  1. Rye uses the municipal pumps at the city garage. Each piece of apparatus has its own fuel key that goes into a specific slot "F1, F2, etc." so the city can keep track of usage. Let me tell you it is a fun time snaking Ladder 26 (tiller rig) in and out of the pumps when its winter and you have to drive through a maze of plows!
  2. and what do they do with the old tiller rigs?
  3. He was on during the day today.
  4. Ok I know you guys/girls spend 12+ hours couped up in that bunker together but this is getting weird... (I shouldn't talk since I'm on the list to potentially be couped up in that bunker... In case people hadn't guessed that from my other posts) :-P

  6. Rye Fire Boat 3 has a fixed pump. I have no idea what the spec's are, but I will investigate.
  7. On a lighter note, I have often wondered if certain Comm. Operators bring this "number saying" into their everyday lives... Example: Cashier: "Your total is $18.67, sir." Comm. Op: "Very Good... 636 at 1620 hours."
  8. In x635's post about the complicated car fire in Bedford Hills (7/7/05), he mentioned some unique problems due to the car's construction. I know that some of the new top-line Mercedes' have double-pane glass for sound deadening, climate control, etc. When I took the AVET course at the WCFTC there happened to be one of these cars on the pad. One thing to note that might throw you off for a second when you are on the scene is that if you are using a spring-punch or even a pike or halligan to break a window, you actually have to bust through two different pieces of glass. Not that this is the biggest deal in the world, just something to look out for. Another thing that I have encountered at a few recent car fires is the increased presence of Magnesium. Most memorably the Magnesium was found in a new GM Pickup and a new Ford Explorer. So basically I am starting this thread so we can all share our knowledge of strange and/or potentially dangerous things that we have encountered in Vehicle fires.
  9. Battery Placement: Chrysler PT Cruiser. Battery is accesible by removing the front right tire.
  10. I passed by PC Station 3 earlier this evening and there was a mini-bus (like the small Bee-Line type) parked in front with PCFD markings... What is this vehicle's use and designation?
  11. I would hope that every engine carries at least one Class D extinguisher.

  15. Many random ideas pass through my head on any given day. Here's one from today... Anybody want to meet up in the apparatus parking area after the 6/29 Mamaroneck Parade for a group photo of website members? Thought it might be a good opportunity to put faces to the usernames... Seeing as I will be with Ladder 26 (Rye tiller rig), that is my suggestion for a place to meet... As far as when to meet, whoever is furthest back in the parade should post and let us all know what time will be good. Option 2: Take individual photos and piece them together into a digital collage of website members. This might work better as far as timing. PS- No arguing about threads allowed at this photo-op!
  16. I'd like to see an Aerialscope do 75 MPH! I'd also like to see some responsible journalism in NY! Best wishes to our injured comrades...
  17. Anyone have a list of who won what last night?

  19. Regarding 1191's statement, I know there are a lot of "Rescue" companies that used to be Fire Police companies, so therefore they deal with traffic, crowds, etc. The county doesn't officially recognize Fire Police/Patrol units any more, so to my knowledge all of the old Patrol apparatus have either become Rescues or Utilities, depending on what equipment they have...
  20. If you are at any of the Sound Shore beaches it is great because you can also see the fireworks on the North Shore of Long Island.
  21. If you have a Thermal Imaging Camera, a "Lightning Strike" is a perfect time to use it. Aside from seeing whether or not something's cooking, it is also great PR because homeowners (a.k.a. Taxpayers) are usually impressed and/or fascinated by the TIC.
  22. 60-Control and the Westchester County Police both hire from the Westchester County Human Resources Civil Service Exam "Communications Operator Trainee" The test was last given in October 2004, and a list was established on January 21, 2005. So far the Westchester County Police have utilized this list, but as of right now 60-Control has not canvassed the list. The current list is good for up to 4 years, according to the Dept. of HR As of September 2004, the pay scale listed on the county website was as follows: $32,345 Starting Salary $39,410 Maximum reached in four additional steps The Exam Announcement for the most recent test can be found here: http://www.westchestergov.com/csexam/exann...exams/68903.htm PS- You have until July 8 to file for Stamford's "Public Safety Dispatcher" Exam. 23. My first digital camera, which was out-dated anyway, met with an unfortunate demise in Red Rock Canyon outside of Vegas. (Note: Don't drop your camera off a rock ledge.) So I recently purchased an HP R507 Digital Camera. It's 4.1 Megapixels, 21x total zoom w/ digital zoom feature. Overall it has some great features and comes with some good software (I like the panorama maker feature.) I bought this at Costco. With a docking station, 2 rechargeable batteries and 32MB internal memory (also has an SD flash slot) it was $200. So far I have not been disappointed. Hope that helps...
  24. I'm guessing thats why they started this class: http://www.westchestergov.com/emergserv/bu.../05-40HSFER.pdf
