  2. True, but we're in Westchester, not Putnam
  3. the last week or two it has been happening to me. I thought it was just my internet, but I guess its something else.
  4. I'm a volunteer firefighter, and i'm all for volunteering, but SERIOUSLY?!!?! Disclaimer: The next comment apply to EVERYONE, not just these departments. If your volunteer units are slacking, you are going to have to go paid. Dont wait and see if different recruitment techniques will work, because in that time, tragedy might strike. Get off your high horse of being a volunteer and make sure the citizens you are supposed to be protecting, are protected. What is it going to hurt if you have 2-3 staffed personnel stationed at the firehouse for each piece of equipment and are supplemented by volunteers on every call? By staying traditional, you are putting the public at risk, which is the exact opposite of what we are supposed to be doing. Do a serious reality check and do the right thing.
  5. YHFD is actually going out tonight to have a drill at the T.J. Watson site. I'm in school now, so I am unaware of all the specific details, but it will involve fire with victims trapped. Not sure who is going MA wise, if any at all.
  6. On-duty ambulance driver charged with DUI ‘With this guy, it was obvious,’ police officer says of W.Va. medical official ASHLAND, Ky. - A West Virginia ambulance driver faces an impaired driving charge after running two red lights with a patient in the back, police said. Steven Ray Marcum of Mingo County, W.Va., was transporting a patient Tuesday for Jan Care Ambulance, a regional service, when he ran the lights, said police Capt. Todd Kelley. The lights and sirens of the ambulance weren’t on, tipping police officer Bill Lucas that something was wrong, Kelley said. “With this guy, it was obvious,” Kelley said. Marcum failed a field sobriety test and was blood-tested for drugs before going to jail on a charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, Kelley said. Marcum was transporting a patient from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, on the West Virginia line, to a Huntington, W.Va., nursing home. Nobody was injured, and another ambulance picked up the elderly patient, police said.
  7. we do that with our junior corps as well, definitely dont go all the way to the 50'er though
  8. TX and VT you are required to have a siren in your POV if you are displaying red and white lights, which is required if you are responding
  9. i'm supposed to fly into Westchester tonight...damn
  10. This morning, as usual, I logged into www.firehouse.com and the first thing I noticed was a picture of a car accident victim, close up of his face, dead center in the middle of the page. There is no mention of his name, so I was wondering if posting pictures of victims faces, although morally and ethically wrong, is allowed by law? here is a link to the article: http://cms.firehouse.com/web/online/Photo-...A/45$56761 and to the main website where I noticed the picture: http://firehouse.com/

  12. I'm not sure how many of you guys remember 3 years ago when I asked about help starting a campus based 911 medical response unit, so if you don't, now you do.... All I have to say it's finally happening. As of October 13, the M.E.D (Medical Emergency Disaster) Relief Team at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is going operational. It took years for the vision of three of us, me and 2 of my buddies, to finally get this off the ground. Hundreds of hours of meeting with campus safety personnel, local paid fire department chiefs, the paid ambulance service, county OEM and a whole bunch of lawyers, administrative persons and every other desk jockey you could think of that would want to hamper our presence has paid off. We will be operating as a stand-by crew at events on campus for the first month or two for the local community to get used to our presence and for us to show off our skills and professionalism, then finally move up to a 911 response on campus. We currently have 2 fully equipped BLS bikes that we will be operating, and we'll be purchasing a 4x4 gator soon to carry even more equipment that we've purchased such as backboards and other equipment. We wont be transporting patients, at all, ever, because it puts too much liability on us, as well as the local unions wont allow for it, but thats OK with us...we're at least able to keep our skills up to date, and do something that we all love. Thanks for all the help that all you have given over the last couple of years, and if you stop down for the Daytona 500 sometime, come swing by our campus and check us out.
  13. Checking up on the IA's i noticed that hawthorn was working on Fire and EMS 11, I had no idea that the system was operational yet....mostly because I'm 1000 miles away. How do those who are working with it right now like the system? any pro's con's and what nots?
  14. I agree with never speek ill of the dead, but seriously guys...one was leagally drunk while he was on duty, and the other had illegal substances in his system. I agree that it is a complete tragity, but this is one example that maybe could have been avoided if they were sober while on the JOB
  15. Should work the same as a normal E6-B flight computer, just without the inner dials
  16. The department I volunteer for down in FL would have done the same thing too. Their feelings are that, if they bought and issued you your T-shirt, it's their property on loan to you. When I return home from school, I have to return all of my T-shirts otherwise I receive a bill from them in the mail. Southern and northern department operate completely differently on almost every level. Guys down there tell me all the time that they wish they could operate and function with the same commodore and brotherhood we do. To most of them, they say it's just another job, not an honor and that the administration makes it feel that way.
  17. I had the joy of testing out the earlier model of the buddy light as well. I was really impressed with the visibility it gave me on a highway scene in the middle of the night. I tested out the blue colored one, and found out it was not to be used as a flashlight, but more as a visual acuity system. People rolling up on scene said they could see me from 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile down I-95 at night...but that was without rigs surrounding me. Only down side I found on the earlier model, and i dont know if it has been fixed, is that the lights have to be fully replaced when the battery runs out. Other then that, I have only good things to say about the earlier model, and hope to see everyone testing these lights out to see if they work for your department. Alex Vergo
  18. these questions always get me fired up...who cares if a firefighter is black or hispanic or a woman. The victim is not going to care about your skin color or your gender when you pull then from a burning building. What matters is that the job gets done.
  19. Heard on the radio a while back.. -4 engines -1 mutual aid tanker
  20. From what I've heard, and hope to confirm it here, is that the rig is outfitted with seatbelt sensors and will not roll unless all seat belts are secure. If so, how does this system work, and how well are your firefighters adapting to it?
  21. my buddy sent me this sound clip of a rescue squad trying to get dispatched.... talk about trying to keep it short http://media.putfile.com/dispatch-30
  22. gotta love that first comment
  23. oh yes
