The three new Ferrara Collapse units have been completed. From what I understand they will be assigned as follows. Collapse 1 @ Ladder 25 (Rescue 1's Collapse unit) Collapse 2 @ Ladder 132 (Rescue 2's Collapse unit) Collapse 4 @ ? (Rescue 4's Collapse unit) Rescue 3 will remain with tractor. Rescue 5 is a Hazmat Tech unit. So as of now no Collapse.

NYC REMSCO "MCIs are generally defined as five (5) or more patients with the potential need for extraordinary resources. However, the criteria for the definition of MCIs are not primarily dependent upon the number of patients."

Just wanted to put some basic tips out there for anyone using digital. You should treat the digital file that is copied of the camera as your negative. Never give this file out to anyone. Never delete it or make changes to it. Take the files and put them in some sort of order. I like to keep them in number order. Make 2 copies of it. I will keep a copy on the harddrive and then make one set on CD and one set one DVD. CD will hold about 200 photos. DVD will hold about 1200 photos. So lets say you want to make some changes to a photo. Crop it add a little color or something like that. Goto the master file and then copy it to another folder before making changes. This way you can always go back and have an original file to work from. Remember with Jpeg files every time you resave it you lose quality and if you rotate it in windows you also lose quality. So no mater what you do always try to keep a set of photos untouched just the way they came out of the camera.

Opps you got me there.. Was thinking 650mb for the older ones and 700mb is the new CD's.. For the users of the Digital Rebels (D300). I tend to backup 200 photos to a CD. I copy two entire folders such as "124CANON" and "125CANON" Then I will also backup about 14 folders to one DVD. I have this all setup in a CD Case, one of those that holds around 66 CD's. 10,000 photos stored on both CD and DVD. 7 DVD's and 52 CD's holding two copies of everything.

CD's hold about 750mb. So you then need to figure out the average file size of your photo. Things that will change the file size. Compressed vs uncompressed files. JPG files are compressed and take up less room. TIFF and RAW files are uncompressed files and take up much more space. Like said before some people like these because that give you more room to play with the photo. The RAW files are like negatives, the camera doesn't process the file, you will need to open it with something like photoshop and then make the photo. When using raw you set the White blance and everything after the fact. I almost never shoot in RAW unless I have a color balance problem. Megapixel size. When you buy a camera one of the main things you see is the Megapixel size. From things like 4 meg to 8meg and more. The large the size the larger the file. ISO Setting Most cameras set the ISO automatic but you can change this a lot of times. Lower ISO size like 100 will produce a smaller file size. An ISO of 1600 will produce a larger file size. You might notice that during the daytime you will get more photos on a memory card, lower ISO used and at night you get less photos due to the higher ISO.

To anyone taking photos. Make sure you are ready for lowlight. I have shot this parade a few times, and by the end of it, I am fighting with the lighting conditions.

To E-mail photos in Windows XP can be very easy depending on what you use for E-mail. They way I do this is with Outlook Express as my E-mail. Goto the folder that has the photo and right click on the photo and hit "send to" - "Mail Recipient" It then gives you the option to make it smaller. I go tend to go with the size 640x480 for E-mail and websites. If you don't use outlook you might still be able to do this. When the E-mail comes it with the attachments click on the attachements to open a preview and then resave them to a new spot. Of course you can do all this with any photo program.

This is an interesting question. First I don't know if you can defer. I do think that you can defer for College Credit. So with that being said, if that don't let you defer for no reason then say you don't have the credit. I will try to find out more on this... Second if you can stay in college and finish out this would be the best for you now and in your future. There would be no problem with you taking classes while a member of FDNY. Just as a Proby you might not have the time that you would if you had a few years.

If you havn't heard Nextel and Sprint are merger to form "Sprint Nextel" http://sprintnextel.mergerannouncement.com/

It all would depend on how it was done. To me if you can purchase things like CD changers and XM radios and spend 1.2mil on a rig. You might be able to find money for something that could be used toward firefighting and EMS.

Well most of the time that is the safety feature of the Starfire system. On the FDNY EMS MDT's when the bus gets on scene they can make it unfounded and leave. However SOP's states they must contact the dispatcher for more information and a call back. FDNY Fire took this to another step.. If the dispatch enters more information the MDT's won't take the false alarm. So if the first call states fire at 42/5 and then the second call states small fire on the roof of 400 5th av. Keeps the unit from leaving the scene.
-
Well that was not the normal roof FF. That photo was of Rescue 1 roof. Wouldn't put it past them to bring both.
-
When it comes to MDT's I don't look at on how many calls but how many units we have out there. When things are a little nuts and there are a lot of units on the road this is where the problem is.
-
Time for MDT's..... Get all this extra traffic off the area and on a computer....
-
If it's going to cost around $1300. Why not look at a laptop with GPS, Mount the laptop in the car.. I use my laptop with GPS in the car all the time and love it.
-
I say it's time for Westchester to at least have the ability for MDT's With the new radio system come some time in the future and all the radio traffic going on. HAving a computer that you could enter you are responding, in service, etc. Would cut down on some of the extra traffic.

The photo is from April 12, 2005.

This is true.. Funny thing is last year I saw an FDNY rig in a Westchester parade.

Going over this thread something came to mind. For the FF's that do keep gear in POV's do you take and sort of precautions to keep from possibly contaminating your POV. I know NYC sends out everyone's bunker gear twice a year to make sure it's clean. I know the unions where looking into some form of bag to carry gear from firehouse to firehouse when they get detailed. They were concerned with members placing gear in POVs and having a cross contamination issue. Most people might say that they decon gear when needed, but I would still say that just from day to day ops it does get pretty dirty.
