I think that you are missing the theme surrounding the Vulcans discussion in this thread.... The Vulcans represent a cross section of FF's based on the color of their skin. Aside from you, I don't think anyone is going to argue that point. Based on this skin color association, the Vulcans attempt to use leverage to get more people of similar skin color hired. This is their agenda. In my 32 years on this planet, and 16 years in the fire service, have I ever heard of the Emerald Society fighting to make sure that enough FF's of Irish background were getting hired. The agendas that you speak of aren't comparable.
-
Lets get the differences straight. The Vulcans are a group of individuals where race is a qualifier for membership and the Emerald Society is a group who's members identify themselves as being of Irish or similar decent....An association with a group of countries not skin color. There is a big difference between the color of your skin and the country you come from..... The Irish and English continue to fight in the north, North and South Korea aren't buddies, there are plenty of conflicts in Africa, and check out Eastern Russia's former Republics.. All those folks look the same but they are willing to kill each other with little regard. Please don't confuse race for identifying with your nation of origin. It's not the same. May the Luck of the Irish Protect you !

My 1957 B Model Mack's restoration is nearly complete. I need to find a reliable way to transport it from PA to FL. I would like to give the business to someone who is involved with the fire service or is at least a supporter of the service. I have a CDL but do not own the equipment to make the move. I could be a second driver if needed. I would prefer it to travel on an air-ride trailer. Please PM me if you know of someone who may be interested. -Ed-

Yes it's the "General Ike". Pictures to be shared soon. Old pics linked below from my college FD. Slime lime is how I rode on it to calls as our third due engine until the 1998 HME/Smeal quint was purchased. Other pic with General Eisenhower is how the engine looks once again post restoration. Gettysburg Fire Department Website Go to museum then collection to view.

My reference to the 1944 Mack may be a few years early.... One of the long time members who I am friends with corrected me and said that it is a 1948.... He also said that the 1930's apparatus was a 1937 ALF pumper... If anyone has a pic I'd appreciate it... I'll start a new thread if there is no response here.

I would love to see from this parade or from anywhere else for that matter, pictures of Millwood's apparatus from the black hole between the arrival of the Brockway Torpedo in 1924 and the 1944 Mack. I know they purchased another rig in between maybe two, but there is only one picture of it that I know and it's in a Champion Spark Plugs ad hanging in Station 1. I was part of the crew that got the Brockway Torpedo restored so I've got plenty of history on it. From 1944 on there is quite a bit of info and pics from the two Macks (E244 & E245), The Jeep, GMC (it had many names E246, R36, MA-10), Century Cab ALF (E247), and the Kenworths (TS2 & E248). I'm really looking for the 1924-1944 era. Thanks -Ed-

Reading about my boys from Millwood putting multiple tools into work this AM, I've been thinking about the fire service in Westchester and which departments are well prepared to deal with extraneous incidents. Before I moved to Florida I used to discuss Millwood's foam and water supply capabilities on this site. Since I've left, they have gone from having a fully equipped heavy rescue (R-36) and a pumper with a combi tool (E-248) to a department with a heavy rescue (R-36), full rescue pumper (E-248), and a pumper with a combi tool and "o" cutters (E-247). Briarcliff has also taken an agressive policy toward the ability to "cut" with E92, E94, & R37. I'm curious to know who else is putting multiple tools on the street these days. I think it is valuble for IC's to know, when preplanning who will transfer to their station during a major incident, who has the most functionability. I think E-119 and E-270 are carrying tools as well. Who else has rescue pumper capability in addition to a heavy rescue?

Chief Flynn and Capt. Nechis don't know me personally, so it's not their fault that they don't know how passionate I am about consolidation in my old stomping grounds. I didn't include that in my discussion thus it's their perogitive if they would like to include it in the discussion. The number of Tower Ladders, Cascades, Heavy Rescues and other redundant equipment in Northern Westchester, as well as the cost to the tax payers makes me sick. I am a firm believer that the fire service evolves with the communities that it protects. Today, the majority of Northern Westchester departments are facing a greater possibility of dealing with a multiple vehicle crash then they are with a major structure fire. The fire load in Norther Westchester is evolving into a more modern and easier to prevent large fires scenerio with new construction than what it used to be. On the other hand, roads in Northern Westchester are busier then they have ever been regardless of the widening projects that have gone on. Thus, I feel like placing more hydraulic rescue systems on engines, there is a better chance that rescue services will be provided to those who need it in Northern Westchester's conjested roadways. What Northern Westchester doesn't need any more of is Ladders, Tower Ladders, Heavy Rescues, and Cascades. I ususally reserve my examples for my old department to prevent anyone else from getting their panties in a wad, but lets face it Northern Westchester could dump a bunch of ladders and let departments like Ossining, Pleasantville, Thornwood, Yorktown, Bedford Hills, and Mt. Kisco handle the truck work. Let other departments handle the heavy squad work and everyone else run some form of rescue engine with whatever else they need to get by like a tanker etc. A perfect example is Millwood..... A well equipped rescue wagon in each station plus a tanker in station 2 and mini pumper in staion 1 is all they need... Put a truck from any of the other departments I mentioned on the initial dispatch and you're covered. Everyone leave the apparatus ego at home.... And I definately stopped Taking It Personally (QTIP) a long time ago. I welcome everyone's comments.

I stand corrected.

Article attached to the video says that 343 will arrive in NYC in December and go in service in April. Firefighter II will have it's keel laid shortly.

