  1. That seems like an excellent way for the department to show flexibility and understanding of peoples different work schedules. With how low most fire departments are in terms of membership numbers, department can not afford to lose members simply because they are working on the typical drill/training night. The method of training that you described would work best with a one company department. For departments that have multiple companies, and hold company drills every month and not necessarily department drills, this could be a little harder to work out, but I am sure that it is worth the effort to attempt to do. This type of flexibility is a must now-a-days.
  2. That bulletin is just for that specific class. Yes, you are right, that class is a combo class of FF1 and FF Survival. Hopefully one day, all FF1 classes will include FF Survival. IMHO these two classes a re definite must for all firefighters.
  3. The entire event has been a complete tragedy. It is a shame to see what is happening in London. The fires being set have such devastating potential. I just pray that the Police, EMS, and Fire personnel stay safe and out of harms way.
  4. Lucy has been doing a great job for years! Has anyone had any certificates reprinted? Im taking a course tomorrow so I will stop in and see what can be done.
  5. Not many things more uncomfortable than a really bad sunburn. 2nd degree sunburns are actually a lot more common than most people think. Too many people underestimate the power of the sun. It is great to spend time under the hot summer sun but you MUST know how the sun affects you. Too many times, I have come across people who took a nap outside and woke up with really bad burns. Like another poster said, being in water for prolonged periods under the hot sun cane be very harmful to your body. I always think about this when I am at the beach, pool, or lake and I see young children in the water all day.
  6. I am not 100% sure whether or not Firefighter Survival is part of FF1 now. I know that when I took FF1 several years ago, some FF1 classes included Firefighter Survival at the end after the final live burn. Unfortunately, my FF1 class (which was the two week day course) did not include Firefighter Survival. I took Firefighter Survival as a separate course. IMHO, if Firefighter Survival has not been added to all FF1 classes already, it needs to be! In general, I think that there needs to be more training done more frequently. I do not know much about how training works with career firefighters but I do know how it works with volunteer firefighters. In general, I see way too many volunteer firefighter that stop signing up for courses after they get the basics (FF1, FF2, Survival, etc). I know that there will always be excuses but in reality one course per month is not asking a lot. 2 nights a week for two weeks is doable by everyone no matter what your job is. Not to go off topic but...I would really like to see more courses offered more frequently. AVET is one that comes to mind right away. It is great that the County is working to make it easier for college students to become firefighter, but making FF1 more easily accessible is not enough. I have found that when I am home from school for breaks or for summer, not many classes are offered. A lot of course are offered in the Fall right after students go to college and in the Spring right before students return from college. Hopefully this will change.

  9. I have not used these tools yet so I should nor be commenting but... Depending on how well they cut high strength steel and how much you can do on a single charge, I would see these as being the most useful for pin jobs that you can not get close to the vehicle than for anything else. If a department does a lot of pin job with the car being well off the road and into the woods or in a ravine, etc, these tools could be a great asset. But for the department that primarily get parkway pin jobs and park the rig as close to the vehicle as is safe, might as well stick with what works and never loses power. I'm looking forward to hopefully trying these and hearing more peoples feedback.

  13. Nice looking cars. Good step forward for the NYPD. Does anyone know the running cost for the vehicles?
  14. I was under the impression that if an EMT certification lapses you have a year to take a refresher. Is this still the case? I heard today that NYS changed the policy and there is now no limit on when you can refresh if your certification lapses...
  15. Will this include County and State courses? Or just State courses?
  16. That makes sense. Thanks Madison
  17. I watched the documentary twice. Both times, I was left wondering the same things and left with same general feelings towards the movie. One thing I noticed that was a little confusing was that Brian Schuler, the son who survived the crash said that (and I will paraphrase) that he remembers flying out of the vehicle like Superman. However, the witnesses (I believe two of them) mentioned that the children were piled on top of each other in the vehicle and Brian was on the bottom. Also, I never heard anything in regards to the toll booth or EZ PASS camera footage. I would think that both of the tolls that she went through (Thruway & Tappan Zee Bridge) could be helpful in observing her behavior. Was this footage obtained and reviewed? Was it made public? Can toll booth footage be made public? I don't se why not... The documentary mentioned the uncertainty about the roads Diane Schuler took after crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge. She may have taken the Saw Mill River Parkway, 9A, etc. The documentary mentioned that she may have taken the Taconic State Parkway north and then came back south on it (in the northbound lanes obviously). How so? The Taconic State Parkway does not exist that far down...it actually begins shortly before the wrecked. Overall, I am not really sure how I feel about the quality and insightfulness of the documentary.
