Also note that Bn 13 located in a Hospital Building will also be going. They were supposed to move to Engine 93 but that never happened. So they need two new stations, one which should be built in the Hospital and one for Bn13. Hosp growing, new EMS site a goner BY DAVID SALTONSTALL DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF The city is taking the wrecking ball to a state-of-the-art ambulance station built just four years ago in Harlem for $3.2 million - in the name of better health. City officials said yesterday that Emergency Medical Service Station 16 at 510 Lenox Ave. will be demolished next year to make way for a planned $225 million expansion of Harlem Hospital. Eventually, a bigger, better EMS station - at an extra cost to taxpayers of $4.2 million - will be built within the expanded Harlem Hospital campus. Health care advocates said rebuilding a perfectly good ambulance station was a tragic waste of scarce public health dollars. But city officials disagreed. "It's a good thing," said Kate McGrath, a spokeswoman for the city Health and Hospitals Corp., which runs Harlem Hospital. "We're responding to the present needs of the community." When then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani cut the ribbon on the 6,000-square-foot facility in 2000, he described it as on "the cutting edge of EMS station technology." But different mayors have different priorities. Giuliani, never a big fan of HHC hospitals, was eager to prove he could take over EMS services and improve ambulance response times. Mayor Bloomberg, by contrast, has worked hard to build up the city's public hospitals, and Giuliani's old ambulance station goes against his plans to expand Harlem Hospital by 150,000 square feet, officials said. FDNY officials stressed that although Battalion 16 would have to move to temporary quarters while its new facility was built, there would be no lapse in EMS service to the neighborhood. Just some notes on the New Compact Digital 8mp cameras vs the 6.3mp SLRS (Rebel and D70). Sensor. The 8mp cameras have smaller sensors then the SLRs. This will mean that there will be more noise in the photos. A SLR with a large sensor built smaller MP will produce a better photo. Viewfinder. The smaller cameras have EVF's instead of a glass one. When you press the shutter on a SLR the camera works like a normal SLR. With the EVF you can see the what the photo will look like before you press the shutter. The EVF will work slower the the SLR, also longer shutter lag, and blackout time. Makes them work slower then a SLR. Cost. The basic cost of the new 8mp cameras vs the SLRs are about the same for startup. How ever in the long run you will have higher costs with the SLR. On the good side with the SLR all the equipment carrys over to the new camera bodys. Also the 8mp are much more compact lighter and less to worrie about. Page 64 of Outdoor Photographer this month has a good right up on the new 8mp vs SLRs

Thats cool and all. Yonkers FD just set one up.. There are plenty of them around, however that don't still say "XXXX Light Beer" on them. The city could have just done a little more with this situation and know one would have a problem... O well what you going do..
-
One of the two real Collapse units are in Manhattan Hammer teams have nothing to do with the Ryder trucks.. FDNY Hazmat has a ton of trucks to use as Hammer teams.. It could be a few months till it is placed back in normal service. As far as the beer truck. havn't seen any fire departments that left all the beer logos on them..

It's another one.. I have counted 3 so far.. I think there might be a total around 4 of them.

When the group I was with was asked the question, this is what we all thought of.. So they should us another interesting way. Take you maul and hit the area where the trunk latch is. We tried this on several cars and from what we were told, 3 hits and it's open. Worked for us every time. The first car only took one hit.. If I can get some photos, I will point the area we were hitting. May not be best thing every time, but it did work with little effort.

Don't know what kind of SCBA SOP's are out there in Westchester Dept's. But the ones I have been trained in require to hold the mask with your left hand high on the strap. This will keep control of the low-pressure hose. If your tools where in your left pocket would make it very hard to get access to them.
-
Ok... Here is something to think about... What side do you have your things on? If you carry tools suchs as knife, cutters, shears for use if you get hung up, where do you keep them? Anyway here is my list. On coat- Gloves, Elevator Key, flashlight. Helmet- Flashlight, chocks Inside Coat- Lightstick - EMS Gloves outside pockets- 50' rope, 20' webbing, small flashlight, 4-1 screwdriver. Hose Strap, Spanner, window punch, shove tool, shears, leatherman. Fanny pack for EMS runs.

