  1. Quick question. I am pretty sure I know what reverse loading is. Is that when, persay, you rest an aerial on some surface and pressure is applied. In other words, pressure is forced UP on the aerial device instead of the downward weight of humans, tool, etc?
  2. Are there any other specific requirements for a California CPAT, or is ANY CPAT valid? I know when I went to interview for Danbury, they said that you need a Connecticut CPAT. Does each state have their own individual requirements for CPATs, or what is the deal with that?
  3. Wow. I bet that officer is counting his lucky stars.
  4. http://www.fdmh.org/products.htm In looking through their site, I could not find a corresponding rig with the front end looking like the one in the picture here. The had listed 3 "Rescue" vehicles, yet only had a picture of one up on the site.
  5. Didn't they phase booster lines outta the fire service for structural firefighting?
  6. Thats right! You still owe me a photo hunt up here in Dutchess! Take your time though, but I won't forget!!!!
  7. Balloon Frame Fire back in Fall 2002 in East Fishkill (my first structure fire).
  8. Can anyone say.......hearing damage? I really do hope that was a joke for a photo op. There had to be a logical reason for appropriation of funds, and this just seems outrageous.
  9. I had heard that DeWitt was retiring, but I did not know he already had! I wish the best of luck to Mr. Murphy, and bid a farewell to Mr. Sagendorph. Happy retirement!
  10. Wow. I wonder how the person in the car that got caught inbetween the tractor trailer and the cruiser made out?
  11. Listen guys, I really wanted to stay out of this conversation, not much of a place for me to come in and comment, but I really hate to see guys inside this board turning on each other. Capt. Munt, there are many good FF who are younger than you, you can NOT make a rash broad generalization about them. Just because someone may not have a TON of years in the fire service, does not mean that they do not know what they are doing. You may or may not want to work with guys younger than you, but you were there too at one point (whether in the fire service or not), and these people at least have the heart to want to try and help. When it was first enacted, I posted my feelings about posting ages in profiles for everyone to see, and this is one of the drawbacks. Listen, for the most part, we are all here to share ideas and support each other, lets try to NOT be putting anyone down, especially based on a silly little thing like age. I really am sorry for bringing this issue up here in this thread, but guys, c'mon, just discuss the topic at hand, and stop bashing each other about their own ages. -xfirefighter484x
  12. I couldn't even watch it in one straight shot. I had to stop about halfway through and come back to it, I think I almost busted a gut!
  13. D'OH!!!
  14. Thanks for the clarification!!
  15. NY only has one USAR team? It was my understanding that there are 2 USAR teams for NYS. New York Task Force 1 (NYTF-1) is composed of members from the New York City emergency services personnel. Task Force 2 (NYTF-2) is comprised of the remainder of the state, volunteers and career staff who have the training, and volunteer for the response as the USAR team. I actually met some members of NYTF-2 while observing the NYS Rescue Challenge up in Utica this past fall. Present were collapse teams from Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Yonkers, US Marine Corps, and, the New York State Task Force 2.
  16. Wow, one helluva rip roarin' fire. The video seemed to go on forever, but its amazing that was all captured in only about 5 minutes. It sure took off about halfway through.
  17. Stewart ARFF is operated by the USAF ANG, covering both aspects of FAA (civilian) and Military regulations. They also provide all structural firefighting (first due) coverage for the air base, and have multiple agencies on mutual aid assignments, including Vails Gate, Goodwill, and Newburgh FD (many others, too many for me to know, or remember). Stewart is also in the process of upgrading to a larger, newer facility to house their fire apparatus.
  18. I knew you needed it prior to hiring, was just curious whether or not you would be passed up for an interview if you didn't have the CPAT already.
  19. Thought the list was only good for one year from what I had heard. Even if you were on the list, do you need to have your CT CPAT already, or once you get called, you can go and take it? I had ranked decently on the Danbury Exam (not extraordinary though), at #49.

Anyone with any additional info, please post in the Incident Workshop thread, or PM me and I will add it in. ***UPDATE*** Reports are now standing at 5 victims of this fire.
  21. While in theory a good idea, a first line defense to possibly knock down an incident before allowing it to progress into a larger one, it has inherent its drawbacks. By having the means for a civilian to try and fight a fire themselves, it is putting those civilians at an increased risk to get themselves into a sticky situation. While it seems easy enough to us (put the wet stuff on the red stuff), you must keep in mind that our gear and respirators allow us to nearly negate those minor conditions. A simple 200-300 degree room to us in gear is still violent enough, and capable of producing enough smoke to incapacitate or kill civilians. With a hose in hand, there is the possibility for civilians to feel more invincible then normal, and stay fighting a losing battle longer than they should. In almost every single case recently, I have noticed all Class II standpipes to have their hoses removed, most likely due to, as was previously stated, them falling into disrepair, lack of maintenance/inspections. It is a progressive move, in my opinion.
  22. With my gf recently visiting down in Seminole County FLA, it sparked my interest to think about the fire/EMS protection is offered down by where she is staying. Doing a little research, I found that through their county site, the E911 center puts out a list of incidents ongoing, or dispatched, and what assignment(s) there are. It is not an in detail listing, and it automatically refreshes every 2 minutes. After a while, it clears and previous incidents listed. I just thought it was a cool idea to see the county listing online the incidents their staff is going out on. Maybe something we can see around here some day! http://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/dps/e911/e...?anchor=log#log
  23. Ooooh, my gf is down in that area this week. Just took a boat tour of Winter Park about 3 hours ago. Wish I had known about that, I woulda told her to have one for me
  24. I had been wanting to get that phone, only for the lack of having enough money to expend for such a nice one. Although I did have the fortune to acquire a nice i870 for a very nice price, I would much prefer the durability of the i580 (I previously had an i850 before the i870, the not-quite-as-durable version of the i580). The i850 lacked the Bluetooth, and a lower quality camera-phone (although that may change as the quality of cameras in phones improve).
  25. I have seen a few of them around up here in Dutchess. The ones I have seen are strobing LED strips now, with the effectiveness and reliability of them being proven. One that I have seen is up on Creek Road in Poughkeepsie, at the cross-walk for Dutchess Community College (just south of the Dut. Co. Fire Training center for those of you who know it), and another one seen on Noxon Road, at the intersection of Robinson Lane, and the Noxon Road Elementary. It was my understanding that it does catch ones eye, while not a complete distraction, it is just enough to get you to look up, and see that the light is indeed RED.
