  1. Because of football? Or because we never leave the door open when you come to stand by?
  2. Best Wishes for a full and speedy recovery from everyone at Stamford Emergency Communications, Squad A
  3. D'oh! I used to work at an Ace Hardware store, and it was rumored that a life-sized cardboard John Madden at another store had been shot by a security guard after hours.

  5. I thought the address was different... but it was a fire in the boiler room, didn't get beyond "Working Fire" as far as units to the scene... Meanwhile I must once again give a shoutout to Frank's www.stamfordfirepix.com for some great shots from the Fireside Restaurant fire. (Scroll down to "11-21-08 947 Hope St")

  7. Thanks again Frank! Keep that camera clicking!
  8. True- but it is sort of refreshing that for once we are talking about someone wearing TOO MUCH protective gear!
  9. I was about to ask a silly question... but first I decided to hold a nickel up to the big magnet on the speaker in my guitar amp... so to answer my own question: No, a big magnet would not have worked.

  11. Well now you know what to get any office-worker-type people for XMas... a lead apron.
  12. Rest easy, Dennis. My condolences to his family (including his co-workers at Bronx Comm.)
  13. The photo you gave us was from the 1986 100th Anniversary parade and showed the 1929 Seagrave (not pictured above) and the 1955 Maxim after the 1985 Spartan tractor refurb. Thanks again!
  14. ...if the height isn't quite right you can also clamp vise-grips onto the track, or of course twist the track with a halligan but that just adds to the damage... also it only takes a second to un-plug the motor once the door is in the open position! that way you don't have to worry if the little computer in the motor goes haywire from heat.
  15. I'm troubled by you using 9/11 as part of your argument, boss. But I can't say I disagree with you or the SFRD on the overall issue! I am just hoping I'm not the one who answers the phone next time Susie Q. Taxpayer asks "Why aren't they here?" I am not a fan of under-trained people hiding the truth and defending their under-manned systems and then deflecting blame onto those who try to save their a$$es time and time again. I would have to bite my tongue to just tell her "They are en route" rather than tell her the blatant truth! Edit: Yes I realize that for a homeowner watching their house burn up, 4-5 minutes seems like eternity. I was speaking towards the larger issue of manpower when I quoted "Why aren't they here?"
  16. The CITGO sign has been there since 1965. The oil company tried to dismantle it in 1983 but a grassroots group of Boston citizens saved it. Unfortunately some people see it as representing Hugo Chavez, but he was only 11 years old when it was first installed. For many current and former Boston residents (myself included) it served as a beacon for finding your way around the city. For the first two years I lived there it provided a neon glow outside my window, not to mention a ridiculous amount of RF interference! Glad this Boston landmark survived the fire! Go Yanks! (Yes, I am a walking contradiction.) Edit: Also, the CITGO sign is on top of the BU Barnes and Noble building, not actually on Fenway Park. Ever since they built the Green Monster seats you don't see it on TV as much.
  17. That's about $450 a month in WoW subscriptions is what that is. Hi, my name is 242steve and I am recovering World of Warcraft addict... My account has been inactive since 6/18/08.
  18. Seems like Trumbull has handled an unusual amount of extrication jobs lately!
  19. Not anymore... see "Update on Stamford Merger" thread for info on Long Ridge and Mutual Aid.
  20. From ScanCT... I spoke with one SFRD officer that was on scene and "substantial fire" sounds like an appropriate description.
  21. Figured with all this serious talk about the election, economy, etc. we could all use a laugh! http://www.theargylesweater.com/ check out today's comic (10/6/08)
  22. It's already been announced on BNN!

  24. I had a Squirrel-related call yesterday! Me: "911, where is the emergency?" Guy: "Ummm, Liberty Street and... and... HEY WHAT STREET IS THIS? ...Stillwater. Liberty St and Stillwater." Me: "Liberty Street at Stillwater Avenue, ok, what is the problem there" Guy: "Well, there's a baby squirrel." Me: "...and?" Guy: "And... well, he ain't got no momma!" Through clenched teeth I made sure there was no further ACTUAL emergency and gave him the phone number for animal control.