Just a note, don't have all the info yet, but here is what I have. FDNY has started training select Engine's in Decon ops. This is a special 3 day course. They are learning the basics of decon and how to don and doff CPC. They will be team with a SSL company. They will not carry and hazmat equipment, it will be placed on the 2nd pc, of the SSL. From what I understand this will be like a Decon/Hazmat taskforce. Bn, Engine, Ladder, Rapid Response Vehicle. Some units that are undergoing this training. Engines 22, 35, and 74. I am sure that they will be trying to train an Engine for every SSL. Haven't seen any orders or memos on this. Will keep you posted.

The HazTacs are used in many ways. 1. Medical Monitoring of members using CPC. 2. Patient treatment in the Hotzone. ie. Worker in full CPC falls off a ladder in breaks his leg. Haztac would be send in to treat on the spot. If the worker had a comprimise of his CPC then first Hazmat would remove, Decon and then treat. 3. Prior to all the new SSL, Decon Engines. Haztacs would do a lot of the Decon. Work the trailers are or decon station. This way they could monitor the patients being deconed and flag anyone who needs treatment. There is a entire SOP on the Haztac use. Also note that the number of Haztac units has gone from 10 to about 25 and still growing. I think they want to go to about 35 units.

What list are you talking about??? EMT/EMT-P > Civil Service EMT/EMT-P Civil Service > FF EMT > EMT-P

As far as the hose we use at my house, If they hose gets full of dirt we will remove and wash them. Most of what we deal with is hi-rise. So we keep about 3 sets of folded 2 1/2 hose. 1 one the rig and two spare, when we use the hose we rotate and put on a new set. Main reason is that we don't want to carry wet hose up 40 floors. The main problem we get with our hose is location we stored the spare stuff. Our Basement isn't in the best condition, a lot of dirt and water gets in.

FDNY Bn8 has being using a VHS camera to tape some drills.. They would send each company in to do a search drill and then at the end gave the tape to the officer to take back and go over.. Worked out good..

If you haven't noticed, NYC has installed a new lights near the Firebox's. In the past a small orange light on the hanging from a pole indicated the location of a Firebox. NYC has just recently installed a new LED looking light on top of the street lamps. Box #3432 Mace Ave and Eastchester Road. Box #3431 Waring and Fenton Ave. Box #4363 Mace Ave and Kingsland Ave Box #4375 Alerton ave and Gun Hill If you didn't notice the theme. It's "Aprils fools", no way to get help here. Try the next Firebox, look down the block and see that new fancy light. Tricked you again, no firebox here either. Lots of lights, but no way to get help.
-
No Plans on getting rid of the boxes. They did take a large amount of them out of service and remove them from streets. They were suppose to change some of them to a new style but havn't seen that yet. This is one of those DOT does one thing and FDNY does another.

That is all that being asked. The FDNY Shops can do some great work on rigs and has built some great stuff.. Take an extra day or two and just setup the rig. There is no reason the FDNY has to just throw something together like this. Not asking for new rig, just place a light bar, add a siren, and cover the ryder logo. On April 17, 1995, McVeigh rented a Ryder truck and then McVeigh and Nichols loaded the Ryder truck with approximately 5,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. On the morning of April 19th, McVeigh drove the Ryder truck to the Murrah Federal Building, lit the bomb's fuse, parked in front of the building, left the keys inside the truck and locked the door. On February 23, 1993, Salameh rented a yellow Ryder Ford Econoline cargo van. On February 26, 1993 At approximately 12: 18 p.m., the bomb in the Ryder van exploded, killing six people inside the World Trade Center Complex.

The union issue has nothing to due with the truck.. The issues are: No lights No Siren No Radio. Large Ryder truck markings. If they remove the ryder logos and throw on a light bar, put in a siren and add a old radio, I think this would make the union happy. The Department states that the truck will be escourted to the scene by the assigned unit. However, escourts are agaisnt FDNY Policy due to the dangers. All FDNY vehicles must remain a distance of 300'. This way when the Joe Q driver sees the first truck go past and cuts in he doesn't hit the second.

Rescue Collapse unit 2 has been moved to Ladder 25 in Manhattan. The rental went to Brooklyn and FDNY has ordered to new Collapse units. The problem the union has with the rental is that it went in service with no lights or anything and the ryder decals were left on. The first day they drove it to Brooklyn, PD stop it. We had this kind of problem after 9/11. When the city brought in new vehicles, they didn't paint or do anything to them. They put on magnets, well FBI didn't like that idea. Was a safety issue and made the department paste them on.
