  1. Hahaha, I guess my sarcasm was not as obvious as it should have been. We have very few hydrants in our district, but the majority are dry hydrants, those PVC pipes that go into static, or kinetic water sources. Pressurized hydrants are few and far between up here in the boonies.
  2. We got something called Dry Hydrants in our town. Lots of them. What is this regular Hydrant you speak of?
  3. Yes, this apparatus was in Firehouse magazine in the January 2005 issue, page 92, under the "Road Warriors - Fire Departments Showcase the Newest Units in Their Apparatus Fleets" section.
  4. I do like traditional White over Red, although our newest piece of apparatus runs the Chicago Black over Red, and I absolutely love how it looks! This is the only apparatus in our fleet with these colors, and I will say, I wouldnt be opposed to seeing more like it.
  5. East Fishkill FD 39-81 contains 5000' of 5" LDH, but it is in a normal lay in the hosebed, no reel in the back.
  6. Union Vale Fire District up here in Dutchess has a truck with a reel for dispensing LDH. Inserted is a picture of their truck outfitted with a hose reel. I will post the stats of how much LDH this carries, and numeric of the truck when I find it out.
  7. Although not Westchester County, up here in Dutchess County, Arlington FD's Rescue is ex-FDNY Rescue 2

  9. Unfortunately, have never dealt with anything other than Hurst. Our Hurst tools have served us well so long as we have had them, but I would never be opposed to trying out other brands.
  10. Probably just going to end up being played up more than we will actually get, as usual.
  11. Well, as far as the Fresh Air Fund part, http://www.freshair.org It is a non-for profit organization that takes underpriveliged kids out of NYC for a few weeks each summer and gives them time out in the "Fresh Air" There are a few different ways they do this. One is homestays. where a family can host a single, or a few kids for a couple weeks. Another way is camps at the Fresh Air Fund's Sharpe Reservation, a 2300 acre site in Fishkill, Dutchess County, with 5 camps on the reservation, where depending on the camp, kids can stay for a few weeks and do all kinds of awesome things. I work at Sharpe Reservation during the summer. As for the barn with the sign, not quite sure what it is, but it must be affiliated with my job somehow!
  12. Stupid people = job security
  13. Any specific requirements like residency?
  14. Congrats man! Sounds like an awesome job. Hope for lots of pics in the future!!
  15. Hey there fellow guys and gals in the emergency services field. I am working on a research project entitled "The History of Fire Extinguishers." I have been having trouble finding much information on this topic, minus the basic descriptions on the early soda-acid extinguishers. That information is great at all, just do not have much information on the progression and development of them over the years. Any recommended sites to visit that I may not have discovered? Thanks for any and all help!!
  16. Sadly, Q2Bs are a dying breed in my district. We only have 2 left. One is on our Tower, the other on one of the engines from another house. Our new engines come with, I believe the EQ2B, but nothing will ever compare to the real deal!!!
  17. You make a very good point Rich, I think it is a wonderful thing to see more and more properly trained, and maintained FAST's around. The next hurdle is to use them more often. Unfortunately, in a few recent conversations with members from neighboring FDs, some have pointed out to me their lack of using FAST's. In a pinch, an interior qualified crew standing by, acting as a FAST in theory works, but in my mind, nothing compares to having a working, trained, appropriately designated crew standing by, especially these days, when getting sufficient manpower from your own department to run the actual operations can be an issue. You are completely right yourself too ALS. Within the past month, for the structural collapse my department had (11-2-05), as well as the most recent structure fire we had (11-23-05), which ended up being and exterior operation, but in both cases, we called Village of Fishkill with their FAST, and had them proceed to the scenes. You can never know, or plan out exactly when things can, or will go wrong. Worst case scenario, if you determine that you will not need them, you can always cancel an incoming crew, but it would be a tragedy if one was not there, or even worse, had not even been called for, and the metaphorical sh*t hits the fan.
  18. Thanks a lot Joeyfire! I had seen the big deck gun in some of the pics, and assumed that played some role in its job function, just really didn't know any of the specifics, as many rigs have deck guns. Thanks for the info though, definitely gives me much more knowledge than I had a hour ago! Thanks again for tolerating my ignorance :-P
  19. Hey there guys. Totally know nothing about FDNY's wide array of fire apparatus (minus obvious ones...Squads, Ladders/Tower Ladders, Pumpers, Rescues etc...) Please fill me in what the Satellite vehicle does. I have seen pics of a few of their Satellites with no real knowings of its operation(s)/function(s). Thanks for any and all info!!!
  20. To drive any apparatus in my district, chief's car, or any district vehicle, you must be 21 years of age. I have heard that a neighboring department to mine is 18 for a flycar and brush truck, 21 for engines, and 23 for tankers. This is unverified, but I did get the info from a reliable source.
  21. Dutchess Community College is now in its 3rd semester of the new Fire Science program being offered by the college. So far, it seems to be going strong with lots of interest. The college offers a 2 year A.A.S. Degree for Fire Protection Technology, as well as a 2 year A.S. in Fire and Occupational Safety, with the option for a transfer on to a 4-year college.
  22. Is it really a 2 year list? On the letter I got, it says it is only a one year list.
  23. Just got my letter in the mail today, ranked #49. Isn't the best, isn't the worst. Does anyone think I even have a chance at that rank?
  24. I first found this flash file on Ebaum's World about a year, year and a half ago. Also on that site, there are many other flash files, as well as videos (funny, extreme, sports, etc) games, jokes and pictures. I highly recommend you ALL go to Ebaum's World if you have never been there before!!
  25. Me neither WAS, can anyone help, or possibly d/l it and then send it on request? From discussion, it sounds like really great video, and I would love to see it.
