  1. Booo! By putting this out, it increases the possibility of others signing up!! Hehe, I was hoping no one else would know, so I would have a better chance to get hired off this list, since I didn't the last time round.
  2. While I agree with you dodffdog, that is one thing. An arsonist firefighter, only due to the fact of his position, I feel is worse. Ok, a crack dealing chief, yea, that is not good, it is pretty bad, definitely. Someone who is in a position to save lives, and put OUT fires, now accused of going and setting them? I think that is extremely hypocritical!!
  3. I know that some companies claim the "assumption of risk doctrine", which allows them to basically pansy out, and say "you are doing dangerous work, you will.may get hurt, and you accept that fact", but I mean come on! So long as this gentleman was not doing anything stupid or negligent which led to him getting whacked, I do not see why he does not get coverage. (Flashbacks to my Legal Aspects in the Fire Service class this last semester ). Guess its time to revise that insurance policy a little bit. And maybe break a few kneecaps
  4. The public DOES have a right to know what is going on in their community, but do you like only hearing bad news? I agree with you wholeheartedly, BFD2553, but I also have to say, that I wish there was more positive news being published out there. As Porsha911GT3 has said: we see that the "good stuff" rarely ever makes it out.
  5. The point of magnetic doors (at least in the cases I am thinking of) are plainly for security, like local banks. I am sure the fire protection may play a part, but normally, it is a security issue. One trick-of-the-trade that was taught to me to open these doors is through the use of either a hydra-ram, or rabbit tool. If the door has a D-handle, and you are able to stick some sort of straight object, i.e. a strong screwdriver, or small pipe, something to that effect, then placing your hydraulic tool with the front facing the other door (if a double door) or the door jamb, and the back of the tool against the object placed in the door handle, by opening the hydraulic tool, you are forcing the object wedged in the door handle, to pull the magnetically sealed door backwards, and break that seal. I will search for a schematic, or a better description, but I hope I have kind of explained it somewhat well!
  6. Such negative news is a slap in the face to the public service community as a whole, not just for us here in Dutchess, while it does happen to take place here. As some have said, no news is good news, and there are times it seems that is all we hear about, it is a shame there is not more of a focus on all the good aspects. Fire prevention days, public education, CPR training, helping old Mrs. Smith get back into her chair because she can't help herself anymore, it is our job and mission for the public good. It is a shame that all the negatives are pointed out, and not all the good. In BFIRs, or other national reports, the recorded $$ loss is/has to be reported, but nowhere is there a report of the actual $$ saved due to the efforts. The papers do not report the CPR being done on the way to the hospital, all the effort exerted, just to set Mr. or Mrs. Smith at ease, that all is being done for their husband or wife of 50 years, even though we all know the truth. I guess what I am trying to say is, this is a black-eye on the whole emergency services field to have things like this floating around, and I hope for the sake of this individual, that department, this county, and the entire public service sector, that it is not true and the whole situation is resolved.
  7. Ok...sounds nice...but still doesn't help me pay for my gas goin' back and forth to school
  8. I absolutely refuse to see this movie. Yes, I am sure it shows the heroic struggle of the passengers on this flight, and promotes a sense of pride, but it also gives the terrorists what they want, in a sense. You see, now the terrorists got their media coverage (yes, on top of everything else). Also, someone somewhere will be making money off of this deal. Whether or not anything goes to the families, or any memorial funds, I do not believe it is appropriate to make such a movie yet. Give it 10, 15 years before this subject should be made into a motion picture. Like everyone is entitled to....this is just my two cents.

  10. Basically same car, right? Isn't it just that one is a hatchback, and the other isn't?
  11. So for something like that, you would need a Class K extinguisher/extinguishing agent, would you not? The possibility for deep seated fire could exist, or is that not the case. If so, would a standard ABC, foam, or other Class B extinguishing agent be appropriate?
  12. Awesome video. Should have spent more time fighting the fire than taping (j/p), lol. Definitely some great action video though.

  14. Gotta love those Kodak moments. I suppose we have to appear to the general public like we are making an attempt, but c'mon, reality, who is going to put that out before EVERYTHING in that building is gone, or the building is on the ground. I love the Sky Protectors they put in place (I am allowed to make fun, I run on a tower, lol). Not criticizing anyones actions, just pointing out some observations. I would have done the same thing they did in that situation. Can anyone say mutual aid??? Who's bringin the lawn chairs, and would someone get those cops over here, we need some coffee and donuts!
  15. So Porsha...how long before you trade your current one in for this?
  16. Gives me some great confidence in our government. Can't even definitively know the status of the aircraft without having to check. I think it is hilarious though!!!!!

  18. It almost sounds like a bad batch. I am no expert, by any means, but the whole fleet with the apparent same problem? I just took the Scott Air Pack, 2.2 & 4.5 Maintenance course up at the Academy earlier this month, and I haven't heard TOO many problems with Scotts (everyone has their problems here and there), but that seems just a bit odd to me. The Energizers in our Scotts last a good bunch of months, at the least 6, if not up to a full year (also depends on their frequency of use). As for the Vibr-Alerts, either prematurely going off (sounds like a personal problem j/p), or not going off at all, that just seems a bit odd. Hopefully you have at least contacted your vendor, or local service rep and discussed it with them.

  20. I think that too many people only see FASTeams as needed at a structural fire, and during interior operations. As OSHA states, the 2-in 2-out policy must be there during operating in an IDLH. Brush fires are not to be taken lightly, just like any other fire emergency, the metaphorical brown stuff can hit the rotating blades at any time (yea, ok, the sh*t can hit the fan). I personally do not see it as beign a bad idea. Brush fires can be very taxing on individuals, and exhaustion is a very real possibility. Just my two cents.
