  1. The only ways I can see to enforce it is to get on the radio and call out a description and direction of travel and hope someone is in the area, or have a policy that any traffic stop gets a second officer moving to that location so they would be in a position to apprehend any vehicles that don't move over.
  2. I've noticed some posters have commented about 20+ minute response times for FAST. In Orange County that is partially because there is a policy that neighboring departments with FAST teams will not be called because they feel the FAST team firefighters might be too emotionally attached to firefighters in trouble, and may make rash decisions. Does this make sense? I don't think it does. Do police departments have a policy that says neighboring districts can't respond to a 10-13 because they may be "too emotionally attached", I don't think so! Also, I think every department should have a FAST team, not just certain ones.
  3. What are the nursing homes?

  5. I think one of the problems is the City Manager form of government itself. These so-called professional managers, seem to be nothing but professional hack-men, who have no connections to the community that they serve.
  6. But those are just isolated incidents caused by "bad apples", or so sayeth my uber-liberal OWS loving professor when confronted with those facts, as well as Occupy Phoenix's "When to Kill a Cop" brochure. Oh, and they are mainly being caused by homeless who the police are dumping there
  7. In reference to the staffing: Wow. I didn't think staffing was that low. So on a first alarm you are talking 6 to 8 (2 to 3 engines X 2 people + 1 tiller with 2 people) members plus chiefs? So if there are 3 engines and a truck on scene with 8 people, and you have three A/O's who can't leave the apparatus, you are talking 5 people. That is barely enough for 2 in, 2 out right? Am I missing something here?
  8. Just as a (related) aside, what is Kingston FD's normal staffing, I know they are a combo department. I ask because I was in Kingston the day after this drill, and I saw two trucks, an engine with a driver and officer, and it appeared no one else, and a tiller with the two drivers, but no one even in the officer's seat. Please tell me that they have members go to the scene if there trucks are rolling with just drivers or driver and officer.
  9. Test was only supposed to last 30 seconds. It was orginally supposed to last the normal 2 minutes, but because a "live" code was being used the "This is a test" scroll bar would not appear on all TV's. Because of this the broadcasters association told the FCC that it could cause a "War of the Worlds" type mass panic, and asked for it to be shortened or canceled.
  10. Care 1 EMS is the new name for Hudson Valley Paramedics/ Regional EMS. In Orange County they are ALS intercept for Warwick VAC, Pine Island VAC, Florida VAC, Greenwood Lake VAC, Greenville VAC, Lenape VAC, Chester VAC (+ a BLS crew 6A-6P), and ALS backup to Port Jervis VAC. They also have contracts with a couple of nursing homes and Bon Secours hospitals in Orange County. I'm not sure about other areas although I do know they have something to do in Ellenville.
  11. I thought the EMD responses came from the vendor that provides the EMD cards/computer program (normally NPDS/ProQA ©) I also know of a few EMS agencies in Orange County where even though the county 911 center EMD's all calls, they still send the medics to BLS calls because according to them "It is the only way were able to afford our own medics."
  12. What crimes are they including when they say only 1 crime. If they mean only 1 part one UCR crime (murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggrivated assault, burglary, larceny, auto-theft, and arson) then it is completely possible that there was only 1 crime. If they are including all crimes, then I agree that it is highly unlikely
  13. I think it should be mentioned that there is a backstory here, in that the county executive and many of the legislators don't believe the Sheriff should have a police function. They believe in a strict reading of the county charter which only mentions the service of civil process, and maintaining the jail as functions (ignoring the preserve peace and order function present). As the OCSO is currently taking on more of a police function, this could be backlash from that.
  14. I thought county cars were never "in command", there job was to assist the fire chief on scene, not take over for him.
  15. Just a guess, but maybe the county car putting the incident UC with the county meant that no more mutual aid was needed, or the fire was extinguished, but the Newburgh Fire Chief waited until overhaul ops were complete too.
  16. I think that there are a few reasons for these policies including: 1. Fear of anything new (ie. 200 years of tradition unimpeded by progress) 2. Concerns over the release of HIPAA or other sensitive information 3. Concerns over the release of "sensitive" (read embarrassing) information (unqualified leadership, outdated equipment, poor tactics, fiscal mismanagement, etc) If I had to rank the concerns it would be number 3, then number 1; but number 2 is the excuse they use when they are called out for 1st ammendment problems.
  17. The "unmarked" tahoes that everyone is talking about are not really unmarked. If you look closely, they have regular NYSP plates ie. 3K XX . Because the plate has the car number and says New York State Police on it, those cars are officially considered slicktops.

  19. What was Motor Transport labelled as, MT? Is that what became FSD?
  20. I didn't realize the NYPD had white cars in the 80's and early 90's. Very good finds
  21. I think they mean Care 1, which is the latest incarnation of Regional EMS/Empire State Ambulance/Hudson Valley Paramedics

  24. Is this similar to the "rolling roadblocks" that they do in other states. I know in California and Virginia if there is a disabled vehicle in a lane, or debris on the roadway, they have either the State Police or DOT enter the highway at a point before the obstruction and weave across all lanes to slow down the traffic. It wouldn't suprise me if they also do that for congestion. I also know the Port Authority does the same thing at the Lincoln Tunnel. When the tunnel is getting crowded they change the traffic lights to red for a few minutes to prevent more traffic from entering until it starts clearing out.
  25. Deploying some of those to the southern border, I suppose. Maybe that will help to stem the tide.
