Who better to report on an incident than someone who was actually there? These are not opinion pieces, and I for one try to keep commentary to a minimum, if not zero. Its great when someone is tuned in to a scanner, but quite frankly I get tired of reading posts like this: 1200: City of Anywhere dispatched to Reported Structure Fire 1202: Everyone is en route 1205: Chief reports working fire 1400: All units 10-8. Especially with the onset of fireground radios that most people without a ridiculously expensive scanner cannot monitor, its a lot more interesting to read about what actually went on at the scene, rather than what someone heard while sitting in their bedroom.

Date: 6/13/05 Time: 2130 hrs Location: 37 Beverly Drive, cross of Parkway Drive Frequency: 46.260, 155.625 (PD) Units Operating: 2421, 2422, 2423, E191, E192, L25, RyePD Description Of Incident: Fire in garage wall/electrical panel area Writer: 242steve, 25truck26 Just before 2130 hours, the RyePD dispatcher called patrol cars to the above address. Caller in the house reported smoke in the residence. PD dispatcher had advised the caller to vacate the structure. At 2131 hours, 60-Control toned out City of Rye to reported Structure Fire. E192 arrived first due, followed by L25. E191 stood by the hydrant about 4 houses down the street (towards Crescent Ave) Arriving units found the garage door open, with heavy smoke showing. Some smoke visible through second floor windows. As a 1-3/4" crosslay was being pulled off E192, the area at the top of the main electrical panel burst into flame. Visible fire was knocked down with dry powder extinguisher. The garage was vented using a PPV fan, which quickly dispersed a majority of the smoke. Crews checked the second floor and attic for extension, and came up negative. The chiefs, truck company and E192 stood by for ConEd to arrive to cut power. At 2218 hours, Ladder 25 advised 60-Control that, as per Car 2421, Engine 191 would be going 10-8 at that time. ConEd cut the power to the house, and all Rye units were back in service by 2230 hours. June the 13th was a very busy day for the Rye FD, starting at about 0200 hours there were about 8 calls evenly spaced throughout the day. (May not be a lot of calls for some depts, but is for Rye.)

E193 and L26 are reserve rigs, so this will be an "unmanned" situation.

Although you wouldn't know it- since we've had like no alarms in June. In fact we are on track to have about 100 fewer alarms this year than in 2004. A superstitious person would be wondering about that... Of course there's none of those in the fire service... :roll:

In Rye we keep our gear at home or in the car since we respond direct to the scene, not to the firehouse. There are a few spare sets of gear on the rigs for people who are already out and about when an alarm comes in and don't have their stuff with them. Of course the spare stuff does me no good, since I'm 6'8" and have a size 16 boot. Needless to say I am within a 100-foot radius of my gear at most times...

Our responding apparatus are encouraged to repeat the address that they are responding too, and I think that this is essential. Many volunteers are busy doing various things throughout the day and may miss the initial tone-out. I am a contractor, and if the table saw is running when my pager goes off, and then I shut the saw off and hear "Ladder 25 is 10-17", I tend to say to myself "10-17 to where? Lets be reasonable folks, I want you to do a quick exercise right now. Get a stopwatch, and time yourself saying the following phrases... 1) Tower Ladder X is Responding. 2) Tower Ladder X is responding to 123 Main Street. I think I have beaten this horse enough for now...

One night someone was trying to raise the Cab company on 46.26, and saying "This is a fire dept. frequency, get off the air!" It hasn't been as bad in the last couple of weeks, but still someone should be on the case (FCC...)

Rye/Port Chester/Rye Brook VAC is dispatched by any of the three PD's. (Rye, PC and Rye Brook PD's share the same frequency, 155.625) If county gets an EMS call for Rye or PC, then they land-line the appropriate PD for response. Likewise for Rye Brook but they also send Rye Brook FD to EMS calls for some reason.

Rye Ladder 25 is Pre-Piped, manually pinnable in rescue or water tower positions.

FYI- City of Rye FD is switching to County Dispatch starting (theoretically) June 1. As has been discussed, we've been "turning over" the phones to 60 for every full assignment alarm for the last few years, so it makes sense to finally switch. Are we the last of the self-dispatchers?

