This all has to do with reviews post 9/11. There was a recomendation to have in a way 5 of each thing, or each boro can handel it's own stuff. 5 Rescue's 5 Collapse units. Scuba Collapse pods Hazmat tech units. So each boro has some form of hazmat response. etc...

There was one extra Hi-Press Engine built buy Ferrara it was used as a demo unit.. Not sure what they have done with it since, but I think it was also used in some TV shows and movies. The Engine 34 rig that went to Gov Island was a ALF demo rig that the job bought after the 11th. I am not aware of a current order for Engines, so we will have to wait till the bids go out. I think the next set should be 2007 to replace the 1997 rigs. Anything can happen Ferrara was able to build an FDNY spec Pumper and there is talk that the spec will change to 2000gpm pumpers on the next bid.

It won't be heard.... I don't know much about you system, but I am pretty sure you Tac channels will stay the same. Your tones would go over lowband to all the pagers and stuff. Then units responding and all the radio traffic going on between control and field units goes over the trunked system.. Once on scene all fireground goes over the tac.. The Tac needs to stay for safety reasons, on simplex you don't need to worrie about repeaters or tower failing..

All the chauffeur's attend a class at the rock. There are classes for Engine, Ladder and Tractor Trailer operations. Engine class deals with driving and pump operations, and Ladder deals with all types of ladders, from rearmount to tillers. Within the firehouse you have 4 Regular Company chauffeur's, who will be in the same groups as the officers for the most part. The Regular chauffeur's will also do mutal's with another chauffer for the most part, some houses do have ways that like to do things. After the 4 regular chauffeur's you then have other FF's who are trained to fill in when needed. The also use the extra chauffeurs to detail to houses when they don't have a chauffer for the tour. The officer can always override any house rule.

10-14 = Roster staffing Most of FDNY's Engines are staffed by 1 Officer and 4FF's. Theses are called 4man engines. 5 Man Engines are staffed by 1 Officer and 5FF's. aka 5man Engines. There are 64, 5man Engines in the city. If there is a 4man Engine dispatched on a strucal run, the housewatch man of the 4man engine will hit the 10-14 button instead of 10-4 which then will cue the dispatcher for a extra engine. This is why you hear the dispatcher call the Battalion and tell him Engine XX is your 10-14 Engine. The 10-14 Engine will be the 3rd due Engine and can be either 4 or 5man. If a 5man Engine goes down a person during the tour then they will also use the 10-14 button. ------------------------ Just like quervo2300 said, there are only officers who float. Captains are assinged to a Division once they get promoted. Lts get assinged to a Battalion once they get promoted. Until they get assinged a Firehouse, each day they call the Division Staffing office and find out which firehouse they will be working at. They can do any place in the city. ------------------------ FDNY has a required staffing level for the start of each tour. Ladders 1off and 5ff Engine 1off and 4ff or 1off and 5ff. Each Firehouse will have 6 FF's on the chart for each tour. Sometimes all 6 will show up and then the extra guys will get sent to other firehouses to fill the voids. After all the extra guys are sent out to other firehouses, they then will start to hire OT. However if there is a fire and lets say all the ffs from the 1st due truck go sick. They will not hire overtime after the start of the tour. They instead will take the 5th ff from the 5man engines and send them to cover the truck for the remainder of the tour. So about 64 ffs could go sick during the tour before we would start to ride short of the trucks.

Most of the bridges and tunnels FDNY will respond and stage. They will then make contact with PAPD or TBTA and check the status of the call. Some bridges they will go over and investigate. Most if not all the bridges and tunnels have some form of fire protection.. Many do have the small crash trucks that have the ablitity to put out car fires.

Matty Daly is now online with Nycfire.net If you don't know who he is, Matty has been photographing FDNY for many years now and has a very large collections of photos. He is works is used by WNYF and many other FDNY publications. If you would like to view some of his photos stop by his gallery at. Photos by Matty Daly He will be posting some of his recent photos and anything new in this site. We are working on a site dedicated to all the older photos from the 70's and stuff.

