Nice rigs, what year was 61-A1? Thanks for sharing.

2012 is fast approaching, and auto manufacturers are beginning to deal with the new standards for side impact and roof strength in automobiles. There are two predominant strategies that the manufacturers are utilizing to become compliant: more steel, or advanced steel. Both are an issue, I recently watched a webcast with Ron Moore of FH.com, where he presented his case studies on vehicles with advanced steel, delving into actual extrication, and the methodology behind the use of Boron and other advanced steels. For the most part, he highlighted that most cutters, if any other than a few years - will be ineffective in cutting through the various posts these steels are already being found in (A&. My first question, has anyone purchased a part of cutters or a combo unit that is acknowledged by the manufacturer to be capable of penetrating the high strength layer? What kind of prices are you running into? Also, if you do not have a newer set of cutters - how do you plan to compensate? Like I said before, these steels are already being utilized in vehicle construction - and sawzalls/older cutters do not work. K-12 saws do, but it's obvious why they are not the ideal choice for use in extrication. He presented a few tactics/strategies to help compensate, and I'd be glad to share what I heard/saw if people are interested. To answer my own questions - No - our cutters are a bit older than a few years. And because of that, is why I am starting to do this research - the few methods he offers I think are going to be very helpful. I would like to try out our cutters on one of these vehicles to see what kind of shape we are in for 2012. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to the responses.

Looks great, of course it will take a bit for me to get used to but so far so good from my side of it all. Thanks for everything!

A little background: obvious is my affiliation with the fire service. But I am also a student of journalism at the University of Albany. This semester I took a course in magazine writing - and we are going to write a few articles, but right now we are just doing exercises dealing with the 'start' to articles. So, here is the genre: 'how-to articles,' and I am focusing on the proper use/strategies/techniques for firefighters across the hierarchical system that exists in the service in regards to TIC use. The help needed: I cannot just give my opinion - true objective journalism is my goal and I need sources to do this. This will only be seen by members on this site and my professor. Like I said it is just an exersize and will not come to fruition as an actual article. If you participate and choose to give me said tips and techniques, I just need an email address. I would prefer a pm for everyone's privacy. I know this is a lot to ask but I appreciate any feedback I get. Thanks in advance.

Another possibility for those departments that might need to stretch one truck into three. It's interesting to say the least.

I clicked the link, and came back to the page again with it updated. BFD Commissioners confirm two Buffalo Jake's are missing this morning after a large fire which there were reportedly people trapped inside. http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/local/Massive...nesee_St_090824 RIP to the two Buffalo Firefighters.

http://www.wusa9.com/news/columnist/blogs/...o-basement.html Looks as if Lt. McCarthy fell through the floor first just after the 30 minute mark, and FF Croom was assigned to the FAST Team, who were searching for the already missing McCarthy. Again, RIP Brothers.

I have been to countless affairs involving Sonny, from fire police details, to wakes and funerals, and I was never dissapointed. I am truly saddened to have heard the news yesterday, RIP Israel Sonny Cohen.

I look up to my late grandfather still, as well as my father. Their lessons in and out of the fire services have been priceless!

We upped ourselves a bit and went with the 7400 series International chassis.

We were just about to purchase a chasis in that range for our quick attack, but recieved a letter about this, so we opted to go elsewhere.

I just recieved results for an exam I took last november.

I was told that having the vest already mated with a structural coat was the proper procedure, and to remove it when necessary (Fire Suppression, etc.). The only problem I have had with that is when I am handling traffic control, when I have to pull out the coat and remove the vest. Not much of a hassle, but it was the only negative I found of having it setup that way.

Previous to receiving a grant for 40 something sets, we didn't really have second sets issued. But it obviously created a surplus of the older gear which for the most part have been retained as second sets. I leave my set in my fiance's car for while we are out and about. As far as money well spent, I would argue that it is almost essential if possible, to have a second set available to at least your active members.

I'll be there.

A potentially deadly situation mitigated with an observant chauffeur. Crazy stuff.
