I agree that a Trunking System is extremely expensive, but if designed the right way it can be very reliable. Radio system manufacturers and designers will never guarantee, and it is impractical to expect, 100% coverage. In a trunked system, no coverage means no communications. Bidirectional Amplifiers work very well with addressing building coverage issues, but this makes more sense in the Law Enforcement and EMS community. Firefighters checking for extension can accidentally tear into the antenna wires behind the walls etc. I am surprised Westchester County is not addressing coverage issues with the current Trunk System. A tower is needed in Rockland County to cover the Hudson River Communities.

County Police has 10 VHF sites, which is not enough to cover the entire county. There should be at least 20 sites. A Digital Trunk system would deliver much better interoperability and clearer radio Communications between the Officers and Dispatchers. If an Officer arrives on the scene of a MVA and has to walk back to his car because his Portable does not work. That is a problem.

Westchester County Police should have went with a Trunk radio system.

Thank you Scod601. Has there been improvement with the 10 towers being updated? Do you have information on what type of furniture is being installed in the Communications Center?

I was just curious of the scope of the project and if it has been completed. I have seen it every year in the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Budget. From what i understand, Westchester County Police has 9 transmit sites to cover the entire County. Just hope the Communications Operator at the County Police get the best equipment just like 60 Control.

Did they re-design the communications room? Update the VHF system?

60 Control staff is the best!

It is linked to our conventional frequency. The site is located at Fire Headquarters. Members can hear responding units etc via the pagers. The simulcast does not come over our mobile or portable radios. Anyone monitoring 155.775 can hear the simulcast. Since the mobiles and portables have a Digital Private Line (DPL).

After listening for some time i noticed a couple of dispatcher numbers missing. 655,657,660. I Know the exam for Communications Operator Trainee was given on 09/06/2008. Plus there are two existing lists that they can hire from. Does any one have any further information? Are they hiring and if so how many positions are available?

So it sounds like 3 positions available?
