I recently met the cousin of FF Galasso at my Department's Annual Memorial Service in May, whereas FF Galasso was also a Member of the West Harrison FD. She shared this story with me prior to our Services. I was taken aback by her story and the unfortunate situation surrounding his death. Great post, Thank You

Chief ....of the NOT full time departments how many are done by local PD's.
This used to be a problem in Nassau but over the years all the PD's have relinquished the FD dispatch to the County except for the Lynbrook FD. But in their case whomever gets the alarm first transmits, then the county takes over the rest of the alarm and re-alerts if needed.
In Nassau there are 69 responding FD's. County does 38 full time, 39 if you count the Lynbrook case. The other departments have their own dispatcher or are dispatched by another single fd dispatch such as 650 the North Bellmore FD dispatches for North Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick and Lakeview FD's.
County also does the initial dispatch if the alarm comes through via 911 for 5 of those departments. They alert once then follow up with a phone call and the local dispatcher takes the rest of the alarm.

New York State does offer national certification.

I think the term "working fire" has been overused as of late.... A structure fire is a generalized even to describe a fire at a structure... it could be oven, room and contents, chimney, OR working.... A working fire is one that is best described as a fire that is progressing beyond the point of ignition to involve other parts of the structure, rooms, etc....
One room off is not a working fire... a kitchen fire with extention to the floor above is a working fire.... JMHO

Description: Two car MVA, cars landed in the adjacent Bronx River, which is rain swollen and has a strong current. One car was submerged up to it's windows, County PD arrived within minutes and Officer James Rosselli went into the river with rope attached, Officer Matthew Cohn secured the rope from the shore and both removed and rescued the single female occupant....other vehicle tipped on it's side when it went into the river...singled occupant rescued by a nearby Yonkers DPW crew who witnessed the incident.
