Our department has a standing policy that members are supposed to respond to a station to man the apparatus unless they have to directly pass the scene and can perform operations if they stop (i.e. they have thier gear with them). That being said, there are always those members who will respond directly to the scene. It is up to your Fire Police to control the scene and direct the members where to park. Our SOG(P)'s also say that members responding to the fire scene will follow the direction of the Fire Police and park on the same side as the incident as far away as possible. In the northern suburbs and the more rural areas such as the Town of Carmel, we find more roads being constructed that do not connect to other roads and end in cul-de-sacs. This is fine for the residnets who dont want a lot of traffic going through thier neighborhood but it creats a major problem for the Fire Departments to effectivly have a tanker shuttle operation. the members who respond to the scene have to remember the whole picture and not just the tunnel vision of getting there. We have to have our Fire Police in place right away to effectivly control the scene and we need to educate both our members and the other responding emergency services not to get in our way. We responded to a simple odor of smoke in a residence last week and as the engine came up the driveway there was a blue/white car parked at the top because the occupant didn't want to walk up the driveway. Needless to say he was there for the duration and could not leave and "TOT the FD". What was worse was that he was one of the supervisors who routinly tells his men to not get blocked in while responding to fire calls. LOL

The new Radio Designator will be Putnam-911. It looks like the roll out will be pushed back to Tuesday 2/22 to avoid the holiday weekend. The Dispatching staff has been in training this week to learn the new Medical Priorities Dispatch System and the Pro-QA compouter system. The new CAD system will be loaded in about 2 weeks. A lot of details are still being worked on. The Dispatchers will include 3 transfereing over from the PCSD, 1 re-hire (Look out Brewwwwster-Sandy's Back), 4 new full time hires and several part timers. We hope for a smooth transfer so please work with us. We will be a warm and fuzzy center as our new supervisor says EJS1810 AKA 40-303 AKA ?????????????

All right guys, I have subscribed to this thread and every time someone replies, my computer beeps. It's starting to interfere with the TV. It also keeps distracting me from my computer game. Lets just say that it takes a lot to be a Dispatcher, no matter what training you have, no matter what classes you take, and no matter how much time you have on the job, the kid in the front seat of the engine with six months in the FD knows more then you will ever know and isn't afraid to tell you. We are our own worst enemies. We get a system such as the Knox Box system then we work to circumvent it. Yes someone could tape and playback the DTMF tones but they would have tohave the proper one for each vehicle. also someone at the control center would hear them and wonder what was going on.
-
We keep ours on the first due engine out of each station (Headquarters and Buckshollow Rd have TIC's now and Crane Rd's is on order for the new engine.) If and when we get our FAST Team operational they will take it off the engine before the truck responds. Update 5/1/2005. First due out of each Station (3) now has a Bullard TIC

When you use the Securelock with the key there can be no abuse. In Putnam County Brewster has the keys in the Chief's cars and the 3 engines. In order to access the key we (40-Control) have to send out the DTMF tomes to release the key. We can only do it on a call or if it is a test we need to make an CAD event for a drill and record the badge number of the member requesting the key. The only other departments in Putnam that use the system are the 3 departments in the Town of Carmel. The School Districts and several municipal buildings have the knox box tied into the burglar alarm. Open the box and the burglar alarm goes off. With either of these systems it is hard to abuse the key.

Does anyone know of any other websites like EMTBravo in New York State? I know there is www.Signal99.com in the Syracuse area, www.MCFW.com in the Rochester area, and WWW.SullivanCounty911.com in Sullivan County. Is there anything on Long Island, Albany-Colonie, or the Adirondacks that we can check into? A lot of the issues are not unique to this area
-
Jeff, go for it. Dont forget to include 46.44 and 46.54 so people hear the whole call. Ya might think about 154.370 or the input if you pick up brooklyn

I'm Looking for dicussion boards not websites. I am interested on what else our brothers/sisters in NYS are experiencing?

We have to teach them to crawl before we can teach them to walk

There are two response modes, Emergency Response and Non Emergency Response. I have major isues with "Proceed with Caution". Non Emergency is the opposite of Emergency. So what would the opposite of proceed with caution be? Proceed with reckless disreguard for safety?

One of the reasons for radio identifiers that Putnam and Dutchess is to eliminate confusion. Dutchess used to use (Department Name) Engine 1, Engine 2, Truck 1, etc. The problem lies with mutual aid calls when you might have 4 Engine 1's on the scene. that tends to get confusing on the radio.
-
Thanks to the proper placement of the engine a tragic event was prevented. Blocking is one of the most importent things we do on the scene today. There was a picture in the Journal News the other day of an accident on I-287. It showed the engine angled in to the scene but it was past the accident.

The original call the deputy was dispatched to was a tree down in the roadway

I believe that most departments have gone past popularity in their department elections. I see departments/districts looking at the qualifications and ideas of the candiate.

Congratulations Ed, We are going back to KME on Monday for final inspection on the new 18-2-3 and should have it in the next two weeks. Perhaps E-185 and 18-2-3 might work a job together in the future. Good Luck EJS
