Staffing around here is a HUGE issue...Port oranges ladder has 2 men on it...TWO MEN!!!! Engine 11 for VCFS has 3 paid guys on at a time...basically they put it in pump, and as the battaion chief arrives, all 3 go in Its scary. EVAC ambulance however appears not to have a staffing problem...but I could be wrong. They dont have stations either, rather posts located throughout the county...i can count off the top of my head 3 that I know about in Daytona....population of 50,000 btw. So if all 3 ambualnces were on runs, which is highly possible given the drugs / vilonce around here, then a 40 min responce time is highly plausable. As for the county dispatchers...im not sure how it works exactly, even though ive been there, but all of the dispatchers are EMD...the center is set up exactly like 60-control. Both the Fire and EMS dispatchers are in the same room and can easily communicate with each other.

Negative...all of Volusia County is provided by EVAC Ambulance which is a paid service. Every ambulance consists of 1 medic and 1 EMT. No BLS buses. Volusia County Fire Services, provides fire protection to the outskirts of the city and the rest of the county. We are a combo department with 3 paid and 1 volly slot at all times. They also provide Daytona International Airport with 24/7 ARFF...fully paid however . DBFD (daytona beach FD) provides fire protection to the city of daytona, south daytona has there own department, same with port orange which is just to the south, where im currently commuting to school from. Basically every dept down here is paid, and VCFS are trying to kick the vollys out for good. www.evacamb.org http://volusia.org/fireservices/

Whats your district's size. People have told me 1 square mile, just wondering if thats true or not. Also, how many residents live in your responce area?

MAYBE is the key word

You all probaly figured out that EBT709 is a member of Embry-Riddle EMS...got him to join emtbravo.

yea, they whipped me into shape. As for more college students getting involved, we had about 40 people who seemed interested in joining!....after we set everything up of course

im watching it at 1 ....then into the fire at 2.....college life lol

Thanks for all the support guys. Its nice to hear that people are appreciating what we are doing. on a side note, we were talking to a student today who had called 911 a few days ago for a broken leg...It took EVAC ambulance 40 mintues to get there. This information was backed up by the cad times from our schools dispatch center. 40 mintues is unacceptable, PERIOD.

IMO really no need for us to purchase one...With TL's in Somers, Bedford hills and Mount Kisco, one or more are just a radio transmission away.

Down in Volusia County we use the MSA packs with the HUD. Personally, i have yet to go interior with one, but from trying it out around the station, I dont really like it. The LEDs are way to bright, and way too big. The cause a big distraction, and I could only imagine what It must be like in pitch black with that shining back on your face.

no word on when it will be held yet

its not in serivce yet, nor will it be for a while. Striping is currently being compleated, and EXTENSIVE training will take place before it even hits the road going to calls.

Why did Lake Carmel choose to go with an explorers program rather then a Junior Corps? Im just wondering what the deciding factors were.

I agree with you that EMS should be standing by, but wouldnt calling in HAZMAT or the police department be more appropriate then the Fire Department?

wow, sign me up...whats the age requirement? 21?
-
wow sounds like LA is a great department to work for, and from videos and pictures I have seen look like they are as well. What are the chances of someone without residency getting hired?

EMTBravo, I do agree with you that bickering get us no where, although pointing out something someone may not have noticed that could have gotten a fellow firefighter killed or seriouly injured is something that should be freely talked about. As you might have seen on my post before I deleted it, I am not trying to hide behind my monitor. My name is Alex Vergo, and you can see from my location what departments I am in...two actually. I have much respect for you for running this site and maintaining it on a daily basis, it is something that I could never do, and much respect is given from me to you for that. Secondly, I would like people to know that I would never intentionally humiliate, bash, dishonor, or look down upon another department or individual, nor would I want the same done for me or my department. However critical items that are learned in FF 1 are not being followed. These have nothing to do with how each department operates. Items such as packing up for each and every call, wearing full PPE for each and every call are being ignored and that has me frightened. I would hate to wake up tomorrow morning, check EMTBravo.com, and find out that someone from some department close to mine has passed away over the night because his SCBA was caught up on something in a fire because his waist straps were undone. That would break my heart to hear that news. I also dont see how this board differes from anything we learn in the classroom, textbook or video wise, video's in particular. I remember watching a video about a firefighter in Phenox, AZ I believe, who was burned over 70% of his body because he went in a training burn with nothing but his SCBA and nomex pants on and the burn building flashed on him. He freely talked about what happened and how he has changed his ways, and how his department has also changed their ways on PPE and other protocols. My point is, we should not be defencive when it comes to seting standard and makeing people follow them. They are there for a reason, and it kills me when I hear that a brother firefighter was injured or killed on the job because he wasnt geared up properly. Haveing each department being assertive and offencive when it comes to standards and guidelines would make a world of a difference to the lives and safety of everyone involved at the fire scene. Again, I never have the intent of personally bashing / dishonoring a member or fire department or EMS agency, I feel that would be disgusting on my part, and show my department in bad taste. I am sorry if I have offended anyone when I have posted before as well. Alex Vergo
