  1. No department in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Nassau, Suffolk and all other counties in the tri-state area can compare to NYC in terms of size or manpower. They provide "mutual aid" to them selves (so to speak) with the multiple alarm assignments. There are other "large" cities, Washington DC, for example that use Mutual Aid on a regular basis. Prince George's & Montgomery MD Counties regually are in DC on calls.
  2. if you read the entire report it covers all aspects of government not just fire. it is a bold move to reduce government on all levels.
  3. All Officers aquitted of all charges.
  4. Thanks Jodi, I now remember that is what it stands for, From thefreedictonary.com jerk·wa·ter (jûrkwôtr, -wtr) adj. Informal 1. Remote, small, and insignificant: a jerkwater town. 2. Contemptibly trivial: jerkwater notions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [From jerkwater, a branch-line train, so called because its small boiler had to be refilled often, requiring train crews to "jerk" or draw water from streams.]
  5. Ifin I remember correctly, "Jerk Water" is an old river term. Montrose used to have Jerkwater Day, it was their Officers Party. I am happy to see it back. Unfortunatly I cannot be ther to see the boys, I have to go to the Instalation Dinner for my friends from Freeport LI. I'll see my Montrose friends soon. Have a great time! Hoarh for Montrose!
  6. Wasn't me, just a fellow Putnam 911 Dispatcher
  7. Does this guy look familar?
  8. It's Up, no wait it's down again. Now it's fixed again, it's getting agravating
  9. My county announced we would be using the response determinates recomended by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch. The local departments said they would respond how they normally respond and will not use the response modes recomended by a nationaly recognized organization. If I heard "what if" one more time when we tried to explain the system I was going to scream. It's a large box..........sometimes it's hard to get out of.
  10. It's thinking outside the box. From Fire-Rescue Magazine Several years ago, the St. Louis Fire Department (SLFD) established an "On the Quiet" response system, in which only certain calls require lights and sirens. Many other fire departments have also followed the example, dictating when lights and sirens will be used — and when they won't. For example, SLFD companies respond with no lights or sirens for automatic alarms, sprinkler alarms, natural gas leaks, wires down, calls for manpower, highway wash-downs, lockouts, carbon monoxide detector alarms, and fires in rubbish, weeds and dumpsters. If a call is dispatched as a quiet response and the dispatcher receives additional information indicating a life is in danger, people are injured or there is a working fire, dispatch will upgrade the call to "urgent" and the responding apparatus' lights and sirens will be activated. Since the SLFD implemented the silent alarm policy for non-emergency response, the department has significantly reduced the number of intersection vehicle crashes … and the city is still standing. 11. Lights & Sirens have to be on when responding in an Emergency Mode and you are "requesting the right of way" i.e. going through red lights/stop signs, traveling in the opposite lane, etc. If you are responding Non Emergency in the normal flow of traffic an accident is like any other accident. This is another of the old falicies of the fire service that you have to go lights & siren to everything. St Louis FD has a long list of calls they respond to "on the quiet" or in the Non Emergency mode.
  12. IMHO, the term "fully involved" is used too often and inapproaitly (sp). I see a lot of unburnt wood for "fully involved". I did not hear the onscene report but it looks like it should have been "Heavy Fire on side X"
  13. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. If we have to tell people to respond with caution, does that mean they normally respond with reckless direguard for safety? I alway say there are 2 response modes, Emergency or Non Emergency. In the Non Emergency mode you respond no lights or siren with the normal flow of traffic.
  14. Date: 04/16/2008 Time: 1400 Location: Plattakill Frequency: Ulster 33.480, Orange 154.250 & 46.160 Units Operating: Multiple Description Of Incident: Large Brush Fire. OC-911 requesting all departments that can supply a brush truck & 5 firefighters to landline OC-911. OC-911 also backfilling OC Stations Writer: EJS1810
  15. I couldn't make it for this call as I had to go in to work but it sounded like a quick knock down. Interestinly, this is the third working fire at this house since I joined 30 years ago. Talk about bad luck
  16. Record on line has a bunch of pictures and video of the fire. I like the guy with the safety officer turnout coat, no bunker pants and 3/4 boots turned down.
