We haven't heard anything on why the new Rescue. The news said as a result of the new threats. Last time when we went to "Orange Alert" they sent around a entire plan on how to respond, extras units and all. However this time around haven't seen anything. They are working like a normal rescue, Manhattan is now covered by Rescue 6, 1 and 3.

Ok. Here is a new set of photos from my travels. Photo 1: Notes: Parked next to the fire building at a 2nd Alarm fire in the basement. Photo 2: Notes: Parked in front of the fire building at a small 10-75. First Due Engine and only engine on scene. So lets take a look and see what is wrong. I would like to discuss the SOP's the most departments have. These photos are not to second guess the units involved but to make us think and consider our options.

Ok here is my thing that I was looking at. Photo 1: Engine seemed to be parked in a good place. Not being hooked up to the hydrant, leaves the option to move the rig in a hurry. However the thing I noticed was that the Hydrant was never tested. If Murphy laws goes into effect and we need to start a line of this rig, I think we should know as soon as possible that this Hydrant is in good working order. Not saying we need to hook up, beacause maybe we want to move the rig closer to use a deck gun or move it out of a collapse zone, etc. Photo 2: Fire was small, however if you are starting line for a building fire then I think you should be at least checking that hydrant if not connecting to the hydrant. Once again Murphy laws truck opens up and finds more fire. Then hydrant turns out to be dead. Like said before there could be nothing wrong with the photos. Just wanted to make people think, look and evaluate. I know the Engine Company I am on, we check hydrants on almost all runs. This helps to test them so that next time when it is a fire we might find the bad hydrant before it's too late.

Also note that in the case of the FDNY EMT who was killed in and DWI MVA ,while responding to a reported shoting, the seat belt issue came up. The legal team for the defense argued that his client didn't kill the EMT but it was because he was not wearing the seat belt.

I don't have the report at home but I will try to see what I can remember. He had around 900psi left in the tank Try it one day. It was part of FDNY proby school to work with the Vibra Alarm on. During training we were not aloud to take off the mask until we were sucking nothing. 100% true. If you are trapped or trying to get out keep it on till it's all gone. FDNY teaches to take the entire mask off.. They teach not to remove the regulator. Why they do this I don't know. However they do teach that if you are not using your mask, you should take it off all together. This is the part the report focused on. No one will ever know how it came to be that he ended up with no mask on. When he still had air and a working mask. The one thing the report never addressed and I just thought of it now was his radio. It never mentioned if it was tested or in working order when found. Just a note for all Departments with a TIC and FAST team. Once the search for FF Brick began it wasn't long before he was found. A member of Rescue 3 using the TIC was able to locate him. It was brought to my attention that due to the high heat in the area his Bunker Gear and the debris around him began to have the same temps. This would make him not show up on the TIC. However the member using the TIC was trained to look for the Pressure Regulator on the side of the mask as this becomes cold and makes a big temp change. A new drill some of the chiefs are talking about is taking a mask turning it on and having members see what it looks like on the TIC.

One good thing FDNY does is send you into MASK course. During one of the stations as you move around a lot they shut down your tank.. They watch to see who will follow the correct steps and who will take off the mask. The other thing they do is make you do the course with your Vibra Alarm on, to show how much air you have to use to exit.

As you all know FDNY is the largest Fire Department and has yet to come up with a communications system that works. Just look at dispatching SI and the Bronx still share one freq. Some things to consider. The UHF firegrounds are limited to 2watts from a handheld radio. They shouldn't be used from a mobile radio. I think this is a FCC thing. FDNY just started to use 40 watt radios for fireground and reprogram portables upto 5 watts. Maybe some people could look into removing these limits.. As far as range goes, a system that might use a PacRat with the lowband and UHF linked might work well in cases of range problems. However I would say that the design should be of a mobile cross band repeater between two mobile radios. Not the old school PacRat's. Here is an example of how it could work. Large scale incident where you want to link to areas, "Command Staff" not FFs. Area 1 could be on Fireground 1 linked to 46.14 and then area 2 could be on Fireground 2 linked to 46.14. Chiefs in both areas now can talk to each either over a longer range. If you were to use this with all the FF's you would just double you communications trouble. With two mobile radios linked you could change the lowband and the UHF channels. Unlike the PacRat style which is set to only channel.

