The sad part about this, besides a family being ripped apart by politician Russian roulette, is that its ok to put 3 guys on a garage truck to speed through the route and get done by 11:00 to go home and lets leave two guys on a fire truck and take that chance because garbage is more important than peoples lives. Don't be fooled either DPW workers make a good dollar as well. Where can government justify having more men on DPW trucks than fire trucks? The union president says that its against federal law to operate the way they are, has he called the overseeing agency to act on this. For that matter if it is illegal to operate this way, why is it done and how come nothing is done about it??? I also read in another post that other departments operate like this or with less, how is that possible? Those communities listed or not poor communities either. Just doesn't make sense to me

White Plains was mutual aid? Where was Eastchester, Greenville, Hartsdale, Scarsdale,The Pelhams or Larchmont on this? Another sad case of Egos getting in the way of Life and Property Protection. Here is an idea, Lets call a Ladder Company from 30 Minutes away when there are 2 that are within 5 minutes and 4 that are within 15 minutes. Give me an F***in Break.

Thank you for responding Bneiches So in a nut shell department heads, towns, villages, cities ignore standards and get away with it???? Is that legal. Are these standards laws?? How many fire fighters are then needed in a 1 square mile area or a 2 square mile area? Is that the guidance or is it the size of the houses and how many? Who advises the fire departments on the shorages? Again are these standards enforced by anyone? Does my insurance company rate the department or is there a system that is used?? If liabilty is on the chief, what can happen to him/her if my house burns down due to a lack firefighters that respond in minutes as you stated? So you are saying that if there is a fire call a the department comes from a manned station 12 or 13 need to respond?? If yes, how in the world do fire departments only have 1 or 2 firefighters on the fire truck?? Are there other types of hazardous enviorments that may exist that would require the 6 firefighters you say? My biggest question is then this, if there is a shortage of firefighters and these fire departments are respomding not according to these standards you say, why are the towns cities and villages laying them off??? Who has the voice and say in this.

I have some questions What are proper staffing levels for fire departments? Is there any uniformity to this or is by department, town, village or city? Does the size of the town village or city dictate how many firefighters? Who enforces the staffing levels? If these levels are not met what is the liabilty? Who is the liabilty on? If there is a department with 2 fire trucks, how many firefighters are required by law? What law? As a resident, how do a address it, as a firefighter how is it addressed? Is there different rules for a volunteer fire department and a paid staff fire department or a mixed bag of both paid and volunteer depts? My last and final question, Why are there so many fire departments with so many chiefs, commisioners, chiefs cars etc? Thanks for your help and info in advance

Pelham is lucky if they send 4. For that matter Pelham Manor is lucky too if they send 4. They both run 3 per tour 1 officer and 2 FF's. Both departments have 16 guys total now that Pelham added 1. That leaves room for vacation and murphy days. I think Pelham runs with 2 on the engine and 1 on the ladder and I think Pelham Manor runs 1 on each engine and 1 on the tower ladder. Together they would meet the new criteria for ISO. Its just to bad that both Villages Boards are stubborn and worry about their egos and their "STATUS". The boards should know about the ISO change since its bin out for awhile. It will be interesting to see. Do more with nothing is so true for these brothers. Stay safe.

From what I know there rigs are only staffed with career ff. There vollies do not run anything. i never see them at calls either. They are more of a social club

Sorry about that I was not yelling. I am new here and i did not know how to seperate my typing from the post. You are right and wrong, i think. I know that Larchmont has there own goverment,village of mamaroneck has there own and the town of Moamroneck has its own as well That is three goverments 2 villages and 1 town within the town of mamaroneck. Then you have the greenburghs. Then there is Pelham. You have Village of Pelham goverment village of pelham manor goverment then the town of pelham goverment . again 3 goverments 1 town I think the City of Rye has 1 and the Town of Rye has 1 then Port Chester and rye brook. All in Portchester.

the truth is the fact that emergency services is the cheapest part of the taxes that are paid. they are paid through the local goverments. call your local tax office and see what it is you will be suprised on how cheap it is. i think i pay more per month for lunch than i do in police and fire tax. That is another thing, we worry about having cell phones, cable tv, movie channels that we dont watch, the nice car. The average cell bill is $100.00 a month =$1200 year. Cable/phone/internet $150.0 per month = $1800 per year. That there is $3000 per year for entertainment, nothing else. It is OK for the average person to pay that without a blink of an I but when it comes to public safety people are crying because there taxes are increasing. What is more important LIFE SAFETY or HBO AND TEXTING?? Think twice when you watch that movie or send that text or answer the phone.

THEN THERE IS THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE VILLAGES WITHIN TOWNS THAT ARE WITHIN TOWNS THAT ARE WITHIN EVEN MORE TOWNS. EXAMPLE: RYE BROOK IS A SMALL VILLAGE WITHIN PORT CHESTER, CITY OF RYE IS PART OF PORT CHESTER, LARCHMONT IS A VILLAGE AND MAMARONECK IS A VILLAGE WITHIN THE TOWN OF MAMARONECK. PEOPLE IN RYE BROOK AND LARCHMONT FEEL THEY ARE BETTER THAN THE REST AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO GIVE THE "HIGHER ARCHY' OF A NAME UP. THEN YOU HAVE THE GREENBURGHS. EDGEMONT IS A NOTHING, JUST A NEIGHBORHOOD NAME AND THEY HAVE ALL THE POWER THEY WANT AND NEED TO HAVE. JUST LOOK AT LOCAL ELECTIONS. THEY ARE LIKE 300 VOTES PER AREA BECAUSE NO ONE CARES. NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE. IT IS SIMPLE AS THAT. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS TOTAL REFORM AND RESTRUCTURE OF GOVERMENT STARTING FROM THE STATE. THE STATE IS THE ONE THAT SHOULD BE GETTING THIS GOING. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT GIVE MONEY TO THE LOCAL GOVERMENT AND SCHOOLS SO THEY COULD RUN. THE TAX PROBLEM IS NOT SO MUCH POLICE/FIRE/DPW/GOVERMENT IT IS SCHOOLS. TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THAT SYSTEM MAKES A TON OF MONEY. NOBODY WILL STOP THAT FROM HAPPENING BECAUSE THAT IS THEIR CHILDRENS EDUCATION. THAT IS WHY CITY DWELLERS MOVE TO THE BURBS. NOT FOR POLICE/FIRE/DPW. IT IS FOR THE SCHOOLS.