  17. Do you live in the East Wing or the West Wing?
  18. 24-8-1 i believe is the former Chief's pickup with an utilty body installed on it
  19. The NYS V&T Laws were changed to allow rear facing blue lights on Police Vehicles only. While I agree that fire vehicles can also benefit from the increased visibility that the blue lights give, they are still illegal on a fire vehicle under the current NYS laws. The Fire Services needs to lobby our lawmakers to allow us to leagally display the blue light to the rear. Until then we need to follow the existing laws.
  20. If the call is in Westchester and 60-Control recieves it, they dispatch them on 46.26 and then call Putnam 911 (usually by landline) who dispatches them on 46.380. CV then signs on to Putnam as 14-X-X and to Westchester as E-XYZ. If the call is in Putnam County, 60-Control usually is not involved and only Putnam 911 dispatches them and they call out using the Putnam Numbers. I believe it goes like this: 14-1-1 Car 2131 14-1-2 Car 2132 14-1-3 Car 2133 14-2-1 E-230 14-2-2 E-231 14-3-1 MA-23 14-4-1 Tanker 11 [Gee i thought it was Tanker 1 once ] 14-6-1 R-39 A little confusing?, probably (Capt, what county are we in?). More so for the Officers/Drivers who have to remember who to call and what to call themselves. They are actually pretty good on that and usually don't call the wrong control center. Practical?, probably not. They have to buy & issue 2 pagers. Members have to carry two. With a cell phone now you start to look a little like the guys from Beauty & the Geek.
  21. Two men were sitting next to each other at a bar. After a while, one guy looks at the other and says, "I can't help but think, from listening to you, that you're from Ireland." The other guy responds proudly, "Yes that I am" The first guy says, "So am I. And where about from Ireland might you be?" The other guy answers, "I'm from Dublin, I am." The first guy responds, "Sure and begora, and so am I. And what street did you live on in Dublin?” The other guy says, "A lovely little area it was, I lived on McCleary Street in the old central part of town." The first guy says, "Faith abd it's a small world, so did I.! So did I. And to what school would you have been going?" The other guy answers, "Well now, I went to St. Mary's of course." The first guy gets really excited and says, "And so did I. Tell me, what year did you graduate?" The other guy answers, "Well, now, let's see, I graduated in 1964." The first guy exclaims, "The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same bar tonight. Can you believe it, I graduated from St. Mary's in 1964 my own self." About this time, Vicky walks into the bar, sits down, and orders a beer. Brian, the bartender, walks over to Vicky, shaking his head and mutters, "It's going to be a long night tonight" Vicky asks, "Why do you say that, Brian?" "The Murphy twins are drunk again." Happy St. Patty's Day to all!
  22. So Lime Green over Red lost out?
  23. This is one of the problems I see with the arrow sticks. When we first put them on the rear of our Chiefs cars we had the Code 3 haolgen that you could set to flash or point to the left or right. The lights flashed in a slow enough pattern that you could follow them. When we got our two new cars with the LED lighting they flash so fast you cannot follow the pattern. When you see the large DOT signs they flash s l o w l y so you can understand the message. The other problem is that people leave them on in the flash mode all the time. I see apparatus going down the road all the time with the Arrowstick flashing. Leave them off till the apparatus is parked then engage the light in the direction you want the traffic to g to.
  24. In Putnam County we dispatch both fire & EMS to all limited access highway incidents. As Kfire94 said PVFD is dispatched to all incidents on the TSP in Putnam Valley. On the TSP in Kent we dual dispatch Kent FD and East Fishkill FD (through Dutchess 911). I-684 gets Brewster fire for all calls. On I-84 it is either Brewster Fire, Patterson & Lake Carmel, or Lake Carmel Fire only depending on where on the Highway it is. I know that the Thruway Authority pays BFD, PFD, & LCFD for thier response on the highway
  25. Nothing better then working 7 and getting paid for 8! OT of course!
