  2. Not many details on cause of death, but the heat/humidity appears to have been a factor. My prayers go out to these five men and their families. [url=[url=http://fxn.ws/11cvcKn]
  3. Authorities in northwest Georgia say a barricaded gunman is holding four firefighters hostage. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/04/10/5-firefighters-taken-hostage-in-georgia/ Praying for a safe outcome.
  4. I recently read an article (trying to find the link) that says these hurricanes will be minor in comparison to Sandy. The likelihood that it will merge with another system will potentially produce a "perfect storm." Let's keep our fingers crossed this is not the case!!
  5. Thanks Chief.. what was their role at yesterdays river incident?
  6. I was wondering if anyone knows what HD-1 is. I heard them radio my Chief during a recent incident.
  7. Croton FD: Rescue 18, Engines 119 and 120.
  8. Sorry if this may seem a little off-topic. What are your opinions on use of language? I've heard of individuals who have lodged complaints when the ball busting wasn't directed at them or was non-existent. They have simply been offended by use of cursing or "insensitive" remarks. Maybe there can be a limit on what's said around the firehouse, but is fair to other members to have walk on eggshells every time John/Jane is around?
  9. You are absolutely right! RIM (Blackberry) has been on a steady downward spiral for the past couple years. Besides the decreasing market share, they have had significant service interruptions/problems. I had a iPhone 3G for many years until it fell out of my pocket one night on an EMS call. The phone was unusable and to make matters worse it was the week after Christmas. All that was left in stock were the new iPhone 4 64 gigs. Needless to say, they were way out of my price range!! I was convinced after a while that the new blackberry touch was the way to go. Apparently it was the phone to give Apple and Android a run for their money. I have never been more dissapointed! The blackberry was far inferior to the iphone in every aspect. Even my monthly bill was significantly more expensive. Luckily I came across an Android that I could use until I was able to return to the world of Apple. The one thing I liked and kinda missed was the bbm. Thankfully the iPhone came out with a very similar feature in the last update. I would highly recommend the iPhone to anyone wondering which way to go. Androids are not bad phones themselves, but it seems everyone has serious issues with their phones after a year. It is just unbelievable the apps available to aid us in emergency services. They have everything from an app to write a PCR, to an app assisting in vehicle extraction! Hopefully to all you BB owners, things will soon look brighter!
  10. Don't forget 55 buttercup!! Haha
  11. I couldn't agree more! My observation was based more on the past ways. Now that there is going to be a more than competent EMT on scene, there is no reason why ALS resources should be tied up for "band-aid jobs." I am wondering though, what if you are dispatched ALS to a call in say Croton. On scene is just an EMT alone. What is the protocol for taking another job which may require ALS services more than the current one? Is it solely a judgement call at that point?
  12. The Medic is not going to transfer care unless there is a crew to transfer to. Before the paid EMT, it only a driver was present the ambulance would not respond unless an EMT filled out the crew. So if OVAC was unavailable, sometimes it could take an absurdly long time to find mutual aid. Today if such situation arises, the paid EMT will respond to scene and the medic will fill out the crew if mutual aid is unavailable in a timely fashion.
  13. It's not ideal. However it's better than 20+ minutes of toning out for a mutual aid bus when the patient could have been at the hospital already. Either way the Medic is tied up.
  14. I have lots of opinions on this matter, but I'll keep it brief. When all the media attention and the spotlight came down on Croton EMS, Croton was having serious issues covering calls. However, 6 months prior Croton was one of the top VACs in call coverage. There was a drop in membership and participation. However since then, Croton has obtained numerous new volunteers and quite a few current members becoming EMTS and/or drivers. I can't say without the paid EMT CEMS would be back to covering 98% of its calls, but membership has stepped it up. I personally think a 7am-7pm EMT is sufficient. One thing that I like seeing, is when a full crew can not be filled, the 36 medic will ride the call in BLS with the paid EMT. I just wish that happened more frequently when Croton was 100% volunteer. I hope that croton can continue to boost its volunteer membership. Nothing would be greater than to see its return to a 100% volunteer agency.
  15. Great poInt!! I can't even explain how frustrating it can be to be on an ops channel and have to switch through god knows how many frequencies to get on 46.26. Does anybody know if it's possible to assign individual frequencies to the numeric keypad on an HYT portable?? I am guessing it's a feature that can only be used/unlocked by hooking it up to the computer software.
