  1. It should be extremely low. The vast majority of shellfish allergies is a result of a protein in the muscle. Some have an allergic reaction to a protein contained in the shell but is much rarer and processing has been shown to denature the protein to a point where it no longer stimulates a reaction.
  2. Valid points monty, but streams don't put out fire, GPMs do. As long as you have a sufficient flow you will have enough of a reach to attack the seat of the fire. If you don't have enough reach you're either under pumping or on too small of a line.
  3. Relax gumby. We know there are good guys there. Its just a joke. Chris you forgot that you can't even get reverse unlocked till you've completed all those scenarios while backing up.
  4. OSHA finds the violations and Civil Litigation finds the real penalty.
  5. Roofsopen, many volley depts in Westchester have a death grip on combination nozzles. It makes 2 1/2 a much tougher line to handle and drives everyone to 1 3/4
  6. Starting in spring '08 and by the end of the year Verizon is going to open their network up to any phone compatible with their network. While this does exclude the i-phone and a few others most phones would be to be used on the Verizon network.
  7. London recently won a media award for their advertising campaign attempting to inform the public that there are some calls that deserve ambulances and others that deserve taxis. Onthewheel, you're preaching to the choir. I have yet to hear someone on this board suggest that the system is not broken. I know I have my efforts at educating people one by one but the people who are really in charge are so far from addressing this its almost funny. We can't even get tort reform that would prevent the growing decline of of certain medical specialties because of the crushing pressure of malpractice insurance. That is having a real time affect on people the issue of EMS system abuse is more abstaract and not even on the radar of politicians.
  8. You are absolutely right. Best insurer I ever dealt with was kaiser permanente. They were a California based non-profit that was chased out the east several years ago. At the same time I've never had a friend or relative have to leave this country so they can get necessary medical care nor have I ever met anyone who had to wait till they got home to be treated for an illness or injury. On 2 separate occasions I've had to leave Canada to get someone seen by a doctor. Once for a badly broken arm and the second time for a ruptured appendix. Now that is truly criminal. I have a good friend who is British and has traveled to the US and Holland for his cancer treatment so he didn't have to wait up to 6 months to begin treatment. I'll admit that just about everything I know is hearsay and obviously I'm never going to hear about the times the system worked, but in this country while they are going to break you stones mercilessly and run you through hurdle after hurdle there are ways to get what you need in a reasonable amount of time.
  9. How about this. Forget about whether or not a 21 y/o can be chief, but why is he the chief. The biggest knock against a 21 y/o chief is a lack of experience of one form or another. What about when that 21 y/o is the most experienced member? Why didn't anyone else with more experience in that dept step up and do the job. I'm sure there are 21 y/o's out there that could handle the job but the argument is whether or not they are best qualified for the job. Thats a question that cannot be answered until you can take a look inside that dept.
  10. This is another example of how socialized health care doesn't work and our profit based system is flawed but still better. English EMS systems are so over taxed that they regularly treat and release patients because the ERs are packed and there are not enough ambulances. When looking at adding units they look at the number of life threatening emergencies rather than the number of calls. Had your sister called because of a cut, tooth ache, sore throat, or something of similar life threat she would have been told for the get go that she doesn't need an ambulance. Yeah its great that it stops the nuisance runs but it doesn't do anything for the people need an ambulance but cannot get the appropriate information across to a dispatcher.
  11. No maaaannnnnn. Its a government conspiracy. He was planting evidence for our iran invasion maaaannnnnn. Its the same agency that killed Kennedy and burnt my toast this morning. . . maaaannnnn. You guys just have your head in the sand and are too afraid of the truth. . . maaannnn.
  12. ckroll...outside of winching the car off the tree and then flapping down the roof I'd have to go with a sawzall and try and cut the seat lose to try and slip out from under the door and the pedals to free his feet.
  13. In the brief lecture we received on Meth labs, the big concern was the emergence of vehicle based labs. Thanks to population density home based labs and labs hidden away in the woods are tough in the 5 boroughs making the trunk of a car much more attractive.
  14. For a weekend, its definitely worth it. Its been a few years since I was last up there, but I liked it much more than most Vt slopes.
  15. I hate these stories, they just help to show that statistics are only a good as the message you want to send. Manny of the jobs that require shift work are associated with increased exposure to hazardous environments and other known carcinogens. All of us shift workers for the most part live some horribly unhealthy lifestyles (White Castle, Burger King, McDonalds, Wendys, and Chinese is not a balanced diet). We're also all blue collar meaning we work more hours, have less access to health care, and generally do a poor job of taking care of ourselves compared to more affluent populations. Long story short, the increased cancer risk is correlational and not cause and effect.
  16. Isn't the officers gun going to be the first reflex when faced with a threat? I figure between its location on his hip or leg and training a cop is going to pull his gun as a reflex to a threat.
  17. Seriously, why are you having so much trouble with the dummy drag. Took the test a few years ago in Stamford and I can't think for the life of me why that would hold you up. Several groups of people who took the test have been trying to get the list thrown out, but they haven't had any success. As of right now this list is going through without further delays. The '99 and '02 tests are not being held up or having their validity challenged. The city is being investigated over the possibility of being sued for using discriminatory hiring practices. This type of suit would normally bring about a fine and changes in hiring practices.
  18. Any idea where someone can get a copy of the FDNY study? Everything I have read would suggest the Q has more penetration. The weakness of the q is usually around corners and perpendicular to the direction of travel.
  19. This is suppose to increase medicare payouts, so its not going to affect the fire district based or the agencies that do not bill.
  20. Hopefully this renovation is less flammable. Good luck Hartsdale.
  21. How about why is that building on fire? No power and no obvious external ignition source means you've quite possibly got someone inside.
  22. The state says you should wait, but it is up to the discretion of the person in charge of patient care. The biggest thing is ensuring there are no serious injuries and that the appropriate resources have been notified.
  23. I haven't read the report, it looks like sage all ready hit on the collapse, tech rescue, etc type calls. Often times there is not a specific mutual aid agreement nor is one necessary. The few collapse units available in the county are available to anyone who calls without specific agreements between depts. The training could be explained by areas that don't subscribe to NFPA training. I believe right here in NY our training was not equivalent to NFPA until recently. Doesn't mean its better or worse, it just didn't translate.
  24. There are two types of solar panel. Electric and fluid. In residential, I'm 99% sure you'd only see water but in larger commercial applications you could be looking at and oil based heat exchanger.
  25. Whelen all ready has a hands free voice activated system. Called five forward or something like that.
