Not to take this thread in yet another direction... but I am curious about the "pagers not picking up the trunked system" comment... Are there departments in Westchester that have replaced and/or upgraded all of their pagers to be able to receive their assigned trunked Fire channel? Do the Minitors even support that?

Amtrak splits off just south of New Ro, heads out into the Pelham Bay area, then follows E. Tremont and the Bruckner, crosses The Rock (Randall's Island) to the Hell Gate Bridge- where is crosses into Queens, loops around to the Southwest through the Sunnyside Yards and then travels under the East River just South of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and runs into Penn Station.

Your apathy scares me. I hope it doesn't reflect the future of the fire service, and I hope your attitude is adjusted before you become a full-fledged Firefighter. Try to LEARN from this discussion. Do as you are taught, not necessarilly as others do. Stick to your training and stay up-to-date on current safety standards. As you get older, you will find that every department, every team, every organization, every group of every kind has good eggs and bad eggs. Some egg-heads are just lucky they don't crack their shells.

Ok I was going to stay out of this... but since I am often the voice of reason when it comes to the ridiculous "Career vs. Volunteer" issue, I will once again ask "What on earth has this got to do with the ridiculous 'Career vs. Volunteer' issue??" This issue has two main factors: 1) Safety. Clear-cut, plain and simple. 2) Responsibility. If this video was posted by a member, he/she should have thought twice before making it a public spectacle.

I dunno if this is the case at 60-Control, but I know other instances where you have Emergency Services personnel in the same Union as "regular" civil servants, and the majority of people in the Union do not understand the issues involved and why the Emergency Services workers deserve better pay, better differential percentages, better vacation time, etc. I know our previous Shop Steward up here at Stamford 911 dedicated a LOT of his time over several years to getting us to where we are now. Stop me if this info doesn't belong on this forum-- but is there a similar situation at 60-Control, as far as other Union members not really understanding whats going on at KED-281?

Lucky-Truckie, I agree that "turk" is spot-on, but since you called me and told me to "go check out EMTBRavo", I feel a need to post also You rang, Joe? Ok here's the deal... "turk182", "Lucky-Truckie" and "beavis" are correct. AT THE CURRENT MOMENT, Ladder 26 is a "spare rig" because there are no firematically qualified volunteer drivers. What I mean by that is that we do have one member who is authorized and experienced to DRIVE and train DRIVERS on the truck, due to his job as a Senior Mechanic with the City, his rank of ex-Captain, and his previous experience driving ex-L26. However we currently have zero volunteer members who are FULLY qualified to drive and operate it (i.e. run the aerial device). In the future, an ideal plan would be to have L26 added to the run cards on certain alarms, and also to have it available for stand-bys for neighboring towns. There are multiple factors that have greatly slowed down efforts to make these ideas become reality. Multiple people and entities are at fault for the fact that we are WAY behind in driver training. Seeing as I am the Truck Officer for the rig in question (as 2nd LT of the Ladder Company) I often feel helpless, but I keep TRYING to get things to happen. However, I am not going to use this post to get into the multi-faceted issues that are involved. Also, this is NOT a Paid/Volunteer issue in any way, shape or form. The City of Rye owns two ladder trucks, one is currently first due, and one is currently in reserve status with plans already on paper to train volunteer members as drivers with the end goal of the above-mentioned responses. Several of the career staff have been very helpful to me and have continued to provide guidance and wisdom pertaining to the issues we are discussing here. My associate "turk" puts it very well: I will continue to bust my hump and bust various other people's stones until we get qualified. I, however, am just one man. Seth, you point out staffing issues... Just like many other combination departments in the area, we have volunteer staffing problems. We have an entire committee and a good chunk of money devoted to a campaign to attract more volunteers and also to help us retain them. Third-party research has indicated that one way to retain members is to make sure they feel involved, even when call volume is low... this was one of many reasons for Rye maintaining a second Ladder Truck-- so that we can take people out and train on driving, aerial operation, ground ladder techniques, cutting roofs, etc. without taking our first-due Truck out of service or delaying its response. Anyhow I am at work right now, so I should get back to the floor. I will try to check on this topic again later, but I don't imagine there is much else to say since every active EMTBravo member from the Rye FD who typically posts about these topics has already spoken their mind. But if you have any pressing questions for me until 2300 hours, you can always call 9-1-1 Oh, and as far as... ... Several fire insurance companies have already asked me not to ever leave town again (For those of you not familiar, seemingly every time I go on vacation, there is a working fire.)

Look at it from our angle as Emergency Responders... Think of the nastiest, filthiest, bug-ridden person you have dealt with... I bet they have stayed in a hotel at some point in their life! Some of these rooms might have 365 different people sleeping in them every year... do you trust their hygiene paired with the level of cleaning done by under-paid staff? Personally I choose to sleep in my clothes on top of the comforter, and put a t-shirt over the pillow!

If I was to look at the fact that both turk182 and myself are from Rye, and that the only Pierce that Rye has is Engine 191, then I would say it was. But officially I have no comment.

My guess would be that whatever department that is had a bunch of the red 5" fail hose testing and didn't have any more of the red hose in stock so they took yellow hose off of their ancient, useless "reserve" pumper. Just a guess.

Has anyone else seen the Funeral Home escort vehicles with purple lightbars mounted on the roof? I have seen one at Coxe and Graziano in Mamaroneck... I hope they are not trying to replace having a police escort. Also, it used to be that if you saw a line of cars with their headlights on during the day, it was probably a funeral procession... but now so many cars have daytime running lamps that you can't tell the difference.

Been playing guitar and electric bass for about 13 years. Was in a couple of punk-rock bands, mostly for fun, in high school and college. Also play a bit of mandolin and have a couple of tin whistles (I enjoy Irish folk tunes). Recently have been working on my harmonica skills, but I respect my upstairs neighbors so I keep it to a minimum. Would love to be in a band again, but my work schedule makes that kinda tough. I play everything from the Grateful Dead to the Dead Kennedys. Edit: I'm pretty handy on a drumkit, too... although I take half an hour to adjust everything for my 80" wingspan

World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. That being said, while we remember those who we know or have known who have been affected by HIV/AIDS, we as Emergency Responders must also remember that we often put ourselves at increased risk of a contracting a variety of diseases for which there are still no cures. Always wear your PPE! An ultra-thin layer of latex could save your life.
