901 Missing the point.. EMS COORDINATORS not Incident commander or anything of that sort.. Look at the IMT Teams. NYC just sent one to help with wildfires. Do you think any of them told the FF's what to do? It's all about coordination. Things that a coordinator would do. The IC needs 4 more ambulances, he would be able to turn to the coordinator and tell him this. The coordinator then would get on the phone with 60 to get these units. How about what hospital to transport to? He could work with 60 to get ER status for you. This allows you to deal with the problem in front of you. It's not a case of you need to do this. It's what can I do for you. Hey you have the EMS trailer at the county would you like me to have it respond? All those kind of things. If you had Coordinators they would know what resources are available to you to assist with the incident. Like maybe calling for a county bus slipped you mind. This person might mention it to you as a resource that is available.

Let me add to this issue a bit.... Look around the county and you see all the FD's getting all this Hazmat stuff, the squad bus things and decon trailers. I know it's all there just in case. But what about EMS.. How about some EMS trailers like the one at the airport. Place them around the county wouldn't be a bad idea. How about some MERV style unit that could be brought to a scene and staffed by a local hospital. To treat and release pt's that don't need to goto the hospital. Saving on overcrowding during an MCI. Also like said above maybe it's time for some EMS coordinators on staff that respond to help coordinate.

MERV = Major Emergency Response Vehicle. I had the reponse policy the other day but can't seem to find it. They use to go on 3rd's and above now I think it's 2nd's and above as well as some other jobs like plan crash's and 10-60's. There should be three in service now. MERV 1 and MERV 4 with new rigs. Heard MERV 3 on the radio today, so I guess it's also in service with either the old MERV 1 or the old bus. MRTU = Mobile Respitory Therapy Unit. Pretty much a bus with O2 points at every seat. Some notes: I wouldn't call a MERV a MCI unit and for a few reasons. They don't carry mass equipment like backboards, and other needed equipment. Doesn't carry support equipment like tent's, tarps, and lighting equipment. Pretty much they get used to check out FF's at the fires by the FDNY doc's to see who needs to goto the hopsital or not. Also we have the LSUs = Logistcal Support Unit. There is one in each boro, they are more of a MCI unit. Carry bluck backboards, gloves and other supplies. However they are also missing the support equipment such as tents, lighting equipment and things like that.

Haztac Ambulances ALS and BLS Two Haztac ALS Ambulance that are also USAR Two Haztac Supervisor's LT's MERVs MRTU Gators and Cushman units LSUs There use to be a EMS ERS unit. This was the Emergency Response Squad. Also there was SOD units prior to the meger.

Some things to do: 1. Make sure you have XP Sp2 installed. It has a built in popup blocker for IE. "Tools, Popup Blocker" 2: Download and install microsoft beta antispyware. 3. Also I would download and install Lavasoft's adaware. 4. Goto add/remove programs and take out all that junk like the cash back stuff. 5. You can also goto Msconfig and deselect the startup options to help you getting running somewhat better. You can also re-select anything that you might need if you realize later.

You are not going to find a portable radio to do all that. You might find something to do Vhf and UHF but no the lowband stuff. As well most of the dual band radios out there are not of the greatest quality tend to be more of a ham radio thing..

The main thing the Satelitte is used for is the LDH for a water supply, they carry about 2500' and the Manifold. They will drop the LDH from the Manifold to the Pumper which is 2000gpm, note the Satelitte does not have a pump. The Manifold will be setup in front of the building to supply all the handlines.

Battalion is the Battalion chief that over sees several firehouses in an area of the city. Division oversee several Battalions. Just a ranking thing. Cars look the same, carry most of the same things. Division also has the command board for setting up a command post. Maxi Water is an old name, Satellite is the newer name. They are the same thing.

I have some more to come.. Stay tuned. I had posted them but made an error will repost tomorrow..

There was a story like this last year sometime.. Some idiot parked his car in a no parking zone behind the firehouse. There was from what I understand two cars on either side of his car that were dropped off for training. So they cut all three. Opps maybe but I think the idiot learned his lesson.

