Im my department we have fd owned rigs where we run BLS only. We rely on a commercial ALS agency especially during the day when we are understaffed. Ive been an EMT for just over 2 years now I have to say thanks to some of the other EMTs and Medics in my department. I was taught quite a bit in my EMT class but the people form my department helped me to learn how to do things in the real world. Im not saying that instructors don't do their job, its just that there is so much to be taught and such a little amount of time to do it in. I was lucky to have been surrounded with EMS prior to me obtaining my EMT. But I can also see why in a sense BLS seems to be lacking. It does seem to be that we are becoming more ALS dependent and at times I find myself depending on ALS to get me through calls. So I too believe that more focus should be put on practical skills. A scared unprepared EMT isn't any help to the patient.

We run twin KME commerical pumpers. They are 2000 international 4900 crew cab chassis'. 1250 pump, 1000 gallon tank eash with 1000' LDH As for them being KME's the one truck is a hunk of crap. Since we got it, the service from them wasn't great. We've had a lot of problems with the pump control mechanism on the truck. It wasn't able to control the pump speed and the pump would run off on us or it wouldnt even pump water. After asking them to replace it multiple times they kept giving us the same product. We were very dissatisfied by theyre service. Not sure how other people feel about KME. Hope this is helpful.

Im an EMT with my college EMS squad. we ran a S10 until 2 weeks ago. we got a ford escape hybrid from our university police department. It sucks as a fly car. Because of the location of the battery we can't put a divider in the back and due to the small size of the trunk we can't put our backboards in and theyre folding ones. As a chiefs car i wouldn't suggest something that small.

Second on TNT. Its a great show. I was bummed out when NBC dropped it. Glad TNT got it. Its one of my favorite cop shows. Its up there with third watch even though third watch was a mix but still a great show.

RIP Officer Falcone. Thank you for you service and the ultimate sacrifice you gave to the citizens of Poughkeepsie and the rest of the community at large.

Here in Hurley, we run chains. We have them on all of our trucks with the exception of our mini pumper and our utility. Our new ambulance has onspots but we have never used them. Our back up rig has chains but our rescue squad officers have decided not to chain up that rig.
-
Here in Hurley, we carry them on both ambulances, our first due engine our rescue pumper and our brush truck. We carry BLS bags on our ambulances, our first due, our rescue pumper and our utility. When we get brush fires we put an AED and a BLS bag on our six wheeler. Everyone is CPR/AED certified. Personally I would like to see those in my department that aren't EMT's or Medics to be CFR's

When I was an officer (even still now) I always ran through my head what day is it, that way i would have some idea of what my man power was going to be. So that would make my determination on mutual aid. Is my draft site plowed out and accessable for my mutual aid, can we get to the location, if not then what do we need to get there, as for rehabi dispatch Mobile Life Support Services for their S.O.R.T truck. for those who don't know it's their Special Operations Response Team, they cone with an EMT and Medic for Rehab.

I just got this scanner for christmas/birthday. I know it has a scan by state function but its not picking up anything around me. I want to know if anyone has dealt with this scanner and if there is a way to punch in the frequencies that i want to scan. Thanks!

Hurley FD (Ulster County) 261 Fire and EMS. 291 in 2009

In my county, dispatch makes pretty much makes the determination on who goes. Most accidents they poll for a police agency. If they feel the need for Fire and EMS then get dispatched with the PD. If it seems minor then they poll of a police agency. If the officer on scene feels the need for Fire and EMS then they have them dispatched. As for my department, we fun a rescue pumper and a BLS ambulance with a mutal aid ALS ambulance from Mobile Life. If we need assistance we request a rescue pumper from one of our neighboring departments.

It's amazing how clueless some people. And for sone people who have commented they seem to resent our hard work and effort. This story brings up similar comments form a devastating fire that I unfortanutely had to be apart of a few years ago.

I figure its about time that I finally introduce myself. My name is Connor Dugan and my screen name is coman. I'm a firefighter with the Hurley fire department in Ulster County. I've been an active member for 6 years. 3 as a cadet and 3 as a full interior firefighter. Unfortunately I had to give up my lieutenant's position that I held for the last two years because I moved out of the district for college. I am an emt-b and I run with my department's rigs. I'm currently in Cobleskill NY for school and fun with my school's ems squad. I'm currently working on my bachelors in landscape contracting and while I'm here goin to get ny medic while I'm here. At some point when I have the free time I'm going to become a mutual aid member with Cobleskill FD. I'm here to share and ask for information. I love the site and I'm glad that it didn't go down because this is too valuable of a resource to lose. Great job to Seth and his team

In my department if you join as a cadet probie status is waived when you get voted in as a full member. If you join at 18 without going through the cadet program you are on a 6 month probationary status. You count but you are limited to what you can do depending on what training you have (I.e ff1)

My firehouse is just over 20 years old and its in some pretty bad shape. Besides raising taxes I was looking for some ideas to present to the department on ways to get some extra revenue to put aside for a new firehouse. Thanks everybody in advance.
