To add to what MStrang1 added, many years ago the SFRD determined that truck companies would be sent on all vehicle fires (except those on I-95) to perform traffic control (very nice roadblock!!), rescue (all trucks have hydraulic rescue tools), and overhaul. We pretty much follow the FDNY protocol for vehicle fires. In addition if the incident is on I-95, two engine companies respond from two opposing directions so the second arriving engine performs the truck company functions. In either case 7 or 8 personnel respond to vehicle fires without entrapment. If there is an exposure problem a full box assignment (3 engines, one truck, heavy rescue, and DC) is assigned. If there is a report of injuries and/or entrapment the Rescue and a medic unit are assigned as well. Be Safe!!! SFRD49

Stamford Fire Rescue runs two quints as truck companies. T-1 is a 1995 Sutphen 1500 gpm/400 gal/100' tower ladder and T-2 is a 1997 Sutphen 1500 gpm / 500 gal / 75' midship aerial. They primarily use the pumps when they are assigned to water tower operations (It's nice to assign them a hydrant and they can lay their own line and pump themselves!). As we assign a truck company to vehicle fires there have been many times they arrived beford the engine and stretched the line. Our T-3 does not have a pump. T-2 is going to be replaced with a rearmount aerial within the next 18 months and it will not have a pump. Be safe out there.

In Stamford, the entire city is protected by one career department (SFRD), four combination departments (TRFD, BFD, GFD, and LRFCo.) and one volunteer department (Springdale). Each of the six fire departments operate in districts established by the city charter in 1949. In my posting I identified what departments have what stations. Within the city limits there are six districts which have a total of 12 stations (plus on fire training center). Be safe out there!! SFRD49

Stamford Fire and Rescue Department has issued FR uniform shorts to all members that can be worn on duty. They are not permitted to be worn during emergency runs (including EMS runs), during training sessions at the fire training sessions, and during building inspections. The only time you must wear the long pants is during inspections and to and from work (We still have to wear uniforms in and out of work). When on a run or at drill members must wear their hitch pants over the shorts. That addresses the biohazards of any EMS run. Since we started wearing shorts (about 5-6 years ago) we have not had one injury related to wearing shorts. From personal experience they make a big difference when operating on a hot day like today (Hotter than Hell!!). Be safe...and try to stay cool!!

I forgot to add that our Station #2 (215 Washington Blvd.) has a pole and it's only a couiple of years old.
-
In Stamford, SFRD Headquarters (Main Street) has five (5) stainless steel poles and they are always used for response. The company quarters are all on the second floor except for the watch desk. There are 14 members on duty per shift so the poles still are the quickest way down. In my 20 years on the job there have be very few, and minor, injuries due to the poles. The poles have safety enclosures up top and thick landing pads on the bottom. Be safe out there!!!

The fireworks were last night off Cummings Beach Park in Stamford harbor. Engine Co. #4 was relocated to Our Lady Star of the Sea parking lot (Shippan Avenue) to cover the Shippan Point area, Engine #8 (Reserve) was activated with 4 members and stationed in Cummings Park along with SEMS units and many SPD units. The department's 41' fireboat was also on patrol in the harbor. I was not working last night but they usually also relocate Engine #6 (HQ) into the Cove section of the city. Be safe out there! Have a great holiday!

The latest on the two new pumpers is that they should be delivered within two weeks. They are HME Silverfox 1500/750/30 pumpers. They are similar to the 2002 model operated by Engine #4 except that they have an on-board foam (AFFF) system, a flowmeter on the rear 2.5" discharge, and a few other minor changes. The new rigs are tentatively slated for Engine #3 (West Side Station) and Engine #6 (Central HQ). The engine apparatus assignment will be as follows: E-1: 2004 HME 1500/500 Pumper (HQ) E-2: 1995 Spartan/General 1500/500/30 Pumper (South End) E-3: 2005 HME 1500/750/30 Pumper (West Side) E-4: 2002 HME 1500/750 Pumper (Shippan) E-5: 2004 HME 1500/500 Pumper (Woodside) E-6: 2005 HME 1500/750/30 Pumper (HQ) E-7: 1986 Mack/RSI 1250/750 Pumper (Springdale) Also scheduled for delivery is a third HME pumper that will be assigned to the Turn of River FD. It will be similar to the two going to city fire rescue but has approximately $30K of optional equipment that was added by the TORFD. Be safe!!!
