(New York - WABC, August 28, 2006) - The death toll is now two in that fire and building collapse in the Bronx Sunday. The FDNY lost a probationary firefighters, and a veteran of the force in the same blaze. The FDNY lieutenant severely injured in blaze died Monday morning. A 25-year-old firefighter died Sunday before rescuers could get him to a hospital. In all, five firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze that broke out Sunday afternoon . They were trapped and hurt when the floor gave out in the store they were working on in the Mount Eden section. The five men were swallowed up, and for two desperate hours their fellow firefighters fought to save them. Sadly, help would not come soon enough for 25-year-old Michael Reilly. The rookie firefighter stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating before reaching the hospital. The firefighter who died Monday, 42-year-old Lieutenant Howard Carpluk Jr., was a 20 year veteran firefighter. He passed away after spending the night in the Advance Cardiac unit at Montefiore Hospital. The three others who were trapped were taken to Jacobi Hospital. They are expected to survive. Carpluk, Jr and Reilly were the last two pulled out of the building. They were the most seriously injured. Both went into cardiac arrest. The mayor and fire commissioner raced to Bronx Lebanon Hospital to console the fallen firefighters' families. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, ® New York: "He (Reilly) was somebody who I shook hands with, handed a plaque to and congratulated him at his probbie graduation only four months ago. Parents never forget but I think they can be proud that their son did what he wanted to do and made a difference, whether it was defending the county in Iraq or saving our lives here on the streets of New York City." Reilly graduated from the Fire Academy just two months ago. He is survived by his parents, a brother and a sister. (Copyright 2006 WABC-TV)

In my departments case, any report of smoke or fire in a building, a F.A.S.T. Team from Valley Cottage is dispatched automatically. Better to get another department rolling right away just in case, then to need one in an emergency situation and not have one in place. To the best of my knowledge, we are the only department in the County that does this. We also have our own F.A.S.T. team with at least 10 certified F.A.S.T. Team members. I believe West Haverstraw also started this. A few weeks ago we were called to a fire in Orangeburg for a F.A.S.T. Team because of the fact that the Chief knew how well we were trained. It's the same thing with the Tappan Zee Bridge. In years past when it was covered by Nyack, when an incident happened on the Rockland side of the bridge, only Nyack was dispatched. When an incident happened on the Westchester side of the bridge, only Tarrytown was dispatched. Why not have both departments roll at the same time just in case one of them can't get to the scene because of a traffic jam. Once we took it over, that's what our Chiefs did. We set up a mutual aid agreeement with Tarrytown that we both respond on all calls. Works out great ! I can't imagine not being able to get to an accident scene on a bridge and then have to call a department from the other direction 5-10 minutes into an incident. Just doesn't make sense.

S.V. might call it 17-Truck, but that wont be it's designation on the radio. West Haverstraw has 23-Engine [Code 3 Model] but you wont hear that broadcasted over the air. I think 44 Control requires a specific designation. Ladders have to be Tower, Quint, 75 or 99. My Department's new Seagrave Engine is set to be delivered just before the end of the year. Nice Christmas Present ! It will replace 2-1500, a 1976 Maxim that was refurbished by Pierce in 1995.

Read that when I came home from work last night. Almost all the towns have been working on these projects for the past year. Piermont FD has a few apartments in a building already. Been waiting for something to materialize here in Clarkstown. Time to send Frank Voce from Congers an e-mail to get on that list !