Super Pumper Unit will soon join the fire fighting force. Division of Safety was created On Jan 31 after 8 months the fireboat John Purroy Mitchel was placed back in service total cost of $100,000. Two WWII surplus steam powered electic generators were used to power the fire pumps. Parts were no longer availble for the refurb. New Apparatus: 1 Tower Ladder in July. First Ever!!! 2 Field Comms 28 Sedans 3 Station Wagons Will add some more to this later.

Photo by Jack Dewan Jr. Photo by unknown FDNY SOP's for Tower Ladder ops. 2.6 Escape From Basket 2.6.1 When no other solution is possible, member may escape from the basket by means of the fixed telescoping ladder mounted on top of the boom sections or by life saving rope in conjunction with the Personal Harness, which ever is most appropriate for the situation. Note: There exists under some conditions of partial elevation and extension, a possibility of boom section adjustment, gradual shifting with one section extending and another section retracting the same distance with no effect on the position of the basket. This results in rungs moving in relation to each other. Because of this possibility, utmost caution must be exercised while using the escape ladder.

FDNY maintains a "Protection unit" on the island. It's a limited crew staffing the firehouse and is part of Engine 4/Ladder 15. Not sure what equipment they are using. Last time I was out there Assigned to the firehouse: ALF Engine Brush Truck Rearmount TL Warehoused: In the event of an incident manpower would be brought over and staff these units. 2 Engines 2 Rearmount Ladders 1 Ambulances The Staten Island Firehouse is now open. However only staff by EMS at this time.. This was to be a Fire/EMS building.

Funny thing is that, as FDNY talks about the new CAD system, there is a good chance that FDNY could drop the Box system. The two things that would make the Box system a thing of the past is GPS and Geo Dispatching system. Currently every address in NYC is assigned to a Box. Each box has 5 alarms of units assigned to it. With the new system the computer could pick units based on GPS. As well there would be no limit on alarms.

The following Engines along with the Squads are trained for this. Engine 44 Engine 165 Engine 274 Also note that FDNY has been expanding the Haztac program with the goal of having 20 Ambulances trained for the RNC. 10ALS and 10 BLS.

The test for FDNY EMT and Paramedic is an E&E test. It's not a sit down and write test...

They have already begun taking people from the new test. It's something like 30 people have been hired off it. Just note that there are about 3 or 4 active lists currently. The Old and New FDNY list. There is also some Promo Lists active.

Don't forget Triage.... 50 people, 2 Emt's, someone has to get left alone.. Lets just think about another thing... FDNY FF's = CFR NYPD ESU = EMT Who has the responsibility for the patient????? I like when I pull to an MVA to find the FDNY EMS LT in the car holding C-Spine and the two Private EMT's standing there watching.. Lets also go a little further, maybe the EMT's could also tuck in their shirts... Maybe even get a blanket or something to cover the person being worked on so that they don't get showered in glass. How about you bring over the shortboard and placed it between the car and the patient so that the tool doesn't push anything sharp into the patient. Ok Lets look at an Engine Company at an Extrication, 4 FF unit. 1 FF would have the nozzel and stretch a hoseline for safety 2 FF Would assist the 1st FF 3 FF Working the Pumps 4 FF Patient Care I could find plenty of things to say about PD, FD, EMS, Etc. But is National TV the place to do it..

Not to bash anyone.. However I was at a recent fire and noticed something that I would like to discuss... Here is the Topic: Parking of Private Vehicles at Fire Scenes. This photo was taking standing next to one of the Engines across from the Fire Building.. Also not seen is this photo is another Vehicle on the other side of the Engine. I would like comments on the parking of private vehicles. At the fire that this photo was taken there was plenty of parking down the road from the fire building. Is there a need to have private vehicles in the immediate street of the fire buidling?? I can't help to think of countless incidents that the roads get blocked with vehicles and can't allow the needed units to access the incident.. Note that these vehicles didn't get in the away, this is just a discussion on parking of vehicles.

Which VHF freq are you talking about. I havn't noticed this on the Fire VHF? Did EVAC have a VHF?
