That is an awesome story. Great quick thinking by the neighbor. Maybe we should lay a snowblower up on the hosebed!

Nice work.

It is very sad to say, but it is true. Too often, department do not make changes until tragedies occur. Being a proactive department is ALMOST unheard of. There are some proactive departments out there, but for the most part it takes, a wife becoming a widow, or kids losing their father or mother for anything to change...it is a real disgrace.

Why not use a jet pack? In all seriousness, this would be a tough scenario that everyone would handle differently when in the heat of the moment. I would probably go along with what some other people have said they would do. I would use a deflated airbag or Res-Q-Jack base to to provide a larger and sturdy base for a ladder. Perhaps even laying one ladder down flat and using that ladder as the base for another ladder. It is quite possible that an extension ladder would work, it would probably still have enough reach after sinking it into the ground...a different story would be getting the ladder back out. The idea of performing a rope rescue with a ladder truck is also a good solution. The only issue would be that chances are an engine is arriving on scene first so you wont have a ladder truck to utilize in the critical first moments. As another poster mentioned, hanging from the window and jumping would work just fine. The fall is really not that high and you will be landing on soft ground. The injuries substained if any would be a good alternative to cooking up inside the structure.

In my opinion, there are two types of "lift assists" One is helping EMS or the ME who is on scene and simply does not have the manpower to move the patient whether on a stretcher, stair chair, reeves, scoop, stokes, scoop, etc. The second would be getting called to a house because the caller fell or for some other reason can not get up. I think Remember585 is referring to the my second "lift assist." I can not speak for him or say for sure but that is what it seems. Basically, the question is should FD's or PD's that do not have EMS training, be responding to "lift assists" in which the caller or the patient needs lifting assistance to get up off the floor, out of the tub, off the can, etc. These often are not medical problems just a problem with the elderly or people suffering from a previous injury not having the strength to get up. Now you have FD's or PD's without medical training being in contact and helping to maneuver a patient. What is this patient does need medical help? The patient may say they feel fine because they may not notice a medical issue. The FD or PD agency may also not notice the medical issue because they are not trained to do so. Say the patient dies an hour later....is the FD or PD that does not have medical training liable? Should an agency that has medical training (EMS) go to all "lift assists" for this reason? Once, again, no guarantees that I am getting this right, but I think this is what Remember585 is referring to. "Lift assist" is a non-specific term that can be of assistance to a crew on scene or to a person who is alone but can not get up. Also, great thread!

Thanks for posting some pictures! I can not wait to get back from school and spend some time checking out the new TL-5. From the pictures I have seen and from what people back home have told me, it seems to be a real nice truck. Some departments are having there new ladders outfitted with an LED ribbon light that runs the length of the ladder for this purpose. It also helps with vision while walking up the ladder in heavy smoke. From my experience, this has been a great help. For example... Any chance of the department getting the money back? Lawsuit? Hopefully they have better luck with the next gloves they pick. Stay safe!

After some side discussion the the cutting batteries at MVA's thread, I figured it would be beneficial to start another thread on airbags. It has been noted that airbags and other electronics can stay active for up to 30 minutes after a battery has been disconnected. Perhaps, remove the air bag fuse. This will most likely be in the fuse box in the footwell of either the driver or front passenger compartment. This should instantly disable the airbag. Do any departments require or practice the technique of cutting out deployed airbags? This is often a good idea and I have doe this on numerous occasions. I do not know how often or if it is possible at all, but cutting out the airbag will eliminate the risk of re deployment or further deployment. I have also heard that car manufactures are no longer required to label airbag locations. Meaning no more SRS or Airbag stickers or embroideries. I guess, when in doubt, assume there is an airbag there! Does anyone have experience using the airbag restraints such as the Secunet Airbag Safety Cover? Do they work? Easy to set up?
