Tuesday, September 27 around 1530 to 1545 hours The "Alert" tone (Single Blast, not the Siren-sounding thing) keeps going off on 46.060 What's the deal?
-
Hmm... had this scanner since about 1993... No PL here Any suggestions for a scanner that will be worth investing in, keeping in mind the new "radio plan"?
-
They must have been testing something in Pelham, because 629 eventually did a 5x5 check with Rescue 45. I was just curious cuz the alert went off an abnormal number of times. Sorry for the basically pointless thread...

Guys- If they are going to film an important/emotional moment- they could have waited until the PASS alarm testing or whatever was finished... I realize that it is a "reality" show- but give me a break, it is not ALL filmed on-the-go, there are a lot of set-up scenes. I still stand by my statement that it is totally careless of a Lieutenant to go on TV and say "you basically try to stand upwind..." after the narrator has just told the audience that car fires pose the dangers of explosion and poisonous gasses. Remember- a lot of people watching the show have no working knowledge of firefighting. Its called the Discovery Channel... lets hope that people aren't "discovering" that some of this country's bravest are taking un-necessary risks. The Boston guys not wearing their masks at a car fire will continue to irritate me just as much as Paulie, Vinny and Rick welding with the "close-your-eyes" method on American Chopper. If Discovery Channel is all about teaching and informing... they should try to teach by example.

When I worked in professional scenery shops and theaters (one shop was actually on Huntington Avenue in Boston, 3 blocks from E37/L26) it was mandatory that we be PROVIDED with safety glasses, ear protection, respirators, fall arrest equipment, etc. Whether or not we WORE the proper protection was technically up to the individual employee. We did have a boss/supervisor, and I suppose that they would be the first person to be questioned by OSHA in the event of an accident Now, in the case of a Fire Department or other uniformed service, you have officers (such as a Lieutenant) who are clearly in charge of the men/women on their crew. I do not mean to diminish the dangers of sparking grinders and loud table saws... but clearly there are much more serious dangers related to firefighting, and in the case of "Firehouse USA: Boston" it is pretty ridiculous that they have a Lieutenant telling the camera that in a car fire you should just "stay upwind" of the nasty smoke. To have a reality check for a moment- we all know that this sort of thing happens. For those of you that are officers- I hope you use your influence and authority to make sure that everyone wears proper PPE/SCBA. As a firefighter, I think Discovery Channel and the BFD were careless in airing that segment. But I'm sure that the director of the show loved it because it shows the guys from E37/L26 as smoke-eating super-heroes. ...no doubt in my mind that they are heroes- but I'd like to see them retire with healthy lungs. ...and it was kind of silly that while they are having an emotional scene with that young man from Canada there were PASS alarms going off in the garage!

New York State is way behind on anti-fraud technology, so I'm not surprised that they are finally starting to catch up! I am sensing a decline in the sale of chalk in SUNY towns...

I was a Junior in college at Boston U at the time. At 8:46 on a Tuesday morning I was still asleep, as was my room-mate. My father was watching TV while having breakfast at his usual spot back home, and my mother was at work. It did not take long for her to call me, because all she said was "Turn on your TV right now" and I did do that, just in time to see Flight 175 hit the South Tower. I immediately woke up my room-mate, and we sat there for hours in disbelief. Meanwhile, my window looked out onto Storrow Drive, which is a highway that leads to Boston Logan Airport. A steady stream of black Suburbans and Crown Vic's went speeding down the road all morning. When we finally left the room to get some food, the city was silent. I remember later that night, needing to get away from the TV for awhile, walking up and down the campus and there was not a sound in the city. We must remember. I bet your parents and/or grandparents remember where they were when JFK was killed, so I hope that we can all remember where we were when thousands of lives were extinguished.

There's a cleaning product called "Flitz" that works very well on diamond plate. If you have a soft, washable buffing wheel that you can put in a cordless drill, it speeds up the process. But like "Daday" said- you better set aside a whole day because once you get a few square inches all shined up you will not want to stop.

I recently went to the Gilded Otter, which is a restaurant and Micro-brewery located in New Paltz, NY. Their Pale Ale was excellent and I was told that the "hard" Cider offering was good as well. The food was also VERY good- they make a Meatloaf that combines Beef, Pork, Veal and Chorizo Sausage... extremely tasty!

Rye has a 1929 Seagrave Tractor-Drawn Spring-Action Aerial at the museum. This was the original "Ladder 25" which was replaced in 1955 with a Maxim TDA, the trailer of which we still have today on Ladder 26.

Rye will be doing it again tomorrow (Sunday, 9/4) on Purchase Street around Noon until ??

Greetings all- If anyone knows someone looking for a room in the Boston area starting on September 1, please let me know... This would be One room in a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment with free parking. This is in Allston, near all the bars and public transportation. Other 3 roomates are all female students at Boston University. Cat friendly, too! My friends who live there are gonna be in $$ trouble if they can't find a fourth roomie. Contact me with serious inquiries, and I will put you in touch with the right people.

Yes, a hydrant bag is for this same purpose, usually made of a heavy-duty vinyl or canvas material (not unlike a large rope bag). In Rye, Engine 191 has the hydrant bag tethered to the end of the 5" hose. That way, if you wrap the hydrant and the engine takes off down the street, there is no chance of your tools suddenly being 1200-feet down the road from you! What is Elmsford's "hydrant box" constructed of? Can it easily be grabbed without much effort?

So among the random thoughts that passed through my head while driving between Abingdon, VA and Rye today... What departments still give out "Tot Finder" window decals? And does anyone have any stories of where you actually located a child because of the decal? I know me and my brother had them on our windows when we were kids (well actually they were there until we got replacement windows about 2 years ago... )

Date: 8/19/05 Time: around 1500 hours Location: Purchase Street under the Metro North Bridge Frequency: 46.260 Units Operating: Car 2423, Engine 191, Rye PD, MTA PD ESU, United Wrecking, Aquarion Water Co. Description Of Incident: Over-turned truck Writer: 242steve City of Rye Engine 191 dispatched to report of over-turned truck under the Purchase Street train bridge. (This bridge has a posted height of 10'-10".) En route, 60-control advised that as per PD, truck had propane tanks on board. What we found at the scene was quite interesting. There was a roll-off truck carrying a 15yd dumpster. Inside the dumpster was a forklift. This whole ensemble was resting on the passenger side on the sidewalk heading north towards Harrison/Rye Brook. The forklift's LP cylinder had been thrown clear of the truck. Also, the truck had sheared a fire hydrant off the sidewalk (no water leakage occurred). No injuries to the driver or anyone else, no propane leakage (significant dent in the protective collar around the LP tank's valve). Aquarion removed the hydrant from the scene. United removed and righted the forklift first, which was removed from the scene on a flatbed. They were then able to right the entire roll-off truck with the container on board. E191 stretched a 1-3/4" line while United was working due to large amounts of metal-on-metal and metal-on-concrete scraping and unknown fluid conditions under the truck. Traffic all around Rye's commercial district was heavily affected. Photos are being submitted after I post this.

8/8/05: 156 White Plains residents have qualified for the agility test. Non-residents will not be taking the agility test at this time and it is "highly unlikely" that non-residents will ever be called upon from the June 2004 test. Good luck to you WP natives on the physical!
