  1. You should submit this to Vent Enter Search. Commercial roofs can pose such interesting challenges or issues that need to be known to all crews on the fire ground from this to this, that, and this. "The building is your enemy, know your enemy," Francis L. Brannigan. I wonder what kind of additional weight load that puts on the roof top and support system for it.. (Edit: the system weights around 1000lbs, half a ton.)
  2. Drangon Fire Alpha X gloves are great if I had to recommend any. A lot of dexterity and feel but with great protection. I hope the guys down there rectify the issues quickly, albeit they may not recoup the money spent on them if the company has really gone under. Were there any field trials or was it because they switched material that this issue came about? Either way, hand injuries are very hard to deal with due to the sudden lack to do practically anything. I hope the injured Jakes recover fast and fully.
  3. One collapse here of a unoccupied storage garage with a flat roof. Several others on the brink before emergency action was taken by the homeowners, some due to simply the ice that is clinging to the side of porches and whatnot.
  4. Congrats to both! I personally have been mentored by George and must say this title is quite appropriate. Best of luck to you both!
  5. Our Chief, Ambulance Captain, Rescue, First Due Engine, Tanker, and obviously Ambulances have them. The last two trucks we purchased actually came equipped with them already mounted in pelican cases. We added the AED to our rescue to compliment the rescue equipment we keep in it. There are very few calls where none of those units are on the scene, so we are pretty well covered there. Slowly I hope to equip the other two engines and our brush truck with them.
  6. Thank you for posting that. I think a lot of the problem that I see associated with electric powered vehicles is the immense amount of variation that takes place in vehicle design and placement of batteries and whatnot. We are finally starting to get the basics of electric and alternative fueled vehicles, but it is the variations which are the mystery and equally as dangerous part left that we have to master. More emphasis is being placed on all of this, which is good. I took an alternative fueled vehicle course at Montours I believe last year and it was a great starting point, think about how most jurisdictions probably see more MVA's than structure fires.. kind of puts an emphasis on the need to be well versed in these fields. Not to take away anything from garnering knowledge on building construction and structural tactics and considerations, but it is something that when put into perspective: vehicle construction is just as important as that of a building. Fire Engineering had a great article on HID lights, and the dangers they could pose during an MVA or Car Fire...
  7. Because not only do they volunteer to perform, they volunteer to do so at a certain level that is safe and professional. Anything besides that could pose to be a danger to the public and themselves. Not saying this is the case here (They may have rested), but there are other instances where simply volunteering to do something does not quite cut it (ie. physical competency for interior fire suppression and other physically demanding tasks).
  8. Millerton (Dutchess) 334, Fire and EMS.
  9. Happy Birthday Bravo!
  10. Retirement and that beautiful weather must be taking a toll on your memory George!
  11. Best of luck in retirement!
  12. Sounds to me like this is being used a political pawn. Peoples lives are being used as counter leverage to support fiscal and legislative agendas.. typical of politicians but still very disgusting.
  13. Stephen Valyou ran unopposed in the North East Fire District (Millerton) to replace Lee Rockwell. How great of a turnout did every district experience for their votes? We did not have many at all..
  14. Correct me if I am wrong, but legally, volunteer firefighters are "employees" of their district/township/whomever is their governing entity. As a result they are entitled to workman's compensation under the insurance their "employer" provides. The interesting thing is I have seen incentive plans and retirement programs fail in some volunteer agencies, even deter participation. Those who may be borderline to the mark for receiving the funds may once they place the incentive as the goal in their mind decide that it all is not worth it to them. But that depends on what you set your mark as. If we ever do move to a LOSAP or retirement program officially, our current benchmark is 60 points. Which is 20 calls, or a combination of calls, meetings, training, etc.

  22. Wassaic's brush truck (correct me if I am wrong Mark), is their main truck for road closures, which is why it was called in.
  23. I don't know how other manufacturers are, but when I bought my Slim-Miser, it came with a wrong bracket. I called Whelen that day and the part was there the next morning, Whelen has always been a superior light company from what I have seen in performance, quality, and customer service reliability. Same goes for the amber slim lighter I use in the back window of my truck.
  24. I've seen a number of fish before, but never frogs.
