Pleasantville VAC has on-spot chains on all ambulance. We just purchased a new set of chains for our designated first due snow bus 7602. Pleasantville FD has on-spot chains on R47 and E91. We put regular chains on them anyways in any snow over 3 inches about. I do not believe T5, E259, or E260 have on-spots. We put chains on them when needed. On-spot chains are terrible in any real snow accumulation...waste of money IMO.

Has any one tried to get chains for the new rigs? It is a very cheap safety measure that is easy to deploy. I do not see why any department would not want chains of some sort on their apparatus.

What are people opinions of the new season?

I thought the actually show was informative. That plant is an amazing place. Almost as amazing as the hard work and attention to detail that goes into making a Pierce fire apparatus. Props to the artist who do the lettering and such. Amazing to see that the outlines are hand painted. Keep up the exceptional work Pierce!

Great shots as always. Thanks for sharing.

It's a cold night when rock salt no longer melts ice!!! Does happen quite a bit however... NaCl works to about 5 F and CaCl2 works to about -10 F.

Pictures from a fire that broke out around 2:45AM this morning in Hammond, NY. Two residents were able to jump out of the second floor to escape suffering only minor injuries. Firefighter faced temperatures as low as -28 degrees Fahrenheit. Incident Alert First 3 pictures courtesy of WWNYTV Last 3 pictures courtesy of Newz Junky

This is very true. Luckily I only do this maybe 2 times a year and since I forgot to last night I probably will not do it at all this winter. As far as loosing the radio code and such, yes this could be a problem. However, I am almost positive that all cars come with a sticker (usually in the glovebox) that have the code on it. Also, there is a code that you can put in to override the radio lock on some vehicles...at least Hondas.

On 9/23/2010 Thornwood FD and Valhalla FD held a live burn drill at the Westchester County FTC. Pleasantville VAC's rehab unit was requested to participate and rehab firefighters. Here are a few pics. I will upload some more detailed pictures of the whole rehab process and our equipment at our next drill or incident. Setting up the tent. Basic set-up of rehab chairs and misting fans. Rehabbing firefighters.

Up in the North Country, we are often faced with temperatures down to -30 and beyond. One thing I do to stay comfortable is to leave my gear inside at night and get dressed prior to going out to my car. Nothing is worse then gear that is -30 degrees when you jump in it. Also, in Potsdam we take the caps off of our connections on the pump panels because the drips will freeze instantly when a truck or engine is pulled out of the bay. Myself and a bunch of other guys use a fuel additive to remove water from our gas lines and prevent gas line freeze. When it is real cold like last night, I will actually remove my battery from my car and take it inside for the night. If a call comes in I go and quickly hook it back up to the car. Then the car starts like it is warm. Last night Hammond, NY in St. Lawrence County had a working fire and face temperatures as low as -36 degrees F. It is almost impossible in these temperatures to keep lines from freezing. Hydrant on the hand were not an issue for Hammond last night because they fire was not near any hydrants. Instead a tanker task force was used. The biggest issue was finding a good draft site. They went to several pond and lakes looking for water to find that the pond was frozen from top to bottom. They actually carry big drills (same as ones used for ice fishing) in order to reach water in pond. They ended up having to go quite a ways off shore into the St. Lawrence river to finally reach water.

The same goes for fire turnout gear...last night in Potsdam we reached -36 degrees and had 4 calls between between 3AM and 8AM. Thankfully, I remembered to bring my turnout gear inside. Nothing worse then putting on clothes that are -36 degrees! Stay warm everyone!

I was not at the drill so I do not have all of the details. I believe the vent on the top is to let some hot air out and some fresh air in. That is of course if it is a vet at all...which it appears it is. The unit does set up similar to a pup-up tent. But there are other parts that have to be put in place. If I remember correctly, the legs actually unfold rather then telescope like in a pop-up tent. I will check my facts and also try to post the set-up video ASAP. Thanks for the kind words.

Here is a photo of out new heated tent that was set up for the first time today at a rehab unit drill.

Yes, we experienced the same problem...had to actually replace batteries more often then we thought we would have too.
-
To Update... PVAC just received out heating tent. This tent is hooked up to a propane heater and provides an enclosed room for personnel to warm up and receive rehab.

God Bless the three fallen firefighters. My thoughts and prayers are with your families and friends on the anniversary of this tragic day.

Welcome aboard Matt. Take full advantage of the abundance of knowledge that is passed around this site. There are a lot of very experienced members from FD, PD, and EMS backgrounds. Feel free to contribute to posts and share your knowledge. Even the most experienced and seasoned guys can learn a thing or two from the young guys. Congrats on getting your EMT!

If not taken out early enough then yes, you are adding to the problem. Typically, the cars heating system keeps the inside temperature of the car close enough to inside temperatures found in a home. So the change from car to home is not that great when the car is warm from being used during the day. However, after sitting overnight, obviously the temperature difference is much greater. In the morning, I put the AED back into the car after the car has warmed up a little. My rule of thumb is, if I do not like sitting in the temperature, neither do electronics.

When I have my agencies Officer's Car, I always bring in the AED at night when it is cold to be safe and to not destroy the battery or the entire AED. It is not the storage temperature that is the issue necessarily, it is the idea that when the AED goes from cold to warm when brought in for a call and turned on, the parts of the AED begin to warm up and condensation is created. This moisture can damage the components of the AED. Also, this moisture can then freeze when put back into the vehicle. The same goes for laptops... The police up near where I go to school remove the AED's from the cars when the car is not being used during the winter because temperatures can often fall to -25 and beyond which is below the manufacturers recommended storage temperature range.