I say he was thinking..... "I was just trying to make some toast" Bunker gear and mask used during an attempt to control the raging toaster. However he couldn't pull the pin on the extinguisher and bailed out the front door running for his car..

HELP team goes around to the hospital and makes sure the guys are getting cared for. They will bring them back from the hospital to the firehouse and things like that. There are two units one from Bellevue Hospital and the other I am not sure.

I was able to get some roof top shots from a building on the corner 7sty. So it made for some good photos. Also made it to the Mn 2nd today and Bronx 3rd. Got there late, but photos are on the site.

Could be wrong but pretty sure it was Sat 1. Look at the location. Sat 2 would be coming across town not up 12av. Where as Engine 9 could come up the west side from Canal. They never made it to the scene so I didn't get a chance to see who it was.
-
Sat 1 covers Manhattan they come out of Canal st with Engine 9. They were assigned on the 2nd Alarm in Manhattan. Sat 2 had the 3rd in the Bronx at 6am.
-
The Satelite units are pretty much a big hose wagon with some toys. The Engine is assigned a 2000gpm pumper that goes along when it responds. They also have special stuff form Foam Ops. One of the big things they do is bring the large manifold. Engine 9 / Sat 1 Engine 72 / Sat 2 Engine 284 / Sat 3 Engine 324 / Sat 4 Engine 159 / Sat 5 Engine 207 / Sat 6 They respond on all 2nd Alarms and above as well they do have some 1st alarm boxes such as Riverdale.

Not sure of the setup in the News room these days. But when I had set them up going back a few years. They had two roof antennas feeding two BC9000. I know when they moved the news room they did setup one digital scanner. Not sure if the second antenna was moved over. They also had a news beeper.

billo647, If you can record the tones you want, I can point you to a program that will decode them and tell you the HZ. Unless someone of course has the info already.

Ok. Here are some things I use to do with my Point and Shoot Digital cam. One problem you will find is that there is a delay when shooting, which can lead to all sort of problems. Learn you camera and read the book. Things to learn are how to change the ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Etc. So lets say I am shooting a parade, and I am having some trouble. I would change my ISO as needed setting it to something like 400 instead of AUTO. Another trick I would do is set the focus ahead of time. Some cameras have a setting called infinite focus. This isn't the best option but when having trouble focusing might help you get a decent photo. One thing I found by setting everything and not using the AUTO modes was the camera would react faster because it doesn't have to think as much. Getting dark photos when using your flash? Try two things: 1. turn off you flash and use a tripod. 2. Change to a night mode and use a tripod

Lets remember one big thing here with the NYPD/FDNY Hazmat issue. FDNY will allways have a key role in Hazmat, that will never change. Yes it's true the NYPD will be the IC at Hazmat jobs. However FDNY is in charge of Decon and Life Safety. Life Safety is #1 and nothing can come in the way of that. Now lets look at Fire Operations. At a Fire what is the #1 life saving tool?????? A Properly placed hose line. So when we look at Hazmat if in order to accomplish Life safety means we need to stop a leak, plug a hole, etc we are going to do that. Makes no sense to work on patients if we can limit the amount of patients.

While we are on the MCI Issue. Two things come to mind. Triage, next time you have an MVA or something with a bunch of patients MCI or not. Use triage tages, will help you to learn and will help the ER to learn. 2nd. What system is being used for Triage. I teach "Start RPM" as I have come to call it. It's the START system, but we check for Pulse absent/present.

This isn't that odd.. FDNY EMS will also deploy plans like this. Some Examples. During the blackout, we stopped responding to Segment 8 calls. These are calls for Minior Injury, Burns, Sick, EDP's and a few others. They also had people that would call back to see what calls we could not respond to.. EDP's is a big one because there is a lot of these each day. So NYPD would have to handle on there own. On there side. During the Blizzard, the Ambulance availablity went down because units had trouble moving patients over the snow. They changed response so that all EMS/Fire Response both units would have to continue in. Unlike now when EMS gets there first FD Leaves.
