  1. Thanks! Having grown up in White Plains in the 1950s and 60s (the "old" White Plains) it's great to see Engine 69 again. I remember well when the company was still in service. Back in the early 1960s -- before they started buying Maxims -- WPFD had several Seagraves. In addition to Eng 69 (Sta 5), there were similar Seagraves at Sta 3 (Eng 67) and at Sta 7 (Eng 71). IIRC everything else was ALFs. The other four engine companies and all three trucks.
  2. Truth is stranger than fiction. What a terrible tragedy but at least they haven't been forgotten. I'd be curious to know details of the fire they'd responded too.
  3. I'm pasting this just in case someone doesn't read the comments below the article. Still seems to be far from an ideal situation.
  4. What a terrible event. Especially to be suffered by the family of someone who apparently served in WWII. What a very tough job for the Elmsford VFD too. I've worked in Elmsford for about twenty years. Though I don't live there I shop in some of the local stores and really have gotten a feeling for the place, great little village. In another way, this story takes me back to the way central Westchester was when my family first moved to White Plains (from Manhattan) in 1955. There are no private homes left on that stretch of West Main Street (Rt. 119). Gone without a trace. And the father was a route deliveryman for Duvernoy Bakeries. Haven't heard that name in years. Had no idea that such a tragedy took place in Elmsford. Horrific.
  5. Yes very sad incident. By all accounts he was a first-class firefighter and man. http://www.myfoxny.c...re-20120416-akd
  6. Yes very nice shots, terrible incident. There's a vid up on Youtube as well.
  7. Yes it sure was. Having dealt with OSHA following an industrial accident, how the heck is this permitted? I see the guys sometimes standing on the lip of the hopper, holding on to what looks like a hydraulic line. This is while the truck is in traffic, too. I can't believe OSHA is really okay with this. Must be a through-the-cracks type deal.
  8. Meaning the livery driver was backing up, right? The woman killed was reported to be the passenger in the back seat.
  9. I kind of don't understand why this was posted in The Lounge forum, but no matter. Having spent about fifteen years in the taxi business -- as a driver, dispatcher and manager -- I can tell you I feel sick everytime I even think of this incident. What a horrible accident. In that business this is about as bad as it gets. I really hope that poor woman was unconscious before the fire started. The photo of the car crushed up against the divider seems to show very little survivable space in that back seat. I'm attaching the article from today's Journal-News. Basically the same as yesterday's article but updated a bit. Mostly that the ME has determined the identity of the victim but had not reached next-of-kin as of early this morning. http://www.lohud.com...y,%20New%20York
  10. For some reason I can't get the edit function to work. But the first fire was reported at 7 PM not 8 PM.
  11. Below I posted a link to a Journal-News story about two fires in Yonkers Friday evening. The first was reported about 8 PM in a fourth floor apartment in a six-story apartment building on Caryl Avenue in the southwest part of the city. This fire went to two alarms. Two firefighters also suffered some injuries. Around 9 PM a second working fire was responded to, on the east side of Yonkers in a Bronx River Road apartment building and also involving a fourth floor apartment. It sounds like YFD did their usual good job. I'm sure they were stretched very thin by these two incidents and I'd really like to know how they juggled the assignments and etc. As a Yonkers resident I really take my hat off to the commanders at these incidents who can figure out how to accomplish all that they do. Great job guys! http://www.lohud.com...e-fires-Yonkers
  12. I think that's a good observation, although I felt it was more than a split second. But if they compute the traffic light cycle I would bet the POV that hit the EMS truck had entered the intersection on a yellow light. Maybe even red depending on the timing. Does that take the EMS crew off the hook? Probably not but I'm glad everyone was okay.
  13. Below is a link to a youtube video with live footage from the Brooklyn crash site. (The second half is about the fire aboard the USS Constellation in the Brooklyn Navy Yard which occurred just four days later.)
  14. As a property taxpayer and homeowner I'd like to see the consolidation discussed on upper levels. A lot of places do it and it seems like a county-wide fire service would have a lot to recommend it. In fact I've been surprised at how much support the idea has gotten in prior discussions from the members here who are professional firefighters and officers. As a bit of a buff I'm interested in how it could work. I guess what I always wonder about is, some of the less densely populated areas of the county. How you would put paid staff into these areas where you'd have a lot of very slow companies? I guess the answer is it wouldn't be truly county-wide? But I read the article in question and I think a city like the City of Rye would be one of the municipalities that would greatly gain under a county-wide service (even if it was only southern Westchester). And that's no knock against the firefighters who are currently protecting Rye.
  15. I apologize if this has already been posted. Well, I actually I don't. Twice is not bad. I live in Yonkers and love it. I really do. And one of the best things about Yonkers is our thoroughly professional fire department. Someone wrote here recently that whenever they think about YFD they feel proud to be a Yonkers resident. That was a pretty cool statement and it made me realize....I feel exactly the same way. Anyway, click on the link below and then -- please!!! -- vote for 306! http://rescueremodel.com/
  16. I am really disappointed 306 didn't win, and I'm not even a FF, so I can imagine how they feel. Maybe an appeal can be made to Mayor Spano? I don't want to sound like a sore loser, but 306 did take the lead at one point. But just briefly and then in a few short days the Palos crew had a 20,000-25,000 vote surge. They took a 17,000 vote lead and maintained it. After having a 2,000-3,00 vote lead early on their lead was always around 17,000 votes. I kept voting every chance I had but I had the feeling somebody out there had hacked the site. Or figured out a way to game the system. Maybe Sandy Annabi should have to pay for the new kitchen?
  17. Nope you never know. Just voted again. Need the link? http://rescueremodel.com/
  18. I don't want to sound like a sore sport but something is definitely not right. Plus the place looks like a palace compared to Station Six. Guess we just gotta keep votin'
  19. Yes it's very sad and for someone like me, a civilian, downright scary. A city of 60,000 people is pretty darn big to be shutting down it's police and fire departments and start contracting them out. What do we contract out next? The US Air Force?
  20. Not anymore. That Illinois crew is tough. 306 trails by about 12,000 votes. Please, let's get out the vote! http://rescueremodel.com/
  21. Great! Just saw them too, barreling along Yonkers Avenue. Busy company. They deserve it.
  22. Getting a little bit closer! (Down about 2,700.) http://rescueremodel.com/
  23. Don't forget, you can vote again everyday. I just did. Still got a ways to go. http://rescueremodel.com/
  24. This occurred early Saturday morning. The incident report shows this event required a lot of manpower and the location probably made it even more difficult for fire crews. Looks like Yonkers FD did a pretty nice job. Greenville, Mount Vernon and New Rochelle all supplied MA to cover several YFD firehouses. All of this going on in the middle of the night while I was blissfully sawing wood and not many blocks away! The link below has a video. http://www.lohud.com/article/20120108/NEWS02/301080053/Fire-vacant-Yonkers-house-hops-brush-2-hurt?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Frontpage|s
  25. I don't worry about Eli but good to see Bradshaw and especially Jacobs finally got it going. Cheeseland here we come!
