Instead of me typing out some whole big thing and rambling on, plain and simple, do you think that Westchester should re-evaluate its response / fire tax lines to incorporate a closest unit response. I can think of numerous places where there is a firehouse right near a fire district line, yet the department that will take 8 min to get there, because of the distance, gets dispatched. I personally feel it does, and yes, even though some departments districts might get smaller, and some larger, our huge egos need to take a step back and look at whats going on. What would the public think if there was a house fire, and the example above happened causing a catastrophic event to occur. edit: stupid typos

is it possible to get the law rewritten, of course taking years possibly, to say that a county / multi-county department is allowed? I think if the majority of NYS voters realized what was at stake, they might vote to get the law changed.

If it benefits public life and property, why not get it done? Sure no one like going to meetings, arguing, filling out paper work, cutting boundry lines, talking to others about things that stir the pot, but like I said before, we are here to protect the public, and I feel that we can do that even better by closest unit response. Automatic mutual aid is nice, but if the m/a company arrives first and has command of the scene, why not just set it up so that way they have district coverage over the area. To me it seems like taking the shortcut and easy way out with a/m and could cause some legal battles if something goes wrong on scene. Who has proper command, who was responsible ect. ect.

Every department in FL requires that you be an EMT before joining. Most department south of Orlando require before even applying that you have your medic. These department such as miami-dade, orlando, daytona beach fire, are all incredible departments to work for...

I dont see what the problem is. If you are understaffed with volunteers, need man power and new recruits and "old tymers" aren't providing adequate support....its time to go paid, combo, full, part time, who cares. Dont put your town at risk because your ego is at stake. The towns people would be much happier with you if you tell them their safety is at risk, then immediately show them a plan to increase it. To me, it is a no brainer. Sure there are things like driving taxes up if you want paid guys...but why not think about consolidating your resources into a larger department. Each department doesn't need 4 engines, 2 ladders 3 rescues and a brush truck. I'm not saying down here in FL we're better, but things are run differently. For the same size area as some as these departments in westchester and the lower hudson valley, there is 1 engine, staffed with 2-3 paid guys and a volly if he wants to ride, and thats just for the unincorporated areas of volusia county (VCFS) city departments are fully paid, with the same resources. Its time to take a look at how we are allocating our money, not just within our own departments, but the departments around us and cut the costs back significantly.

As a Safety Science major, this is all that I deal with, OSHA regs...and I too have yet to come across a single reg that deals with riding the back step. You are correct too when talking about the General Duty Clause that ensures employers must remove all known hazards from the work environment, even if there is no specific regulation that deals with that hazard.

My awesome politically correct department at work...My resignation letter goes monday after his funeral.

The fire fighter who passed away was Rookie Firefighter John Curry, 30 years old. He was married with 2 children. Although he was a member of my department, I did not know of him personally, since it is a county wide department with many members, but we are all still taking his passing hard. I'll post funeral announcements in the coming days.

From www.wesh.com I know down here in FL, every single firehouse, police station, some krispy kremes (yes, its true) and other pubic places are designated "Safe Places" which allow the parents of a new born, up to 48 hours after birth I believe, to leave the baby with the employees of the work site. I was wondering if NY has the same laws, if so, I sure haven't heard of any
