"EMTBravo.com - Linking Emergency Service Providers (and buffs) Worldwide"
-
Although it may be a haul for some people, I will always promote Dutchess Community College's Fire Science Program. DCC has the lowest tuition in NYS, if cost is the major factor. Balancing that out with the cost of commuting......well, I wouldn't know that cost, just another thing to consider. Although you may already have heard of many different colleges who offer a Fire Science program from others already, here is the link to the thread where some were mentioned. http://emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=8693 I am biased, being as I am already in the DCC Fire and Occupational Safety program, but I think that it is a wonderful program! Feel free to check out the links provided in the aforementiond thread, there are some links to different schools providing information about those degree programs! Whether you choose to take these courses sooner than later, or once you get on the job, is all up to you, but it can't hurt looking into it now, and planning for both possibilities! Best of luck on it though!

Dutchess County Firefighter Exam, June 3rd, 2006. http://emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=8920

I think it is a great idea. Especially helpful when you post something, and then have to wait for a mod to delete it, if you mistakenly posted, or in the wrong section. Hopefully it all does work out!! Like you did say tho, EMTBravo, hopefully it does not lead to excessive, inapporpriate usage!! Thank you for giving us all the benefit of the doubt.

Having completed ICS 200 this past semester in school, I am more than pleased in seeing ICS, and NIMS (or NIIMS, whichever you prefer) being used more and more makes me happy! I am proud to be one of the upcomings in the fire field, having such a wealth of knowledge at the beginning of my career. I hope that this all is a growing trend, especially here in the Northeast.

I received a Canon Powershot A520 for Christmas, and could not be happier! I am still experimenting with all of its features, but for a minimal price, I have a 4 Megapixel camera, and have been complimented by several people in the photo field as to the results it has produced. Unfortunately, I only have a 4x optical zoom, and wouldn't mind something a bit more, but still, not a bad camera at all!

Thanks for the info Truck6018. I knew I was somewhat right along those lines. The ad in the Poughkeepsie Journal the other week was for the contract security firm that works for IBM. My understanding is that IBM only staffs/staffed 3 guys on a shift, and to comply with CFR 1910.134, they need 4 guys for the "2 in, 2 out". So, this company hired a security guard with the proper qualifications who, if and when a fire call goes out, runs over and acts as the 4th guy.
-
From my understanding, Pleasant Valley also has a few staffed guys. Also, if I am wrong about this, someone please correct me. IBM is a private Fire Brigade. As far as I know, they do not hire off of a Civil Service list, they have their own separate application and hiring process. What is the deal with Castle Point. Are they a Federal FD? If so I doubt they would hire off of a county list. And what about Greenhaven. I am not sure if they are a fire brigade as well, excluding them from a county civil service list. City of Beacon, Arlington, Fairview, and LaGrange are all combination districts or departments. City of Poughkeepsie is a fully career department, although I have heard a rumor that there is still (1) volunteer with them, if anyone can clarify this for me.

I am currently enrolled in the FPT, transfer Fire Science course at Dutchess Comm. College, and I absolutely love the course. The instructor is a retired career firefighter from up here, as well as a NYS OFPC instructor. The courses, material, presentations, stories and experiences are good, and relevant. This is somewhat of a fledgling course at DCC, seeing as it is only in its 4th semester of existance, so not all of the bugs are worked out, but it is still a great course, and gets better each day it goes on. I highly recommend it to anyone close enough, or willing to travel a little for it. DCC offers the lowest tuition in NYS, and there are a great bunch of people up here (not knocking anyone else, so please do not that it that way). If anyone would like any more info about the program I am in, please feel free to PM me, I would be more than happy to elaborate!!!!

At LEAST the main attack engines from each company have Knox Boxes, the vast majority, if not all engines, do have them, as our fleet is being upgraded. The district chief has a personal Knox Box key, not attached to an activation box. Also, our ambulances do not have Knox Box keys in them.

Just finished talking with a friend from UVFD St. 1, he said that he is unsure of the exact year of 67-81, but he thinks it is from the '80s, although from the pic, I think it looks more like early '90s. He will get back to me when he checks it out the next time he stops down there and checks it out.

As a youngster (in comparison to the experience and knowledge in here) I am glad to have a forum to exchange ideas, knowledge, and experiences. I am proud to be a member of this board, and advertise it to everyone I know who might be interested in it. Seth, great job so far, and hopefully many more to come! Hope everyone out there had a great and safe New Years, and lets hope this whole entire year is the best one each of us has had yet, including on here!!!!!! -xfirefighter484x

Rombout recently ordered a new Sutphen SPH100 Tower Ladder to replace the old 62-45. Delivery is expected in April 2006. For more information and updates on their new order, visit Romout Fire Company (Dutchess Co.)

In my station, our attack engine, 39-11, and our hose truck, 39-81 both have Little Giants. I know that in our Station 3, their Utility, 39-63 has one as well. There are several more floating around my district, although I am not sure on exactly which apparatus they are on. They are most certainly a versatile ladder system, and I love being able to use them at times and places most other ladders cannot be employed!

Wendys, Wendys, Wendys, Wendys, oh, and if no Wendys around, I suppose McDonalds. I have been known to drive more than a half-hour just to get my fix of Wendys.
