  1. So that protection only applies to multiple patient incidents or can you hand off the FDGB (fall down go boom) w/ a broken wrist to BLS just so you don't unnecessarily strip the area of a medic?
  2. Antique, how does the inability to down triage patients to BLS affect a scenario where there are more patients than medics? MVA with two seriously injured patients both assessed by the medic and the second bus is just BLS. Are you sending them off to the ER and hoping it works out or are you protected if the "more stable" patient decides not to cooperate and crap out.
  3. FDNY EMS EMT first year 13.86 an hour with 1, 2, 3 and 5 year increases. After 5 years 20 an hour. Medic first year 19 an hour with 1, 2, 3 and 5 year increases. After 5 years 25.50 an hour. There is also meal money, 10% night differential, paid vacations, LODI, health insurance, prescription, dental, crap vision, 25 and out pension, and did I mention LODI. LODI is the single greatest difference between voluntary and FDNY units. How many EMTs and Medics do you know that haven't been seriously injured during a 10, 15 or 20+ year career? I don't know any. Calhobs, things have changed a lot and more change is on the way. Now that we are bargaining independently of he civilian employees of DC37 we have been making progress. DC37 still doesn't do much for us (hence the crap vision and pain in the a** dental) but the local has some really good guys in charge right now.
  4. The thread problems are with hydrant connections. No standardization nation wide there. BedfordFire, thats the fire I was thinking of.
  5. Is it so hard to use "the google"? http://www.google.com/search?client=firefo...G=Google+Search As for what to do to prepare check out these two links http://firefightersworkout.com/ http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0096.htm The first is Mike Stefano. He's got some excellent science based workout programs. He is also a big advocate of kettle bells which are far better for real world strength improvements than traditional weight lifting. The second link is a great article explaining why Mike and kettle bells are so much better than weight lifting. Its about running, but the science is solid. If nothing else, it should help you decide for yourself who you want to listen to when people are giving you advice.
  6. This is a common scenario in NYC. ALS nailed it off the bat. If you respond as a CFR you are a CFR under the direction of your officer. If you are a NYC remac certified Medic working BLS while waiting for your paramedic upgrade, you are an EMT. You are only as well trained as the title under which you are operating. Since you are only operating as a CFR there is no patient abandonment issue when care is handed off to the BLS. You get to know the guys working the CFR companies in your area and sometimes their outside training can be very useful. In these cases however they are operating outside their scope of training and the risks associated with that. There is also a whole procedure for accepting direction from a doctor or nurse on scene. Remember, you are practicing under your medical directors license. If this on scene doc wants to take over, then let them ahve at it. If they want you to operate then they need to let you do your thing. There is an option where the on scene doc can be responsible for your medical control options and discretionary decisions. If everything is kosher and telemetry is ok with it you are now operating under the on scene doc's license. sorry, 16fire5 I had missed your post before.
  7. I remember there being something cooking. It was definitely a commercial property and the chief at one point was asking dispatch to just send something.
  8. google maps. They let you drag your route to avoid roads or choose a specific route.
  9. Separate buildings same property. I get along great with the fire companies, but truth is EMS and fire in NYC are two different jobs with two different personalities. Even though we're suppose to be out on the road all tour we're in and out of our stations constantly and when things are good and the troops are happy we spend a lot of time in the station before and after our tours.

  11. Counties, towns, cities, anyone for that matter can operate a fire department. The issue becomes who is in charge. Home rule prevents the county from forcing a fire dept on any town, village, or city. The county can certainly start up a dept and make it available for any community. A fire protection district can choose to stop receiving service from a dept and either start their own or solicit a different dept for protection. A town can also choose to remove themselves from a fire district and open their own fire dept.
  12. So are these mechanics who become cops or cops who become mechanics?
  13. Live primary will almost drill its way into the ground. It'll cut its way down through pavement and earth right down to whatever lines are down there. Its really an interesting sight to see. Then after power is killed and you can fill the hole with water and watch it boil off. Its amazing how much energy is transfered into the surrounding earth.
  14. JBE, you nailed the biggest headache I had day in and day out. The communication between the three agencies sucks. Three times I've called in MVA's where I knew exactly where I was and if I hadn't had the number to dispatch they wouldn't have found me. Bronx River Pkwy northbound 300 ft south of Gunhill Rd, best access from Allerton Av becomes Broonx River southbound at Gunhill. PD's call takers are overwhelmed, EMS isn't fully staffed, and fire is stuck out in isolation. Thats insane that you guys can't do your own call backs and don't have real time access to PD or EMS job text. New multi million dollar operations center, special operations capabilities and redundancy out the arse, yet we can't talk to each other. In the mean time JBE I'm looking forward to passing your units on the spaghetti pile looking for phantom accidents.
  15. Thats scary stuff when the patient is still alive. Had a kid assaulted. Fully immobilized and we were taking him to the bus when this jackass Lt pulled the side of the stretcher and pulled it right into a pot hole. Luckily we caught him at about a 45 degree angle. The massive crowd surrounding us (Fordham Rd in the Bronx at 4pm in the summer) did a movie like collective gasp. If he'd hit the ground it would have been lights out for us.
  16. I think this goes a bit further than not crossing your t's and dotting your i's. The biggest no-no in live fire training was violated with the use of accelerants.
  17. Stop it. That argument has no substance. Fire is doing fine with volleys everywhere. If Volleys were such a problem then why isn't PD doing so much better than fire? Why are cities like Mt. Vernon with no volley support able to crap on their firefighters? You want change, you have to organize and then support your union. Until then, nothing any individual does matters because there is always someone else coming down the street ready to replace us. EMS is a new service. Fire and PD have been around for decades and have earned what they have today. No one is just going to hand over better wages and compensation because its the right thing. They must be forced into it.
  18. I think in the grand scheme of military spending these days, $440 Billion in 2007, they could have let her keep the helicopter. I'm not sure a $6 million bird would hurt the taxpayers too bad.

  20. What ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Think of it as a vaccine against the common cold. And if you happen to catch the herp from one of glasses thats why theres Valtrex.
  21. give the kid a break. He was right. The city has for far too long been neglecting the houses. They wait for them to fall apart, condemn them and then move the guys out. Rescue 3 is going to be squeezed in EMS Sta 18's parking lot. The vacant lot next door is in the process of being obtained to become a parking lot for the two facilities.
  22. Home Rule. It means that each municipality has the right to dictate what services it provides and how it provides them. The county can provide a service and offer communities the opportunity and incentives to join in, but thats about it.
  23. In Roofsopen's defense anyone who got onto the job in NYC before '96 signed on to a different job. Its the guys who joined the job after EMS became part of and b**** about it. For the guys on the job before EMS the job has changed and they have to do the job. In my experience the vast majority do just that their job. As long as the management does it right there is no reason why EMS and Fire cannot be combined. Both sides lose out when people have to choose, but you cannot relax the standards on either side just to accommodate the other.
  24. Great post Chris. Engine 29 did the right thing.
  25. Watch carefully, I'm betting its not a cell phone. The guy pulls something out of his pocket and his hand goes to the tank rather than to his head.
