huh? I think you're asking why not put a pump on every truck. Cost is a very adequate excuse. The cost of the pump training and maintenance of it. If you have good water supplies and plenty of engines responding then spend that extra money on new equipment, a tic in every rig, radios for every member, PSS devices for every member, the list goes on. There is a finite amount of money available. Then there is space considerations. A pump takes up a lot of space on a truck and I have yet to meet a truckie who had extra space on his rig with nothing he wanted to put in there.

According to people in the know here's whats going to happen. Monty is not particularly interested in running EMS (hence the transcare contract). When the Monty - Transcare contract comes up again OLM EMS will be added to Transcare's contract. Then there's those who say The lower level management at OLM is staying and so is EMS (apparently OLM EMS actually turns a profit still). Then there's as part of assuming OLM's debt Monty has to trim some fat from their operations as well and all EMS is going to be dropped at the conclusion of the contract. It turns out apparently no one knows whats going on. There are rumors about added FDNY units to cover voluntary units that will no longer be operating but there's nothing concrete. Besides, most of that focuses of Presbyterian and St. Barnabas units.

I just got off work a few hours ago and didn't hear anything about this. Any info on the officer's condition or when it happened?

What he said... That and in light of these challenges many agencies have responded by just putting more pressure upon their members to step up instead of trying to change to attract new members or seek outside help. One agency that I was a member of turned me into an officer less than a year after joining. Then when I was trying to make a career out of EMS they laid down the gauntlet and asked me to re-evaluate my priorities because my time in the EMS academy was interfering with my volley time. The other volunteer organization I'm a member of wished me luck and is still tolerating my brutal schedule. It use to be there was a glut of people who wanted to do right by their neighbors and had the time to give. Today those people are few and far between. So now you have to reach out to people who aren't so motivated to serve their community, but have the time to do it. We have always received some form of compensation for our time, whether it be camaraderie, parade season, Christmas parties, etc. Now the trick is finding out what it'll take to get the next wave of people in. I don't know what the magic bullet is, but the attitiude that I do it for nothing more, so why don't they has got to go.

I don't believe ruck was saying you can not support the war. I think he was trying to say you can be opposed to the war and still support the troops.

More than 10 minutes after discovery and More than 5 minutes after the first responding apperatus got on scene and the best they could do was an 1 3/4 for about 3 minutes. Thats f-ing embarrassing. Apparently they run with the 10x the height of the building collapse zone.

NYC has no legislation requiring the issuance of bail out ropes. The department did issue a new system after Black Sunday thanks to the persistence of people like ff Cool and the ff's that designed the system. Even if NYC had tougher legislation its still no reason to exempt them. NYC's higher standard would have stood inspite of the Albany legislation.

Too bad these taxes would be passed on to the consumer. These are not taxes on the oil companies profits. I'm not even sure if its possible to go after the oil companies profits. If you want to get into subsidies and and other gifts the govt gives to the oil industry thats another issue, but this tax would come straight out of our pockets.

Got some more info on Aviation at work today. They ceased operation as a VFD in 2002. At this time they are on NYC Parks Dept property (100 year lease for $1) with a hand poured crooked foundation that the membership put together. The original plan to have a contractor come in and put up a shed type structure on the foundation had to be scrapped as the foundation was deemed unsuitable. There is zero to show for all the money they received. This guy is toast.

ckroll, great post. Thanks for the simple breakdown. Several European auto-makers have used laminated glass in their cars over the past few years. It sucks for us. On the upside since they're not glued around all 4 sides like windshields they are easier to take out, it just requires a little more violence. Be careful.

In your town if you are not authorized to issue violations then contact the building dept. Who ever is in charge of construction permits, CofO's, etc would be able to set up some kind of standard reporting procedure.

Come on now, be real. No one is swinging the axe like a madman to take out a window. I think the cutter and jaws are a lot scarier than someone removing the window with an axe.

Here's to hoping Supervisor Delafield success with a municipal EMS system. Maybe Dutchess can show everyone how its done.

Recently got a chance to put our Hurst up against a Holmatro and TNT (I think). The Hurst spanked them. All though, I have to admit for ease of use I'd rather Pleasantville had Holmatro. I just think for the small amount of extrication we do and the inconsistent manpower Holmatro would be a better choice.

You want an unbiased look at who can who can't drive, spend an afternoon at your local car wash. I spent a few months in college at one for an evolutionary biology paper and had to chart everyone's performance. Long story short, you'd be surprised at how hard it is for many people to get their tire lined up in that track. Hands down elderly had the hardest time, followed by people on cell phones. Women were consistently worse than men across all groups and teens and through middle age men were nearly perfect. It all comes down to perception and hand eye coordination.

I don't know exactly what they did or how any of the volley co actually operate, but I know avaiation has been completely OOS for at least 2 years now.

There's not much left of Aviation. He's chief more or less because he's the one around that wants it. Hopefully the truth about this money comes out and he gets whats coming to him. Sadly I think aviation is as good as dead.

figured I raise this one from the dead....a friend of mine is trying to find what numbers MV has hired up to. Anyone know where I can send him? Calling apparently hasn't worked.

I've gotta agree with partyrock. If you can get the fly car out, why not just get a bus staffed. You can really set an interesting precedent in Westchester with that kind of service.
-
I've never heard of a vac having that SOP, but I have heard plenty of members comment that they were early or that they could take their time because we were all ready in the bus when the call came in.

Oswego, isn't that an overly complicated system. 30 seconds isn't enough time for anyone to get anywhere especially in Mt. Pleasant during the day. I'm not one to play around and mosey on over an alarm, but even at that just to get across pleasantville is a 2 to 4 minute trip in your POV. Now you've got multiple people responding and its still taking too long. Also, the medic rides EVERY call in Mt. Pleasant. Three maybe 4 BLS and a medic would be fully capable of handling Mt. Pleasant and no one has been able to give me a single reasonable reason as to why this can't happen. We can put prehospital care back in the nads of the EMT's. As it is, by the time the bus gets there its just get the paperwork and transport the patient. The medic handles patient care. As a result the EMT's skills suffer. In my year with pvac I handled maybe 5 calls without ALS. The volunteers do an excellent job and the truth of the matter is pvac is held together by a small core of dedicated members who cannot keep up with current demands. One central location 24/7 staffing with crew quarters. Keep everything in house and you can reward these volunteers who protected the community for so long with these new jobs. For those that haave careers keep them on as part time or per-diem employees to cover sick leave and vacations. I thought greenburgh trying to change their system, getting away from police officers running the buses and going to paid EMTs.

There's also the ANG boys out of Burlington flying F-16's. I know they were running patrols after 9-11 ripping down the Hudson f-ing up my cable twice a day. There were some pretty nice photos of them on patrol with Manhattan in the background. Here's one of them. The better one is from just infront of the fighter. Good view of the load and much closer to the ground. http://www.stevenplatt.com/wtcvtang.jpg

Westchester's problem isn't mutual aid. For the most part depts turn out as they're suppose to and in a timely manner for their neighbors. There are some issues with depts picking and choosing, but nothing severe enough to pose significant risk to civilians from what I've seen. The biggest issue with Westchester is the duplication of services and inefficiency of the current community based system. I think most of the bureaucracy and inefficiency are all a result of the restrictions the county has over what they can control. So much time and effort has to be dedicated to placating all the communities involved. I would love to see a centrally organized combination FD come to Westchester. I know its a pipe dream, but hopefully something will at the very least in the planning stage as more communities are forced to switch to paid EMS and EMS can remain municipal instead of being farmed out to the corporations.
