridgeport Fire Department Employees Federal Credit Union 3115 Madison Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06606. Attn: Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund. Credit union phone #203-374-8120.
  23. Most everything you need is here http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/community/employment_index.shtml
  24. I posted a video in the videoshare forum about using PPV at the wrong time. VES PPV Link I got some PM replies because it appears you can't reply in that forum. It's a very educational video and I thought we could have a constructive conversation about when to use what type of ventilation. I always thought you use natural vertical and horizontal ventilation (when possible) during fire extinguishment and forced positive or negative after extinguishment. My first question is when and why would you used forced negative vs. positive ventilation? Pros/cons?
