Should we really be that impressed? She's a female big deal there's plenty of great female firefighters. By now we should know firefighting has nothing to do with your gender or race or anything like that. She's obviously put in real time learning her trade.
I am thoroughly impressed with the way that apparatus was set up to be run by one person. It's bad enough if there are no hydrants but requiring huge amounts of manpower to run the water supply part of the fire robs the fireground of the firefighters needed to put out the fire. I like the fact that tremendous amounts of energy were not needed to run around the rig and get things. She basically stays in a small area and accomplishes everything.

Well yes, anybody can make mistakes but the Port Authority already has enough heat on them from the FAA for having a Police-Ran Airport Fire Department. This could come off to the FAA as them not being properly trained on their equipment and that there equipment is not up to par with the National standards. I'm not saying that an FD wouldn't make the same mistake, but with already them paying penalties and this, it doesn't look good in their favor. What I was trying to say is that this incident could make the FAA make the Port authority push even faster to start up a new fire department.
No, they are paid Port Authority Police Officers who specialized in ARFF

When we get toned out and there are "no reported symptoms," it is for that reason.. no reported symptoms. When the alarm company calls and nobody answers that is the report we get. There is always the potential that the occupier is unconscious and cannot reach the phone. You just never know, and that chance is why we respond with urgency unless informed otherwise.

So what are any of the expedite critics doing to educate the offenders? Or are you just criticizing them and expecting it to get better magically.

That vehicle isn't a perk. It is an emergency vehicle. It doesn't have a license plate, it has a unit identification tag in place of a license plate. It's granted exception from many v/t laws because it's an Emergency Vehicle. An emergency response vehicle for use in Jericho L.I., not shopping at Woodbury Commons.
Look, lets be honest and fair. Chiefs in volunteer fire departments often put in a lot of time. Some departments, those with modest budgets, will simply offer to put a little flashing red light and siren in a chiefs personal car. In districts with the finances, they offer their chiefs a vehicle specifically dedicated to serve in that capacity. I think this is all well and good. Should the chief be able to use that vehicle for personal business? Of course! He's available to operate in his capacity as chief, he should be in the vehicle that is dedicated to that purpose. However, if that person is out of response range and not on department business, he should use his personal vehicle. If that vehicle is a "perk" for elected officials, than it should be properly tagged as such, not given a unofficial plate as the one in the photo has.
The fire service needs to smarten up......and yes, extravagant practices concentrated in L.I. have brought a huge microscope on the volunteer fire service. After all, this is an area with 30x the number of rescue apparatus as operate in a city of 8.5 million people. Has the behavior changed? Who knows, but that picture might lead inquiring minds to think that it hasn't.

The beauty of unmarked take home cars, only the most astute buffs recognize these vehicles.

We cannot discount the possiblity that it may have been there for some other sanctioned department/district business. Unless someone actually approached the operator of the vehicle and asked questions, there could be a million explanations that we don't know about.

You'd be amazed how quick the cost adds up when dealing with communications related equipment and the installation of same. Especially if it is being designed for interoperability with other agencies whom all have different comm equipment.
I'd like to see this thing in person when it's done - being the comm geek that I am.

I truly think rhino lining is the best coating for everything. You could probably use it on cribbing too. Its grippy and protects the wood. I use that s*** on everything and it has not failed yet.

I agree on utilizing the roof for storage.
Long 4 x 4's.....additional stokes...Little Giant ladder...a few 6 foot hooks (yes, useful in extrication and car fires)...

Step 1: Take all the mounts shelves hardware etc.. out and replace with new stuff.
Step 2: Install slide out tool boards.
Step 3: Rhino Line EVERYTHING (a can of the generic stuff costs less than 10 bucks)
Step 4: Replace all of the halogen lights with LED lights, Preferably M Series light heads. the guys at elightbars.org will have some awesome input for you. Make sure there is no amber to the front too. getting rid of the halogen lights will reduce amp draw.
Step 5: go to the lumber yard, buy 2x4s, 4x4s etc... Cut to length... varnish so they last long... attach webbing
Step 6: Build your compartments and mounts around the equipment you have.
Step 7: Put the stuff you lose the least on the roof.
Step 8: Repaint the white and the Blue. I love your color scheme.

Just wondering how NYC Law applies outside of NYC?
Maybe Bloomberg has undercover investigators that go out of the city to look for things like that

I think a physical agility test for volunteers as well as an equal training standard for both career and volunteer firefighters should be the first step in thinking forward!!!

Geez, were full of good ideas. Why don't we get the department to buy us beer, go to parades, and get drunk in uniform. Hey wait a minute: am I in the wrong thread (or maybe advocating booster reels is just as dumb an idea)

FFBlaser liked a post in a topic by dc2t in Booster Reels Aren't Evil
Don't forget the leather buckets. Also we could use the carbon tet grenades as a addtional tool. But the use of a booster line has been a fond memory, many small career depts used high pressure booster to allow the operator to multi task, put truck on pump, advance line and attempt to put out the fire. Other than brush units there is no need for same.
