Too bad this is starting to become political. The moderators may as well lock down the thread now before it really gets carried away.

May he rest in peace.

What does Armonk's firehouse have to do with this? I don't think any rational person wants to work side-by-side with roaches in a place they have to work/sleep in and it appears to be obvious that most, if not all of the buildings are in terminal condition. Based on what i've read here, it sounds like Peekskill is taking a proactive step in the right direction in considering long-term goals of the fire department.

I think it has to do with risk. Everything you do in life involves risk; you assess what you stand to gain as opposed to what you could lose. In the fire service maximize your risk and you may get to the fire 90 seconds earlier; minimize your risk and you might get there 90 seconds later. Whether or not its your fault, you get into an accident, your truck is out of service and you & your fellow firefighters become useless as far as responding to the scene. I think most posters in here would agree that you should always err on the side of safety and caution. In particular, stopping at red lights, stop signs and the like is common sense; following that mindset should help to keep everyone safe and ensure that we all go back to the station alive when the alarm is concluded.

Very saddened to hear of Sonny Cohen's passing. Having known him through the various county associations that we mutually belonged to, Sonny was the consumate gentleman and a person who was genuinely dedicated to the fire service. His shoes will be very tough to fill. May he rest in everlasting peace.

Good point.

Congratulations!

Goose unless you can find a way to fund a totally career EMS force without taking money out of taxpayers wallets, the volunteers will win hands down. So in that aspect you are correct; just forget it and let it go because it isn't going to happen.

Agreed, but if your planning on serving as a US President, you need to be familiar with major landmark cases (since it helps in shaping policy) and basic geography; when interviewed she thought the Africa was a country as opposed to a continent. I won't get into all of the other faux paux she had, but while she may be strong in other areas, she's lacking in knowledge in many other areas. Furthermore, if she runs, she'd be much better off running as a Libertarian since her current views are more in line with that party as opposed to the Republicans.

She needs about 20 years worth of education in Social Studies and World History. Maybe learn the names & cases of a few Supreme Court decisions besides Roe vs. Wade.

I understand your position, but "Scab" is not the proper terminology to use; I call them something else which cannot be printed in here lest it might violate decency standards that this site maintains.
-
I notice that some people, particularly some of the union brothers, love to throw the word "Scab" around in here. A "Scab" is someone who crosses a picket line and performs struck work or refuses to join a labor union. Call them what you like, but scabs they are not.

Careful JFLYNN, you get lip cancer smoking those things.

Why don't you try contacting the Nassau/Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen's Association? They might be able to give you accurate information you need.

I don't think anyone said that having career firefighters would be cheap. You want services, there is a cost attached to it; it all depends on the level of service the taxpayers are willing to support.
-
Would it be more palatable to you if we were to change the title from volunteer to "under compensated firefighter"?

Happens to most of us at some point.

I think it goes to show that when unions and management are able to form working partnerships, everyone benefits. Good to see that each side came to their senses on this issue.

Hopefully the city will let it rest and not spend taxpayer dollars on an appeal.

The Gloved One has moved on to greener pastures. May He Rest In Peace.

The apparatus is only a part of the overall picture; did you factor in salaries, vacation relief, sick time, overtime, training, cost of benefits, pension contributions etc?

As a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, i'm unaware of any provisions that allow the display and/or use of red lights in vehicles owned by hams solely due to having a license.

I wouldn't be too worried about North Korea; Kim Jung may be crazy but he's not stupid enough to risk nuclear incineration of himself and his lovely country. Its most likely window dressing on his part. Probably going to try and blackmail the US again.

I think Dr. No is pretty competent as well.

Why would I find this funny? Could it be sometimes employees do actions without thinking of the consequences and/or negative PR it casts upon the FD or union? I think its better to show a little humor as opposed to to really sandbagging the employee.