These boats are designed by Robert Allan Ltd the same company that did LAFD's.. However Nichols Brothers Boat Builders did the construction of LAFD's. Robert Allan will be building FDNY's. You can visit www.nicholsboats.com to look up the LAFD specs and floor plans. If you take a look you will notice that FDNY's would have a bunch of new things added. Some key things you will notice, small rescue boat ramp, decon area, transport area for around 20 people, communications room. Some comparing. FDNY - LAFD 50,000 - 38,000 GPM 140' - 114' Lenght 36' - 32' Beam 16' - 13' Depth 9' - 6' Draft 9,000 - 4,800 Fuel 1,000 - 750 Potable Water 17.4 - 15 Knots

Now thats a lot of water... READ MORE / View photos In July 2005, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) awarded a contract for the design of their new fast response fireboats to Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC following an internationally bid design competition. Since then, the design team has been working closely with the FDNY project team finalizing the functional requirements for the vessel, assessing alternatives, and developing the concept design. In March 2006, the project successfully completed a comprehensive Value Engineering process, during which a panel of independent marine and fire-fighting industry experts reviewed the proposed design and, in concert with the Robert Allan Ltd. and FDNY design teams, assessed the merits of a variety of suggested options. The design process is now moving full steam ahead to the detailed design stage, which will lead to an anticipated tender call for two new fireboats in the fall of 2008. The new fast response fireboats are designed to specifically address the fire-fighting and rescue needs of the greater New York harbour including responding to CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) incidents, and Hazmat decontamination. The pumping system is configured for marine fire incident response, and to support land-based firefighters with a 50,000 gpm total pumping capacity (at 150 psi) connected to a system of hoses capable of supplying water up to 5 miles inland

Well, as one of the guys on the other side, it's not that bad if you got the right person.. Hope you had a good time that night, and make sure if we are 1st due, keep the limo out of the way of the rig next time your in the city.

For us NYC people, MAST is no longer used and has been removed from the ambulances... We were pretty much giving the reason that there is no proof that MAST helped or didn't help.
-
We have them. Just a water can with some AFFF added into. FDNY calls for yo to bring it with you anytime you go into a basement fire, in case it's the oil burner.

As far as the date of Aug 1, this is for the completion of the installs. By Aug 1. All EMS units should have the AVL installed and online. Not sure if they are also adding for all the spares by this date or just the dedicated units. All Fire units should have the AVL installed. However the Fireside will not be online for sometime. They will be using the MDT's to link back to displays, The MDT link is not up and working yet and is still being designed.

They do deploy pretty fast, as you may have noticed in the video. However that was a pack that I am sure was used a lot. When issued the new packs, we have to use them at least once to test them, All the other training is done with packs that have been reused. The problem is with the new stuff the snaps and everything is very tight and stiff. It does take a bit to get it deployed and pulled out of the bag. I would rather have a kit that was used a few times.

I have had some good luck with office building doors using a slimjim. Some doors I have come across have a motion sensor on the top inside of the door which release when some walks up to the door. I have tried to get something to trip the door, but next time I come across one I will. If you can get access to the push to release button on the inside you might be able to get a slimjim in the crack around the door and push the button. So easy it's like cheating, and it's even better when done after truck gives up on the door first.

Our Rules are the following: You may drive with gear on, only if you have the leather style boots. YOU CAN NOT Drive with rubber boots. The movements are too restrictive and can be a safety hazard.

x901, I know you must be joking when you say the XTS-3500.. I have had nothing but problems with them..

If you would like some photos, I can take some of the system and a little bit of how it works. Not a bad system, but first day with it on and we had to hike it up in a hi-rise. Going to take some getting use too. Here is a video of the system in use for a promo video. http://en.petzl.com/petzl/frontoffice/Trav...o/exo_video.htm If you watch the video take a look when they show all the parts of the system.. You will see a U bolt over the rope. This was the change that was made. If you look at this page for the Grigri device you will see that the device is missing the U-bolt. Only thing with the U bolt is that you can open up system and remove the rope, but there is no need to do that anyway. http://en.petzl.com/petzl/SportProduits?Produit=203

Just started using one this week along with the new Rope system. Not sure how I like it yet, but I do like the system as a hole.

Yes, Tones on 33.960 but you will hear the audio over UHF. Pretty much everthing stays the same.. Only now it's UHF not lowband.
-
Ok, New repeater is now online.. I am no longer hearing them using 46.06 just the new UHF Repeater system..

As far as the Midtown issues with GPS, they have all that worked out. The new system is AVL not just GPS based. Once you tell the computer where the rig is, it can figure out the rest even without the GPS working. It has a connection to the rigs speed and a compass, so the computer will do the math and track when you make turns and how far you go. So even in dead spots it will still work, not a 100%, but you will have an idea. So driving under a elevated roadway the computer will use the speed to determine how far along you are. The are moving fast with the hardware installs. A buch of units in my Battalion already have the units, however they told us that they will be coming back in the future to update the MDT software.