The thread was started with a quote from another source. Had it specifically been started as a condolence thread I would not have offered my opinion. You appear to be offended by my point of view. If that is the case, I am sorry you feel that way. If the moderators wish I or they can remove my posts instead of locking the thread, however nothing I wrote is untrue, nor have I written anything derogatory toward other members of this forum..... In my opinion this means that you and I should just agree to disagree.
-
I haven't said anything overly political and this isn't a condolences thread. I don't see any reason to lock it down. I based my opinion on the family's history which is public knowledge. If our friends, neighbors, and co-workers acted in the way that most (not all) of the Kennedy’s have over the years, we'd probably re-think who we spend our idle time with. They get a pass because they are de facto members of Americana at this point. I also asked a question based on another post which was not intended to spawn an argument but merely to raise the question given the IAFF's history of supporting liberal candidates (notice I didn't say the IAFF's members vote that way).
-
Do you think the IAFF website would have similar accolades if it had been a republican who had done the same for the service? I'm sure they are out there. As Chief Flynn would remind us.... QTIP

This man came from a family of degenerates, substance abusers, and womanizers. He was responsible for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne under more than questionable circumstances and he never had to pay for it. I find no romance, allure, or otherwise honorable traits (except those listed below) to associate with the Kennedy family.... Especially Ted. John's service in the Navy (PT109 went down off the Solomans) and Robert's efforts to eliminate organized crime were honorable. That's about it. Daddy Joe was a crook who didn't want to deal with his own mentally handicapped daughter, John botched the invasion of Cuba, and Teddy didn't have the balls to call for help when he put Mary Jo roof down in a creek after he rolled his Old's off a bridge.... Not to mention what all the little Kennedy's have done since to hold up the family legacy. May his family members find comfort in the fact that God is merciful to those who repent. One can only hope that Senator Kennedy realized that before he was taken.
-
Although maybe not that popular in the NY Metro area... I'd argue that there are as many without lids as there are with them. I happen to own one that was manufacturered with a roof, and when final inspection was done in 1957, Mack was told to cut it off.

That is amazing. You should tell that story every chance you get. There aren't enough folks looking up to their parents these days. At 60+ when you're kids are hopefully looking up to you.... You're still looking up (maybe literally) at your late father. Bravo!

Not to beat a dead horse, but if it didn't carry water, then it can't be a quint... water, hose, aerial device w/waterway, ground ladders, pump.... Preconnected hand lines are not a prerequisite for a unit to be called a quint (or an engine for that matter), hose must simply exist on the apparatus to be deployed. There are still departments that don't run preconnects on their engines.

RAAEMT6785..... My post won't last long before it's pulled, but I'll call you a friggin jackass who by submitting a post like that, completely disrespects the individuals who died in that attack. You've got a lot of nerve. Was WTC's first attack an inside job? Maybe OK City was an inside job... Now that you mention it, I think Hurricane Katrina was an inside job too! Not to mention the fact that you aren't smart enough to spell all the words in your post correctly. You're pathetic!

Ahhh... I've had countless debates on this site regarding the numbering of apparatus in Westchester. It usually ends up with some off hand comment about it's too much of a pain to change... But I'll put my shorter opinion out there again. Each department in the county just needs a number assigned to it. Take Millwood's chief's call sign that begin 225... Or Department 25... Its REAL simple... Station 25-1 (Headquarters) Station 25-2 (Rt134) Chief 25 Assistant 25 Deputy 25 Truck 25 (Truck 52) Engine 25-1 (Engine 247) Engine 25-2 (Engine 248) Mini Attack 25 (Mini Attack 10) Rescue 25 (Rescue 36) Tanker 25 (Tanker 15) Utility 25 (Utility 44) EVERY time you hear the number 25 on the air you know it's from Millwood.... Instead today it's a big cluster "F" about who's got what and where it's coming from on the radio at a big job... There are 16 tankers in the county. Number 13 is skipped but because Bedford Hills donated the old Tanker 5 to Pleasantville, they numbered it Tanker 57... It's random... All apparatus and callsigns from each company should have a corresponding number that is unique to the company.

In Miami, snake bites are such a concern that there is a local agency that runs emergency vehicals (Venom 1 and Venom 2) with medics specifically trained for snake bites and admin of anti venom which they carry. http://www.miamidade.gov/mdfr/emergency_special_venom.asp

Dude don't assume that HPN isn't busy. They have a good deal of traffic that goes in and out.

Millwood had a fatal one on July 4th of 2003 or 2004... I was first on scene... wrong way DWI entered NB lanes going SB in the area of Peekskill Hollow Road and made it all the way to RT100 before striking a vehicle head on with father, pregnant mother, and young child. Father DOA, young child and mother survived with mother in pre term labor at the ED if I recall. DWI driver with died a few weeks later. Horrible with a single fatal... Can't imagine times 8....

Chris - Agreed that it isn't realistic for a MV helo to get permission/research the codes for a municipality when doing a hot load for a patrient. My brief post didn't get my point across that a pilot shouldn't just put the skids down anywhere they please in an LZ especially w/o announcing their arrival. Things look VERY different from the air than they do from the ground. If I were a pilot (I'm not)... and I had the opportunity to communicate with someone on the ground where I was about to land, I wouldn't pass it up.
-
With regard to helos touching down within any given municipality, there are various actions that need to be taken to gain approval. There was a case not long ago (it was thrown out) where a MV helo put down somewhere in a field in CT to pick up a child. The PD responded and cited the pilot due to an existing ordinance that doesn't allow helos to land within city limits.
