Your kind of late to the game with this post.
It's been known for months now that the KKK spec is soon to be extinct. It should be noted though that the KKK spec was created as an ambulance purchasing specification for the federal government, not as a manufacturing standard for the ambulance industry. As I understand it, basically if a manufacturer wanted to build ambulances for Uncle Sam, their unit had to meet the KKK spec in order to get the work. Over the years it was pretty much the manufacturing standard by default since nothing else existed.
Many EMS agencies have been moving away from the traditional open end bench seat configuration for several years now.
The NFPA has been working on an ambulance standard for the past few years (NFPA 1917). It either just went into effect this year or will be shortly.
I recall reading a couple months ago that there's work being done from the EMS side of things on some sort of standard since the NFPA standards are viewed as "Fire" standards and not necessarily applicable for non-fire-based EMS agencies.

Won't matter in westchester given the average bls ambulance response time. You're guaranteed an anoxic injury.

I live in Beaufort County, town of Port Royal. Some things are cheaper others aren't. Apartments here start from $500 and maxed out luxury apartments can be closer to $1000. That aside; Beaufort County lacks a full roster of EMS professionals working for them so the employees they do have it's not uncommon for up to two (2) overtime shifts per week. Some stations don't even do a call a day- easy money. That adds up to paychecks for most EMT's per period around 1200 Post Tax. EMT's and Paramedics aren't a dime a dozen (for lack of a better term) as I feel they are in New York. That's why most agencies in South Carolina have a hard time operating at full staffing levels.

Coming from someone who used to live in the Hudson Valley and worked commercial i understand how that doesn't sound very appetizing. However what most people forget is the cost of living is substantially cheaper (my luxury 2bed 2 bath apartment w/ a fireplace and a screened in porch) is $700 a month. Gas is $2.87. It's a wash. But it's a tough concept to grasp for most people in the Hudson Valley. Construction is booming in the area here and jobs are plentiful.

Also volunteer firefighters in some area's get paid by call! U need to do a REAL physical and PT test. Also need national cert's and say ya'll...I'm workin on that...

The patient was emergent enough to requires RLS at 5:00 a.m., but not so emergent as to require one of the providers to ride in the back? Am I missing something?

citystation1848 liked a post in a topic by EMT348 in Care 1 ALS services suspended
First, I'll start by saying that the fact that it is sad that very skilled and experienced paramedics are losing money because of someone else's mistake. There's no way to officially know who is at fault. I use the word officially because unless you're an administrator at Care1 or an official with the Regional EMS Council(s) or the State DOH BEMS all you can do is speculate and even if you were in one of those three catagories, I doubt seriously that you would be on here discussing this. That brings me to my second point. The rumor mill. I noticed a few 'speculative' posts before mine here and I just want to say that those who know nothing should say nothing.
Instead of gossiping and talking trash about another company, how about we work to correct the completely screwed up method in which things are done by the EMS system in place in this state? EMTs being limited due to the fact they can't carry certain equipment because it's too expensive or because people are too concerned with their own agencies losing business. We do what's right for patients, not what's right for business. Period.

Typical attitude of someone young and ignorant. Where's your so-called "proof" or "evidence" that union's are nothing but a "bunch of mafia thugs" Do you know anything about union's or have you been listening to the typical company mantra or maybe your a manager who's deathly afraid of unions? Crossing a picket line? It just shows low character and poor moral fiber on your part. So you go on line and trash those who want to have better working conditions in the workplace? Well Merry Christmas to you too.
I do agree with you on one part of your post; yes, your opinion is biased and you should have stopped right then and there as opposed to sharing your biased screed with us.

911 doesn't even bother with dispatching Empire/Regional/Hudson Valley Paramedics/Care One on the off hours because they know they dont post a truck in the valley during those times. I quote a manager from HVP "they get what they pay for". MLSS picks up all the slack nine times out of ten

What can we take from this?
-Sometimes you have to imagine how things will play out in the paper and the damage that can be done to the reputation of your orginization.
-If your an officer be the officer. It is your job to be the voice of reason when things get out of hand.
-It's 2011 this is how things are we are not going back to the old days.
The alleged conduct is both illegal and sick. Instead of making this thread another gripe about a black eye for the fire service lets try to be vigilant and do our jobs and make the tough decisions to keep or orginizations on the level.

citystation1848 liked a post in a topic by SFRD372 in Stamford Engine 1 After Being Struck On I-95
As the driver of SFRD Engine 1 this morning I just want to say that ALL precautions were taken while we were operating at a fully involved vehicle fire. The vehicle that was on fire was located in the breakdown lane of I-95 southbound. CSP had two patrol cars on scene , both with their emergency lights operating, both blocking the breakdown lane. As we approached the scene I positioned the engine approximately 75' short of the fire and at an angle that took control of the center and right lanes of I-95. CSP had also put out road flares to warn southbound vehicles of the hazard. Second due SFRD Engine 6 arrived shortly thereafter and also blocked the right two lanes of I95. During the incident the left lane of I-95 remained open and vehicle traffic was passing the scene at full posted speed limit (55) and at much greater speeds, in my estimation. After extinguishment Engine 6 was clesared and Engine 1 remained on scene. The crash ocurred as the damaged vehicle from the fire was being loaded on a flatbed wrecker. The impact was immense! The tractor trailer continued down I95 approximately 600 yards after impact. Fortunately all three firefighters and our Officer were unhurt by the impact or flying debris. One of the CSP Troopers was hit by debris and was transported to Stamford Hospital for minor injuries. The tow operator was uninjured. The impact from the tractor trailer lifted the rear of the apparatus 1-2' off the ground and forward approximately 4'. The vehicle's maxi brake was applied as well as the rear tire being chocked. All members were wearing high reflective safety vests over turn-out gear. The cab and trailer suffered signifigant damage as well. The SOG's developed by the SFRD concerning apparatus placement at vehicle fires DEFINATELY prevented injury to SFRD personel. <br>

citystation1848 liked a post in a topic by spin_the_wheel in Legislation passed protecting volunteer firefighters and EMT's
I agree, this has been going on now without a bill. You have to know what your boss will allow and what your responsibilities are. I know many f/f's who are allowed to leave their jobs now for BIG fires, not the everyday automatic alarm, but a big worker. Many village employees allow f/f's to leave work. I know a village where the 3 man sanitation truck is all f/f's and lets this truck go to the fire house on alarms. This is not a busy village fire call wise but they do what they have to do.
In Nassau County ALL county workers get fire day hours, meaning if a large worker or other serious emergency happens, they can take time off from their next scheduled shift. This is used when they are off...so this would cover the other post about someone at a fire all night then have to report for a day shift and operate a bulldozer. No one takes advantage of this, and it has been in place for decades.
There are just some people who always want to chime in on the negative side whenever it is a volunteer issue. But I understand to many it's buisness not personel..it's a union thing and its all good, I understand that, but sometimes it seems they really go out of their way to try and find negatives all the time.
Good news is these people will be long retired, and the Volunteer Fire Service will still be responding to alarms!

Legislation protecting volunteer Firefighters and volunteer EMT's from disciplinary action resulting in either being late or not reporting to work due to a bona fide emergency to which they were dispatched.
The bill now sits on Governor David Patterson's desk awaiting his signature which would make it law within the state.
Thank's to FASNY for helping this bill to come to fruition.
