As far as the age itself goes, it shouldn't be an issue. I had guys in my academy class that were in their late 30's and early 40's that were far outpacing us youngins physically and mentally. There is something to be said for life experience and maturity.

As far as the reasoning behind this goes, as I read the article, it seems like it is to include more minorities who didn't have a chance to find out about the exam earlier in life.  That, in my opinion, is a department public education problem, not an age related problem. Seems like everyone I know on the job knew they wanted to be a firefighter, and knew someone that knew how to point them in the right direction, or someone to follow.

I'm turning 37 in August though, it's sad all my civil service Firefighter and Cop job possibilities are drying up because of my age. I was hoping to make a comeback!

The City is in mourning over your decision. The amount of shear talent that they are missing must be staggering.
Unless you were one of the 96 people, who passed the first test, the only thing that stands before you is an opportunity to do better on this test.
Incessant whining on the internet must be a better investment of your time than sitting down for 3-4 hours of test time to earn a 30-40 year career that pays a six figure salary requiring nothing more than a high school diploma.
Good riddance, keep riding the keyboard. Let those that have a bit more stamina and fortitude ride the tailboard.
    Out.

Danbury FD is probably the closest. I am not sure how inter-state mutual aid works but Danbury and Brewster have worked together often in the past. Danbury's Special Operations Division includes a "heavy rescue" Squad 1 which is very well equipped with multiple hurst tools, lifting bags, rope rescue, etc. There is also trench capabilities through a dedicated trailer, a "gator", and the CT Northwest Regional Hazmat team which is based at Engine 26 across the street from the Danbury mall. The Hazmat team has a dedicated vehicle (Haz-Mat 1) similar to WCDES and also responds with a support vehicle. As far as manpower I am sure if requested resources sent would include the squad company of 3, an engine company of 3 and a commanding officer (maybe more). All would be highly trained, highly professional, and highly motivated (plus already staffed). I am sure I am leaving some stuff out but its been a long day and that is all I have right now.

Reposting something I put on another forum about this topic with a few additions.
While they certainly acted outside their scope of training and equipment, the NYPD Housing Bureau environment isn't like anything we have here in CT. Unless I'm mistaken, most NYPD Housing beats cover a few buildings, those floors are where they patrol. Its not like they flew halfway across Brooklyn, parked their car in front of the hydrant and ran up, these Officers spend their whole shifts in these high-rises. Was taking the elevator a poor decision? I think the answer to that is obvious. But there's another issue at play here.
It seems to me that there are a lot of people in the fire service who are quick to excoriate a couple of Police Officers trying to do something to help the people in their beat, but some of those same people have nothing negative to say when Bubba rolls the tanker over doing 90MPH to an Activated Fire Alarm and neither him nor the guy in the right seat were wearing seat-belts. And why not? Because its out of respect for the families and the department affected.

My point is, members of our service have made our share of missteps, mistakes and/or plain old bad decisions from time to time, but we don't drag people through the mud. We wait until we know the facts and we show respect for those trying to bury their lost before we start picking things apart. Why don't P.O.s Guerra and Rodriguez get the same courtesy? We're on the same team here, folks.

As someone else stated, the NYPD Commissioner has identified a training gap and has stated publicly that they are going to work to improve it to prevent further injuries or Line of Duty Deaths. Which is more than some Fire Departments can say...

My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Guerra's family and his Brothers and Sisters in the NYPD. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Officer Rodriguez as well.

It's a good thing the worker had the strength to do what he did cause the turntable operator obviously couldn't extend the Ladder if possible any further with the second guy climbing up the aerial behind the 1st Rescuer. What was he thinking and what was he going to do if he got further up? You could see the 1st Rescuer telling him to get back down. And what is the tip load?

I got a kick out of reading the responses attached to the article. Most were of the mind that Cuomo should go. Really? This is NY we are talking about. Is there a more corrupt State governmental body in this Country? Maybe an equal or close, but certainly none more corrupt.
Cuomo or no Cuomo, Albany doesn't change, it just changes those who go there with the intention to make a difference for the better. As they say, power corrupts.
The bottom line here for the volunteers should be, if you expect anything other than the satisfaction of helping your neighbors, when you can, you will be disappointed.

these hoods are getting TOO good in my opinion. Reason being, yes, you want protection, but you also want to be able to "feel" the heat a bit. this will allow one more sense to give you an idea od conditions. These new hoods can practically be brought into an inferno and wont let you feel a thing

    Hey Seth,
I have researched this topic to exhaustion. I have a few pieces of ink and this would be my advice to you:
Yes, eventually it would fade a little due to the constant wear on that location but it wouldn't happen for a while (at least 10 years) and you can always get it retouched later on.
I have only dealt with one shop in the area--The Mighty Horseman in Tarrytown-- the owner and principal artist, Chuck, does outstanding work and is decently priced. For a piece of body art you really don't to skimp. Remember, get what you pay for... and for something that small or just text it wont be that bad anyway.
    Hope this helps.
If you have any other questions PM me

LOL! That's great! I'm in the Army so I know all about that.. I was supposed to visit station 1 this morning because I signed up for the NRFD test but I couldn't make it because I called in to my unit last minute. Any way it's nice to see how far an organization has come. God willing I can have the honor of being a probie with NRFD some day..
    thanks

One of the best way of staying informed of exam announcements is this website. Many P.O and F.F, hopefuls such as yourself post them in this section when they find out about them. There are other websites such as 911hotjobs and usajobs and others that have announcements posted.
The way some jurisdictions work is they have a blanket test, ie Westchester County offers a county wide P.O. exam, then local municipalities will pull off of that list. Other departments will administer there own test (New Rochelle, White Plains, Yonkers, Mt. Vernon...) so they can have total control over the entire process and collect the exam fees.
In my opinion the best way to get into it is try volunteering at your local FD, if available, and get into emergency services that way. You'll see that it is not just a hobby for most people it's a lifestyle. Those are the people that can help you the most. I myself have been trying to get on the job for a long time now... what you have to understand about civil service is it all about the waiting game. Unless you have a big time "hook" (you know somebody) the entire process can be lengthy. Best way to ensure a good chance at employment with PD/FD, etc is to get a 100 on any test they offer and stay clean.
I have had some success with the ARCO books while trying to prepare for a written but recently a found a site that is great. Firequiz.com offers tutorials on areas that are specific to that jurisdiction's test. It's not free but affordable.
I hope this has been a help to you