Date: 5/25/05 Time: Approx 2000 Location: Intersection of I-287E and I-95N, Just South of Grace Church Street Frequency: 46.26 Units Operating: 2421, E192, U39, 2391/2/3, R40, RPCRBVAC, NYSP, PCPD, Stat-Flight Air One, Hannigan's Towing Description Of Incident: Single Vehicle MVA into trees w/Pin Writer: 242steve City of Rye dispatched to MVA w/ injuries. Rye's Rescue-Engine (E191), along with a large number of the active volunteers from Rye, were at the County Training Center. E192 (with Hurst tools and portable generator) and U39 (Lights and traffic control) responded. Upon arrival at scene, 2421 found Police and EMS already tending to One Male occupant in a 4-door sedan resting on all 4 tires, with heavy entrapment from a crushed roof in the front driver's section of the car. The chief requested Port Chester's Rescue 40 for additional tools. Stat-Flight Air One was put on Stand-by. Multiple tools were put into operation to achieve the extrication of the patient, who was put on a back-board and then transferred into a stokes basket due to a steep descent to the waiting ambulance from the tree-covered area where the car had come to rest. Stat-flight was not needed. Members of R-40 used the TI Camera to sweep the area for a possible second occupant, and came up negative on the search.

Patrol cars were in pursuit of the youths, who were on foot, when Car 58 radioed for FD and EMS response for Car 53, stating that they would need the Jaws of Life. Car 58 asked for FD and EMS to expedite. 60-Control toned out Port Chester E58, E60, R40 for a Police Vehicle Rollover, and while en route the officer was removed from the vehicle. PCPD requested one unit each from Rye and Rye Brook to assist with crowd control. 2255: EMS transporting two patients to WMC, being escorted by Car 54. 2259: PC Detective requesting County PD Accident Unit 2301: PCPD Midnight Shift coming in early, Car 58 requesting a unit to transport a witness to HQ. Rye Brook sending Car 47 to transport the party. 2313: 2391 releasing E60, holding E58 and R40. 2338: PCFD units going 10-8.

Two Hawthorne ambulances requested to scene. 1724: Valhalla's Rescue can proceed 10-20 1725: 63B1 transporting one ALS to WMC

Date: 3/23/05 Time: approx 2230 Location: 6 Walker Avenue, cross of Glen Oaks Drive Frequency: 46.260 Units Operating: 2421, 2422, 2423, 2424, E191, E192, L25, County Car 5, Harrison FD (1&1) Description Of Incident: Working fire in attic of 2-1/2 story private dwelling. Writer: 242steve, 25truck26, E64PCFD2044, 648eng119 City of Rye dispatched to Reported Structure Fire. Engine 191 arrived first due and reported smoke showing. Ladder 25 advised flames showing, recommended to transmit a 10-75. 2421 called 60-control to tone out a Working Fire and later requested Harrison Engine to stand-by at Rye Station 2 and Harrison Ladder to stand-by in their quarters. E192 layed in from the hydrant at Walker and Glen Oaks with Two 3" lines that were then connected to intakes on E191, which operated One 1-3/4" line into the structure, and One 1-3/4" line up the aerial of L25. The roof teams provided vertical ventilation to aid the hose team in the attic in knocking down the fire. This was achieved by two teams, one operating off the aerial of L25 and one reaching the roof by ground and roof ladders. All units were 10-8 by 0045, and members worked until 0200 at Station 2 repacking hose on E192. Another good save (second one in less than a week) by Rye FF's, and in terrible weather conditions.

Date: 3/18/05 Time: approx 1230 hrs Location: Lane Way, Cross of Barlow Lane Frequency: 46.260 Units Operating: Rye: 2422, 2424, E191, E192, L25, U39. PC: 2393, E61 Standby: PC E62, Harrison TL24 Description Of Incident: Stove fire extended into wall and ceiling spaces. Writer:242steve City of Rye dispatched to an Automatic Fire alarm in a 3-story dwelling on Lane Way. The structure is approx 1500' from the nearest hydrant. Upon arrival, 2422 and E192 extinguished visible stove fire with chemical extinguisher. It quickly became apparent that the fire had extended into the wall and ceiling spaces, and heavy smoke starting showing on all floors. E192 pulled in front of the house, L25 (which is a rearmount) backed in behind E192 in case he had to ladder the roof with the aerial, and E191 wrapped the hydrant and layed in with his entire bed (over 1000') of 5" LDH. 2 lengths of 3" hose relayed from 191 to 192, which operated 2 1-3/4" preconnects into the structure during the course of the job. Meanwhile, U39 tended to the hydrant and diverted traffic. 2422 requested one engine to the scene for manpower, and one engine/one ladder to stand-by for other alarms in Rye. E61 Port Chester along with Car 2393 responded to the scene with manpower, while E62 (PC) and TL24 (Harrison) stood by. Rye and PC firefighters made a good save, pulling ceilings and venting windows to ultimately bring the pesky fire under control. All units were 10-8 by approx 1500 hrs.
