Yeah I was looking at what metz has to offer. They have some pretty innovative features, like a 4 ton lift capacity on their aerials, a bucket that folds down on top of the roof of the cab, and the > -20 degree vertical. I don't know why more departments don't look into them. Just take a look here: http://www.metz-apparatus.com/features.html edit: The only thing I can think of is that they aren't NFPA compliant with the required amount of ground ladders.

In Orange County: Middletown in runs Pierce rearmount tower ladder for Truck 3. I believe it is 112 feet. Cronomer Valley runs a 110' Seagrave rearmount straight stick. West Point runs a 110' E-One rearmount straight stick. There are several other straight sticks in the 100-110' range including Port Jervis T-827, Cornwall T-402, Walden T-240 and Washingtonville T-579.

How well do the volunteer companies work with FDNY units? Are they seen as a help or hinderence?

I haven't heard of this feature and I am not clear with how it operates, but it sounds very interesting. Does it work like a pager where you can set it to "alert only" and it will silently monitor until the tones you entered come across, after which it opens up the channel? Or does it always have to be monitoring the frequency actively?

Thats a sick rig. I've never seen a tillered quint before, it sure has potential though. The only thing I don't see is much supply hose and where is the tank located/how big is it? I am also curious as to how it is run and dispatched.

Another thing about placement of firehouses is when there was a rail line running through the middle of a town, most often they would erect a station on either side. That way if a long train was going through, one side of town wouldn't get blocked off. But that is probably common knowledge. My departement in Orange County has 3 companies and up until a few years ago they were all located within a 1/4 mile of the center of town. Now my compny has moved about 1 mile outside of town and the other engine company has moved to a new firehouse as well, but still is somewhat centrally located. The only disadvantage to our new firehouse on the outskirts is that most of our members live in the village and have to travel farther to get to the station for a call. With volunteer houses you have to take into consideration where the majority of your population and members live when you plan the location of a new firehouse. This is less applicable for career departments who have a greater flexibility to their location.

Goshen does have a duty chief vehicle which is rotated through the 3 of the 4 duty chiefs in the department. Goshen DC-3 is also Orange Car 19 and responds in his own vehicle. The current Goshen DC car is the former Car 3, a 1999 Tahoe which was replaced when a new Car 1, a 2005 Tahoe was put in service. The Duty Chief car also acts as a utility and can be used to pull the ATV trailer housed at station 2. The presence of so many command vehicles can be seen as excessive but the DC car comes in handy since during the day the duty chiefs are usually in command as the current Cars 1,2, and 3 work during daylight hours. Those are the limitations of a volunteer department.

In case anyone hasn't seen the new Howells black over red fleet yet. You can visit my website www.ocnyfire.com and click on the Howells page under fire departments. In my opinion it looks real sharp. Good choice by them. I don't have an updated picture of E-113 yet, I'm not sure if it has been repainted yet.

I was just looking at the lafirephotos site. LA sure has a nice looking fleet and boy do they love their tillers. Does LA have many tower ladders, if at all?

This is an example of where commas would come in handy.

I have a scanner that I keep equiped in my car year round. I volunteer in Orange County but the majority of the year I am in the Buffalo area. I still keep the scanner in the car, but don't use it when I am out of Orange County. What are the chances that I would be harrased for having the scanner in the car because even though I am a volunteer firefighter I am far away from my response area? It wouldn't be much a problem to disconnect it, but I keep it in mostly as a convienience so I don't have to bother putting it back in when I do go home and answer calls with my department.

2x3" dia hose does not equal 6" diameter. Flow rate is a function of Area*Velocity and since the area of a circle is pi*radius^2 an increase in diameter creates an exponential increase in area and flow rate. For comparision: A=pi*®^2 R=D/2 two lenths of 3" D=3" R=1.5" 2*(pi*3^2)=9*pi 1 lenth of 5" D=5" R=2.5" pi*2.5^2=12.5*pi Therefore one 5" LDH will always give you more water than two 3" supply lines.

It looks like a lot of your photos are at a very high resolution. That is excellent for printing and viewing individual photos but not so great for pages with a lot of photos. For a webpage containing many at once, use thumbnails. That is, make lower resolution copies of each of your images so when the page loads it doesn't have to load multiple large files all at once. You still should include the higher resolution images but they should be linked from each tumbnail. If you keep smaller image sizes for your pages containing multiple pictures the loading time will be greatly decreased. edit: By the way, besides for the sluggish image loading your site looks great.

Hi everyone. I just found this message board through my random searches of the internet. It is looks great and is very informative. I have a website of my own that I have started. It can be found at www.exit109.com/~mikezac It contains images of Orange County fire apparatus. I don't have a full collection of OC apparatus so if anyone has any higher resolution photos that they would like to contribute it would be fantastic.

http://1strespondernews.com/webpages/news/...fd-f44b669d9016 New 2004 KME Predator Pumper/Tanker. It looks like a sick piece of apparatus! I heard rumors that it cost in the neighborhood of $800k. I hope it brings many years of faithful service to the Mechanicstown crew.

My favorite slogan ever is of FDNY Squad 252. "In squad we trust."

It isnt a bad piece of apparatus but sadly it is not configured as a rescue/pumper. It is just a normal 1500GPM/1000Gal engine. You would think with the rescue body, they would decide to store rescue equipment on it. In my opinion E-931 has a bit of a flawed design with a hose bed that is far to high off the ground and hard suction hoses that are kept sealed up in a compartment in the rear, instead of on the outside of the apparatus for easier access. In the GFD the Cataracts main job is that of an engine, water supply and brush firefighting company with the Minisinks doing truck company operations and the Dikemans (my company) performing engine co ops and trench rescue, building collapse and extrication. Of course with a volunteer department, those duties are shared when manpower isnt in the proper proportions.
