  1. That is correct. I spoke with a KFD member who explained it. Thanks.
  2. I am not 100% positive it was in fact KFD's HQ, but for some reason it rings bell. I remember seeing it several years ago. Perhaps in the room with the poker table...I really am not sure. I've been in too many FD's in the past 5 years too remember each one. Also, I am not speaking negatively of KFD!! I think they do a great job and are a great group of people. Just trying to contributing a controversial item from memory.
  3. Yes, I know they are to protect against violent crimes. I meant that they have the same basic purpose. Street boxes are for reporting fire related events and "blue boxes" are for reporting violent crimes to hopefully alert law enforcement before the crimes happen. But, say this box malfunctions like a street box and a young lady becomes victim to a violent crime. She had a cell phone but saw the "blue box" and used it to connect with the police but the box did not work. The school that is in charge of the boxes is responsible, right? I often hear of police departments responding to false calls that have come in through these "blue boxes." Or people push the button and get connected with the police but then walk away, leaving the dispatcher on the line with silence. So for the school, knowing that practically everyone has a cell phone and can dial 911 or the campus police number, is are the blue boxes worth maintaining? I would think no, but there sees to be more and more of these being placed on campuses.
  4. Interesting. It definitely makes sense to get rid of them. A similar thread already exists. Thread On college campus across the country, there are the "blue stations" that have a direct connect to campus or town/city police. Are these worth maintaining? I would think the liability would be similar, if it were to malfunction.
  5. This is true. Good point!
  6. I am a firefighter/EMT and don't see rehab as an "EMS Prison." I see it as something that can and should be taken advantage of by firefighter. I do not like people getting in the way of my job as a firefighter but I also know that while I'm on my 5th bottle there are people outside who have only gone through 1 or maybe 2. If I can go over to "EMS Prison" for a few minutes to ensure that my blood pressure is at a good level, and let someone else get a little work, I will. I'm not saying that because I am part of an agency that has a rehab unit. I am saying that because it is the safest choice for me. With the amount of people standing around at 99.9% of fire incidents, a few people at a time going to rehab for say 10 minutes, is FAR from getting in the way of the firefighters and preventing them from doing their job. Who know maybe the 10 minutes spent in "EMS Prison," will catch something, get your levels back to a safe range, and save your life. allowing you to continue your job as a firefighter at the next alarm. If you die 2 hours after the alarm, does that not get in the way of your job as a firefighter? I would think so considering the fact that you're dead. In the end of the day, I do not think I have ever kept someone in "EMS Prison" for more than 10 minutes max...and all of the people I have rehabbed, have been thankful for the services. Doing everything possible to avoid "EMS Prison" sounds like an ego problem in which your ego is getting in the way of your smart thinking and safety. Does your family want to hear from THE CHIEF, "I'm sorry to say that due to your spouses decision to be inside on pack #9 and not get checked out in "EMS Prison", while 20 other firefighters stood outside waiting for the chance to use bottle #1, your husband/wife suffered a massive heart attack after the job and has passed away." Or would they prefer to hear, FROM YOU, "The fire was great today, I got to do a lot of work, then took a breather and got checked by EMS to make sure that I could go back and continue my hard work." In the end, it is up to the firefighter to make his/her own decisions in regard to his/her safety. You just have to hope that ego does not get in the way of smart thinking. A Firefighter is only as good as his team and the people who trust in him. They are trusting you to stay safe and show up for the next shift. If people want the rehab discussion to continue, a thread was started a while back that turned into a general rehab discussion... Rehab Thread Back to discussing the GREAt job done by NRFD and all the departments that worked the massive fire...
  7. I think that, yes it does bring out strong feelings in some and could be controversial but I also feel it is a part of the fire departments history. If the department or company is against it, vote and change it then frame a badge to show the history of the company/department. This really is not aa huge deal and I think it could have been handled with a lot less commotion. I think I remember seeing something in Katonah's HQ while taking a training course there. If I remember correctly, it was a framed flag with a swastika on it. This is a piece of history , should it be taken down? I don't think people should necessarily take offense to it...it is a part of history, a bad part of history but history nonetheless.
  8. Any other departments? Does anyone know the number of alarms transmitted each year by the street boxes? Pleasantville has a box on the front of the Washington Avenue firehouse...it works but has not been used in at least the last 5 years.

  10. Awesome video! Amazing job by NRFD and all the other departments that worked the fire.
  11. Just watched both episodes online. This show is awesome. I think it is just as good as Southland, which is on in about 40 minutes! It is fun to have to great law enforcement series going at once and on back-to-back days.
  12. A thread about cameras was recently started about two months back. But, do you see any use for this in FD/EMS vehicles?
  13. No front airbag for the driver? or did I miss it? I bet the most forwards passenger who went into flight, is sore today! Awesome video!!!
  14. CO monitoring, heated enclosed environment (tent), who knows...
  15. Nice job by both FDNY and FDMV! Two FDNY firefighter were also injured during a 3rd alarm fire in Queens yesterday. Hopefully all 8 FDNY firefighter are back to normal health quickly. Stay safe! Incident Alert
  16. Perhaps he realized that the "amazing" DJ Henry screwed up big time. Or perhaps he realized that if he were a Police Officer and his life was being threatened, he would also use deadly force to defend himself. I personally would come and go quietly if I knew it was not worth defending and a case worth fighting for. But by making the trip he at least shows interest which is good for his image and public relations.

  21. They should have fixed spelling...rookie mistake! I like how it says "We will not stop until Mr Hess is held accountable for killing our beloved DJ." Shut up...your beloved DJ tried to use his car as a weapon and kill or injury our beloved cops (and good friends)! I understand that this is a hard time for the family and friends of DJ and his death is a tragedy since he is just a kid, but the family and friends of DJ need to move on...cops eliminate deadly force with deadly force. They will not just stand around while their lives or their fellow Officers lives are at risk. Instead of putting all blame on the cops, blame DJ and his terrible decision to drink and drive while not intoxicate but s***faced. Smart people make stupid decisions, but so do stupid people. From what I heard about DJ's grades...he is not the genius, his friends and family made him out to be. It is a shame that this all happened and that DJ's family lost a son, but now it is time to continue on with this nightmare journey and get to the end of it. RIP DJ...thankfully because you are doing so, our Police Officers are not.
  22. This is great news and IMHO the right decision by the Grand Jury. Officer Hess is a great person and a great Police Officer. I have known him for several years now. It will be interesting to hear people responses to the Grand Jury's decision. The next couple of days will be filled with press releases...
  23. Just out of curiosity, what was done in terms of rehab? Any rehab units assigned to the job?
  24. Pleasantville FD is Friday, June 3rd. BE THERE!!!
